Chapter 2: Eyes on Him

891 Words
Lena Olajumoke adjusted the strap of her backpack as she stepped onto the campus courtyard. The morning sun reflected off the polished courts, making the basketball rims gleam like they were daring someone to take a shot. She could hear the echo of sneakers slapping the floor and the rhythmic bounce of basketballs, a sound that seemed to pulse through the university itself. Yesterday had been overwhelming, but today felt heavier. Her thoughts kept returning to the tall figure who seemed to dominate everything without trying. Kade Adewale. He moved like the world bent around him, and even just watching him had made her heart speed up in ways she could not explain. Students passed by, some whispering as they glanced at her. Lena caught snippets of conversations. "He is insane on the court," one boy said, and another girl added, "But have you seen the way he looks at people? Scary." She frowned, trying not to care. She had to survive this environment, and paying too much attention to someone who carried a reputation like Kade Adewale could only make things harder. Still, she could not stop the curiosity from creeping in, the need to understand why the entire campus seemed to revolve around him. She found Maya leaning against a column near the main basketball court, her usual calm, knowing smile present. "Good morning," Lena said, trying to sound casual. "Morning," Maya replied. Her eyes flicked toward the court, and Lena followed her gaze. Kade was already there, coaching a small group of players, his movements precise, almost harsh in their perfection. "He is insane," Lena said without thinking, echoing the words she had just overheard. Maya laughed softly. "Yes, but not the kind you think. People fear him because they do not understand him. And fear attracts attention. Just… watch, learn, but do not get too close too fast." Lena nodded, feeling a chill even in the warm morning air. She wanted to ask more, but she knew she would get answers in time. For now, observation was safest. Across the court, Kade caught her gaze. He did not smile, but there was something in his eyes that held hers just a second too long. Lena’s pulse jumped, and she quickly looked away, pretending to adjust her bag. "Why is everyone talking about him like that?" she asked Maya, leaning closer. "Rumors," Maya said simply. "But some are based on truths he never confirms. Others… well, people like to exaggerate. Just remember, everyone has a side you cannot see, and he has many." Lena frowned. She wanted clarity, but she also knew there were rules to this place she did not yet understand. Following Maya’s advice was probably the safest path for now. As the morning progressed, classes began. Lena found herself seated in a lecture hall, her notebook open but her mind wandering. She could not stop thinking about Kade. Even as her professor spoke about basketball physiology, her attention kept drifting to the way students whispered whenever his name came up, how some would glance nervously in his direction, and how he seemed untouchable. At lunch, Lena made her way to a quiet corner of the campus cafeteria. She was still digesting the morning, trying to piece together the puzzle that was Kade Adewale, when a group of students passed by, whispering just a little too loudly. "Did you hear about that incident last year?" one said. Lena caught the words but not the details. "Crazy stuff. Nobody touches him and gets away." Her stomach twisted. What incident? She wanted to ask, to dig, but the words died in her throat. She did not want to start her life at the university with a scandal she did not understand. Maya appeared beside her, sliding into the seat across from her. "Relax," she said. "You will learn soon enough. Just… do not let the fear or curiosity get the better of you." Lena nodded again, but her eyes wandered. Across the hall, Kade sat alone, a basketball resting against his leg, his eyes scanning the room in a way that seemed both absent and attentive. When their eyes met, even for the briefest moment, Lena felt the same pull she had yesterday. Something about him demanded attention, and she could not turn away. The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of lectures and observations. Lena took careful notes in her Sports Science class, learned how basketball management intertwined with physiology, and saw glimpses of Kade moving between classes with a confidence that made the entire campus seem smaller than it was. When the final bell rang, Lena gathered her things slowly. She wanted to watch, to see what he did after classes. Across the courtyard, Kade Adewale dribbled a ball alone, practicing shots with perfect form. His intensity made Lena’s chest ache with a mixture of awe and fear. Before she could look away, he paused, glanced in her direction, and smiled faintly, just enough that she could feel it, just enough that it sent a shiver down her spine. Lena swallowed hard. This was going to be more complicated than she had imagined. Curiosity, caution, and a sense of danger coiled tightly in her chest. She knew tomorrow would bring more encounters, more tension, and perhaps the beginning of something she could not control.
