The Shift

780 Words
It was January 17th. Evelynn’s 18th birthday. Tonight, after she finished her work, she would be able to shift for the first time and speak to her wolf. She couldn’t wait. She got up at her 6am wake-up and made her way downstairs, saying good morning to the other servants on her way. The Alpha and Luna didn’t get up until 7:30am and since it was the weekend, Lucian didn’t get up until about 10am, so we had to keep his food hot. Everyone got to work on their jobs, Evelynn cooking food alongside another, elder woman who Evelynn liked. Half-way through, Evelynn heard the sound of someone walking down the stairs. She remembered about their guests and turned to see Lucian’s girlfriend, Ava, walking into the kitchen. She looked at us all and smirked, “You servants have no right to look at me without showing your respect! I am the future Luna of this pack.” Some of the servants cowered and bowed or curtsied to her out of fear but others, including Evelynn, just turned away to continue their work. The girl just walked over and took a piece of the food they were busy preparing and made her way back upstairs to Lucian’s room. She sighed in relief that the girl was gone and got back to work. At almost exactly 7:30am, the Alpha and Luna make their way into the kitchen together as their breakfast is plated and placed on the table at their designated chairs. Some time later, Ava’s parents made their ways into the kitchen and sat together at the table as they were served. Evelynn retreated to a corner as she waited for the four to be done with their food so she could wash up. Lucian and Ava didn’t come down for breakfast until 10am, like Lucian’s usual weekend wakeup time. Evelynn got their breakfasts, ignoring Ava’s scrutinising gaze, placing them on the table for them and walking over to the sink to begin cleaning some of the dishes. The couple were talking and laughing, Lucian having his arm around her and keeping her close as they ate. Evelynn supposed they were a cute couple, but Ava wasn’t her favourite by far. Lucian stood up some time later and gave Evelynn their plates. “Wash up. Don’t leave anything a mess,” He warns, eyes furrowed before turning back to Ava and leading her into the sitting room where their parents were. She cleaned up the dishes and made her way back up to her room and sat on her bed. The Alpha, Luna and Lucian didn’t care and probably didn’t even remember today was her 18th birthday, but that was fine. That night, after she completed all of her work, Evelynn stood at her open window on the 3rd floor of the large house. It was no longer storming. Ava and her parents had left an hour or so after Lucian and Ava ate breakfast. Now, she could finally go out and shift for the first time, talk to her wolf finally. Everyone was asleep and so she braced herself and climbed out of her window. There was a roof just below that she could climb up and down to get in and out of her room. Evelynn ran into the woods, to a clearing she had discovered many years ago and enjoys visiting to get away from everything. She stood by a tree in the clearing to gather her thoughts. Then, she stepped over to the middle and focused her mind on her wolf. Slowly, her body began to contort and shape itself into a large, light beast. She was small, and her fur was a silky ginger-brown, eyes beady and piercing, claws and fangs, long and sharp. “Hello, Evelynn,” Shared a soft, gentle voice. “My name is Vera.” Evelynn perked. This was her wolf! “It’s nice to meet you Vera,” She replied in her mind, tail wagging slightly in her excitement. “Let us go on a run, Evelynn,” Vera requested, hopeful to run with her human. She nodded, howling happily before starting off into a sprint, running through the forest, enjoying the freedom and company of her wolf. She arrived back home a couple hours later in her human form and climbed back up to her room. Exhaustion was strong after draining all of her energy running around the woods as her wolf. As soon as she got into her room and shutting the window, she flopped to the bed and passed out. She had no time before to acknowledge the pleasant, sweet scent that burned strong in her senses.
