Chapter 6 - I'm a Dead Man!

2016 Words
The sound of Alexa’s voice on the other end of the line filled Dante’s heart with a sense of newfound hope as Nicola immediately came over to stand beside him in obvious intrigue as to what was going on. “Wait, is that Alexa?” Nicola queried in disbelief from where he stood, understandably excited to hear what was going on. “Is she alright?” The last thing that Nicola knew about Alexa was that she had been kidnapped by Vincenzo. So how she was currently speaking to Dante over the phone right now was a sheer mystery to him! Nodding his head in a silent form of response to Nicola’s question, Dante continued the conversation he was now having with Alexa. “Bella, tell me you’re alright.” Dante pleaded, his expression mirroring the obvious desperation that he had, in needing to hear it coming from her own mouth in order to reassure him. “Did they hurt you in any way?” “No, no, I’m fine, really.” she replied dismissively. “But I do need your help. Lanzo’s been shot. He needs immediate medical attention Dante, please-” “-Wait, did you just say Lanzo?” Dante cut in, seemingly confused as to how one of his own men had ended up with her in the first place. In truth, Dante had a fairly good idea of how, but he still needed it to be confirmed before he started putting an active hit out on the poor man’s life. “Yeah, it’s a long story, believe me. Just wait until you hear it all…” Alexa spoke with an expressive sigh at the end of her sentence. “Shortened version, Lanzo helped me escape from Vincenzo’s men and now he-” Once again, Dante who was still utterly confused cut in over her. “-Wait, are you saying that Lanzo was with Vincenzo?” “Well yes… I mean, no. Ugh… it’s a tad hard to explain over the phone right now Dante.” Her tone of voice now sounded annoyed and somewhat out of breath. It almost sounded like she was in the middle of doing something whilst having the conversation with him and Dante wanted to know what it was that she was doing. Concern mixed with jealousy rose up from within him. Most importantly, Dante needed to know where Alexa was now. To retrieve her safely. He decided to come right out and ask her, after all, they didn’t have the time to mess around anymore. Not with Vincenzo and his men still out there and probably on the hunt for her as their conversation went on. “Alexa, listen to me. I need you to tell me where you are right now.” Dante commanded, suddenly becoming far more serious as he fell back into his infamous Reaper Mode. “Your exact location, do you understand? I’m going to come there in person and get you.” “Oh, thank God.... uh, we’re at a hotel in the city. It’s called Hotel Nirvana. According to their company’s business card, it’s on 37th Avenue, in Long Island. Do you know where that is?” Alexa read the address aloud directly from one of the in-room room service menus as she held it in her hand, and the phone held in the other. “I do.” he replied simply. “We’re staying in room two, four, six. It’s on the second floor, I think.” “Well done bella.” he spoke with a smile now. “Now, I need you to listen to me very carefully. I’m on my way to you now but until I get there you need to promise me something. You do not open your door to anyone who knocks, do you hear me? This is extremely important.” Nodding her head, Alexa spoke her reply almost instantaneously. “Ok, I won’t.” “That’s my girl…” he mused proudly. “I’m coming for you, amore mio. Just hang in there.” “Ti voglio bene, Dante.” (I love you, Dante.) Alexa spoke to him in fluent Italian, suddenly overcome with powerful emotions and unable to hold them in any longer. And also completely forgetting that she had not yet told Dante about her ability to understand and speak fluent Italian. One of her many hidden talents that would soon emerge. “Si prega di affrettarsi.” (Please hurry.) Seemingly stunned by her ability to suddenly speak so fluently to him in his own language, Dante found himself speechless for a moment, but it was long enough for her to end the call on him before he could say anything to her in reply. Including goodbye. ‘Click…’ Holding the phone out from his ear now, Dante stood briefly stunned by what he had just learned about his incredible woman. Not only had she somehow managed to escape from his enemy’s clutches unscathed, but Alexa was also able to understand and speak fluent Italian as well! His feeling of pride for her caused his heart to warm with happiness. She truly was perfect for him. Nicola’s voice shook him from his stunned state of mind, and he turned his attention back towards his close friend. “Well? Are you gonna tell me what she said? Is she alright? What’s happening?” Nicola queried one question after the next. “She’s alright, Nicola... she’s safe…” Dante gave his debrief to Nicola as he crossed the room towards his desk. “Somehow, she managed to escape from Moroni’s men and went on the run. Said she’s with Lanzo at Hotel Nirvana in Long Island. Room 246.” “Lanzo?” Nicola looked equally confused by this new piece of information. “How did Lanzo end up with her?” “No idea. But I’ll soon find out.” Dante replied sharply, collecting both his two guns and holstering them one by one before then pulling his suit jacket up and over his arms and shoulders. “I need to get to her right now, Nicola. I won’t lose her again.” Nodding in agreement, Nicola too gathered his things before the two exited the office and went to rally the others who would now accompany them on their newest mission. It was quite possible that Vincenzo and his men were already hot on Alexa’s trail, and Dante couldn’t risk his enemy finding Alexa before he did. He would ensure that he had enough men to put an end to Vincenzo once and for all, should it ever come to that. Once they had everyone gathered together, the crew disembarked from the warehouse headed back towards Long Island to locate and retrieve Alexa from the hotel she was hiding out in. And this time, Dante fully intended on getting to her first. - Locked safely in their hotel room, it had been over an hour now since she had called Dante and Alexa had already collected a variety of different things that they desperately needed from the hotel’s room service. Not only did she ask for medical supplies to mend Lanzo’s bullet wound while he cleaned himself off in the ensuite’s shower, but she also enquired into obtaining a clean pair of men’s clothing for him when he eventually came out. The hotel staff were more than happy to help Alexa out with this and the various items were quickly delivered to her room in no time. By now Alexa had managed to gather antiseptic, bandages and over the counter pain killers to assist with the pain that he was still experiencing. That and the clean clothing he would soon need. Hearing as the shower was turned off, Alexa knew that Lanzo would soon be coming out and had already prepared all of the medical equipment on a clean bench that she would need to use to dress his wound. The door to the bathroom creaked open slightly as Lanzo peeked his head out through the small open space. “Hey, uh… any luck with some new clothes?” he called out to her. “Oh, yeah… sorry.” Alexa replied shyly, blushing as she quickly grabbed the bundle of clothing and walked them over to the bathroom door where he stood patiently waiting with his nude body hidden behind the door. She held out the clothing for him to take as she spoke. “Here, I wasn’t sure about what you’d want so I just got something that looked pretty comfortable. Just, er… maybe keep the pants off for now…” Lanzo’s left brow lifted in amusement. But Alexa was quick to explain her meaning to him. “I mean, just so I can get to the wound… to dress it properly.” she spoke with obvious embarrassment, both her cheeks lighting up as red as roses. Reaching out his hand, Lanzo took the bundle from her and chuckled before he spoke his thanks. “It’s fine. Thanks for that.” Closing the door, Lanzo got to work dressing himself while Alexa poured them both a clean glass of cold water and got the pain medication for him. Moments later Lanzo appeared from the bathroom doorway, switching off the bathroom light and wearing only boxers as she had suggested. He carried the long pair of pants draped over his right arm as he padded his bare feet across the hotel room carpet to where Alexa had set up all of the medical equipment across the end of the bed. He too seemed embarrassed by their strange situation. “So, uh… how do I-” “-Oh, right. Hop on the bed and try make yourself comfortable.” she suggested, gesturing towards the bed with a nod of her head as she placed both glasses of water down on the bedside table. “I’ll do what I can with the wound for now…” She paused, watching as Lanzo grunted while getting up onto the mattress and then laying down on his back. “No worries.” he mused, trying to hide his obvious level of pain with a smile. Alexa came to stand beside the bed where he lay on his back, crouching down onto both her knees to get a better look at the through and through bullet wound. Gently peeling the face towel off, Alexa scanned the damage for a moment in silence, noticing that it appeared to look quite healthy for the time being. A neat through and through shot. And he wasn’t bleeding as much anymore, which meant that she had indeed missed his artery. “Looks like a clean shot. I guess you were right about this being the safest place to shoot you after all.” she announced, taking a piece of cloth and soaking it with Dettol before carefully cleaning the area around his wound with several soft strokes. “Like I said, I’ll do what I can now and the doctor can take a better look at it when we get back home.” Although he tried to hide it, Lanzo seemed to momentarily stiffen at the mention of returning to the mansion. And Alexa noticed, though she kept it to herself. As she continued to clean his wound, she thought it best to bring the subject up in a casual manner. “If you’re worried about how Dante will react when he finds you here, don’t stress.” she spoke to reassure him. “What do you mean when he finds me here?” he questioned with narrowed eyes. “You haven’t called him already, have you?” Lifting her gaze from her work, Alexa met his eyes and smiled. “Don’t worry, he’s already on his way now.” Surprising Alexa, Lanzo suddenly sat upright on the mattress, clearly in a state of panic as he leaned on his arm and looked around the room with concern. “What is it? What’s wrong?” she queried. He looked to her and spoke in all honesty. “I’m a dead man…”
