They walked side by side through the softly lit streets of Shanghai. The wind from the river carried a hint of salt and city smoke, mingling with the scent of lilies in her hand. Wei spoke carefully, sharing her love for the theater, the thrill of the performance, the pride she felt for her parents. Xu Zhe listened quietly, asking thoughtful, measured questions. He didn’t try to impress. He didn’t need to. His presence was steady, grounding, and she felt herself relaxing in a way that surprised her. “You have a way of making people feel… present,” he said finally, his voice low, almost reflective. “On stage, and… off it, I suppose.” Wei’s lips curved in a faint smile. “It’s the characters, really. They carry the truth I sometimes cannot.” They paused near the Bund, watching the lights ripple on the water. The city sparkled like scattered gems, but neither spoke immediately. The silence wasn’t awkward it was comfortable, layered with curiosity, respect, and the beginnings of something neither wanted to name yet. Then Xu Zhe checked his phone briefly. He typed something quickly and handed it to her, eyes still on the river. “Want to see the real Shanghai?” Wei read it slowly, a smile breaking across her elegant face. “I think… I’d like that very much.” For the first time in hours, maybe days, she felt entirely herself gentle, elegant, emotional, and fully alive and someone was seeing her. Not the actress. Not the character. Liang Wei. And across the quiet Shanghai night, an invisible thread began to stretch between them, unseen but unbreakable.
