CHAPTER SIX

I walked around aimlessly, still in shock. That was it, if I ever had any hopes of rebuilding my pack my hopes were all burnt to the ground. Literally. I came across some wild berries and plucked them gobbling them up greedily. It dawned on me it had been a few days since my last meal. And since I'd transformed too. I'd been in my human form all this time. Admittedly, the thought of being a rogue terrified me. The rabbit incident shook me to the core. What else was I capable of? Something told me much worse. I headed for the stream. If I was lucky enough maybe I would run into the she wolf again. She may or may not have some useful tricks to share. Oh well, it's not like I had something better to do or somewhere else to be. "I should te hunting again." I thought to myself after catching a glimpse of what could have been prey. I locked my lips hungrily contemplating on whether or not to chase after it. I shook my head trying to purge myself of those thoughts. But sooner or later I would need to learn how to hunt. I needed to learn how to control my wolf, and master my instincts. And no better time than now right? Without a second thought, I transformed into my wolf. Now that I was a part of the wild, I couldn't help but appreciate my little brown form. It really blended with the nature. I stealthily moved forward. I had to act smart, I was still unsure what it was I was hunting when the stench hit my nose. I quickly backed up. A skunk?! It was too late for me, the stink had already stuck to my fur. "Ew, Ew, Ew, this is so gross!" I thought to myself appalled. Without anything to wash off the stink it would take me days! maybe even WEEKS! I thought exasperated. This was just what I needed. I turned and headed for the stream. The only good thing I could think of was.... It would ward away animal attacks. Hey! That was actually a great thing. A worthy sacrifice for my safety as I trained to get stronger. I could already hear the water flowing. This time I arrived faster than I thought I would. I jumped into the water enjoying the feel of it sticking to my fur and splashing on my face. I got out felling refreshed and pure. Though the stench was still heavy. I shook myself dry transformed and went to relax against some tree. I looked up, it was already dusk, how time flies out here. I closed my eyes a bit reminiscing about the good old days. That image was immediately tarnished with the fateful attack. I opened my eyes with a resolve. "First let me work on my... Half transformations, if I can call it that." I said out loud sitting up straighter. I'd work on my claws first. How would I go about it? I wondered as I stared at my hand. I closed my eyes trying to focus. "Become one with your wolf, channel that energy into your hand," a voice sounded in my head. I didn't question it. I tried becoming one with the wolf but instead I could feel myself transforming. My joints twisted into place putting me on my wolf form. I growled irritated. Oh well, Rome wasn't built in a day. Since I was in this form it would do me good to go for a run. I could practice increasing my speed while I was at it. I enjoyed the feel of the wind blowing through my fur. When was the last time I went for a run just for fun. I wondered. But this wasn't fun it was practice I corrected myself quickly. I was running in between trees trying to master taking curves and still maintaining my speed. I kept st it for a while then decided to take a rest to catch my breath. Suddenly, I could feel someone's presence. I wasn't alone. I was immediately alert. It was already dark by now. This was predator time. Maybe I was in someone's territory, but no. This wasn't an animal's presence. I could feel the murderous intention heavy in the air. This was definitely a hunter. Fight or flight? I was still not strong enough to pick a fight. With a hunter especially. I knew next to nothing about them so it would be wise to flee, at least for now. But in which direction? That question was answered when I just barely managed to duck as an arrow zimned right over my head. I gave it a quick glance and from what I could see it was pure silver. That was fatal for me. I quickly dashed in the opposite direction from where the arrow came from but I could hear boots thudding right after me. How fast was this hunter? I thought frantically. I sped up zigzagging through trees, I couldn't hear the boots anymore. I faltered, I started to turn around when I suddenly heard something clicking. What was that now? I picked up my pace once again trying to scan around for somewhere I could hide. My stamina was already running out. I wouldn't be able to keep this pace much longer. An arrow flew past me and hit a tree, it whizzed past with some of my fur. My heart was pumping furiously by now. I spotted an overgrown bushfrom the corner of my eye. That would have to do for now. I spared a quick glance being and I couldn't see anyone or anything. But I could definitely pick up the sounds of those damn boots. I quickly dashed and jumped into the bush trying to be as quiet as possible even when the thorns were pricking me. It took some time but the boots definitely came closer, but they'd slowed down. "Where'd that damn creature go?" a males gruff voice sounded in a weird accent. I heard him spitting. I heard him walking around aimlessly. My heart was pounding frantically. If it were an animal, I would have definitely been dead meat. "I know you're hiding somewhere. Come out, come out, wherever you are." he continued in that weird accent his voice getting closer and closer to me. The seconds passed by painfully. Sooner or later he was bound to give up. Right? "Boo!" he suddenly said softly in a menacing voice his face right in front of mine. My heart practically stopped. The adrenaline pumping through my body, I lunged forward aggressively throwing him back. I grabbed his hand between my teeth and ripped it out. When he was still yelling in pain I turned and ran. I knew I'd just caught him by surprise. I couldn't allow myself to be there when he recovered from the surprise. True to it, it wasn't long when the yelling stopped. But by then they were distant cries. The chances of him catching up to me now were close to zero. Was my escape successful. I didn't know, and I wasn't stopping until I was completely sure I'd lost him.
