Chapter 6 – A Mother's Last Wish
Rain fell softly over Mumbai.
It was as though even the sky mourned.
Outside the small cemetery, family members and workers from the Singhania Mansion stood in silence.
Kumar stood beside Naina's grave, holding his two-day-old son carefully in his arms.
The baby slept peacefully.
Too young to know...
That he had already lost the person who loved him first.
The imam finished the final prayer.
One by one, everyone stepped forward to offer their condolences.
Mahesh placed a gentle hand on Kumar's shoulder.
"You are not alone."
Kumar lowered his eyes.
"I don't know how to raise him without her."
Mahesh looked at the sleeping baby.
"You won't have to do it alone."
"My home is your home."
"And your son..."
"He will always have a place in the Singhania family."
Kumar's eyes filled with tears.
"Thank you, Saab."
"You have already done more for us than anyone else."
Mahesh shook his head.
"I'm only doing what is right."
A few steps away...
Pooja stood quietly, wiping away tears.
Deepak held one side of her dupatta with his tiny hand.
He didn't understand why everyone looked so sad.
He only knew one thing.
"Naina aunty isn't coming back."
He looked up at his mother.
"Maa..."
"When Naina aunty wakes up..."
"Can Vishu play with me?"
Pooja's heart broke.
She knelt in front of him.
"Naina aunty has gone to Allah."
Deepak frowned.
"When will she come back?"
Pooja couldn't answer.
She simply hugged him tightly.
Nearby...
Little Aarohi sat in Vaani's lap.
She watched the people dressed in white with curious eyes.
"Maa..."
"Why is everyone crying?"
Vaani kissed her forehead.
"Because someone they love has gone to God."
Aarohi looked toward Kumar.
"He looks lonely."
Vaani nodded softly.
"He is."
Days passed.
The Singhania Mansion no longer felt as lively as before.
The kitchen, once filled with Naina's laughter, had become quiet.
Pooja worked alone now.
Sometimes...
Without thinking...
She would turn to ask Naina a question.
Only to remember...
She wasn't there anymore.
One afternoon, Pooja was preparing lunch when she heard a baby crying from the guest quarters.
She wiped her hands on her apron and hurried outside.
Inside Kumar's room...
Vishu cried loudly in his small cradle.
Kumar looked exhausted.
Dark circles had formed beneath his eyes.
He gently rocked the cradle.
"I'm trying, beta..."
"I really am."
"But I don't know why you won't stop crying."
Pooja smiled gently.
"May I?"
Kumar stepped aside.
The moment Pooja lifted Vishu into her arms...
The baby slowly became quiet.
His tiny fingers wrapped around the edge of her sari.
Within seconds...
He had fallen asleep.
Kumar stared in amazement.
"How did you do that?"
Pooja laughed softly.
"I don't know."
"Maybe he just wanted someone to hold him."
She looked down at the sleeping baby.
"So peaceful..."
Kumar smiled sadly.
"Naina was right."
"What do you mean?"
"Before she..."
His voice caught.
"She asked you to love him."
Pooja remembered the promise she had made.
She gently kissed Vishu's forehead.
"I'll keep my word."
"No matter what."
That evening...
Mahesh returned home from work carrying several bags.
He walked straight to Kumar's room.
"I bought some things."
He placed the bags on the table.
Baby clothes.
Blankets.
Milk bottles.
Toys.
Kumar looked overwhelmed.
"Saab..."
"You didn't have to."
Mahesh smiled.
"I know."
"I wanted to."
Vaani entered with Dhuraya.
She carried a tiny knitted sweater.
"I made this for Vishu."
Dhuraya smiled warmly.
"Come here, my little prince."
She gently carried the baby.
"So handsome."
"So much like his mother."
Kumar lowered his head.
"I wish she could see him."
The room fell silent.
Not everyone shared the same kindness.
From the hallway...
Sakshi watched the scene with folded arms.
She clicked her tongue.
"So much attention..."
"For a servant's child."
Raj heard her.
He sighed.
"Sakshi..."
"He's just a baby."
She shrugged.
"And?"
"He's not family."
Raj looked at her in disbelief.
"Does kindness require blood?"
Without waiting for an answer...
He walked away.
Sakshi remained where she was.
Her expression unreadable.
Late that night...
The mansion slept peacefully.
Only one room still had its light on.
Kumar sat beside Vishu's cradle.
The baby slept soundly.
Kumar picked up the framed photograph of Naina from the bedside table.
He smiled through tears.
"I don't know if I'm doing this right."
"But I promised you."
"I'll protect him."
"I'll love him enough..."
"For both of us."
A soft knock came at the door.
It was Pooja.
She held a small bowl of warm milk.
"I thought you might not have eaten."
Kumar smiled gratefully.
"You always think of everyone."
Pooja placed the bowl on the table.
Then she looked at the sleeping baby.
"You know..."
"I think Naina is at peace."
Kumar looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because she knows..."
"Her son will never be alone."
Kumar followed Pooja's gaze to Vishu.
The little boy slept peacefully...
Unaware that destiny had already begun writing a life filled with secrets.
A secret that no amount of time...
Could keep buried forever.
