In March, a journalist wrote a piece about the Hargrove name. Not about our marriage specifically, about the broader trajectory of Hargrove Industries, which under Damien’s stewardship had become something considerably different from what Robert had built, less leveraged and more sustainable, less reliant on the kind of aggressive capital arrangements that had created the 1997 documents. The piece was positive and thorough and contained a section about the public narrative around the Hargrove name, the shift from the controlled image of Robert’s era to the more visible and complicated truthfulness of Damien’s. It quoted The Choosing. It quoted the Sara Osei profile. It quoted the documentary. And it said something that I read twice, sitting at the kitchen table with Thomas in the car
