“Now, Dr. Fisher. How many of these tiny pills would be necessary to cause the death of an aged person ?”
“It depends entirely on the person,” I replied. “Very small doses of digitalin have been known to cause death, and people have been known to recover from very large doses.”
“Then I’ll put it this way, Dr. Fisher. Would five of these tablets be sufficient to cause Miss Wyndham’s death?”
“I think so, undoubtedly,” I said.
“Thank you, Dr. Fisher.”
Mr. de Forrest Blaine rose.
“Dr. Fisher,” he said, “how large is the dose of digitalin in one of these pills?”
“One one-hundredth of a grain.”
“And you say that five of these tablets would kill a woman seventy-five years old?”
“I believe so. Unless she were very robust.”
“Would four one one-hundredth grain tablets kill her?”
