Uncanny valley

Kieran's POV: He should’ve thrown the kid out the second he opened the door. Someone was in his room. Standing there like they owned the place. Like they weren’t intruding on the one space Kieran Thorneclaw had carved out for himself at this hellhole of a school. The scent hit him next—strange. Not wrong, exactly. Not bad. But it was almost as if it had altered somehow. Cleaned too thoroughly, like someone had doused themselves in cologne and prayed no one would notice. His wolf bristled. He crossed his arms, scowling. “You’ve got two seconds to explain what you’re doing in my room before I throw you out myself.” The stranger turned slowly. Calm. Measured. Arrogant. “I was assigned this room.” Kieran narrowed his eyes. That voice was rough, like someone trying too hard to sound dangerous. The kid looked about sixteen. Lanky. Sharp. Like a knife half-pulled from a sheath. “This is a single,” Kieran snapped. “My father arranged it months ago. No one’s supposed to be here but me.” “Maybe someone at the academy didn’t get the memo.” The nerve. He stepped forward. The kid didn’t move. Not even an inch. “You smell… weird,” Kieran muttered, sniffing again. There was something underneath all the masking. Something he couldn’t place. It itched at the back of his mind, just out of reach. "Whatever, it doesn't matter." The stranger smirked. “Let me guess. You want the bed.” “I’m not sleeping next to you.” “Perfect. I’m not offering.” Kieran’s jaw clenched. “Then get out.” “Make me.” It wasn’t yelled. Wasn’t aggressive. It was challenging. Kieran stared him down, waiting for the bluff to break. It didn’t. The kid’s silver eyes stayed locked on his, cool and defiant. Finally, Kieran gestured toward the empty space where a round large carpet lay on the polished marble floor. “Trial rules. One round. You win you get the bed, I win you leave my room.” But instead of stepping forward, the kid folded his arms and tilted his head. “Why would I do that?” he asked. Kieran blinked. “Because that’s how it works here.” “Sure,” the stranger said, casual as you please. “For people trying to prove something.” Kieran’s brow lowered. “What’s that supposed to mean?” “You’re Stormfang. Top of the food chain. You fight me and win, no one’s impressed. You fight me and lose—well, that’s a different story.” “I wouldn’t lose.” “Doesn’t matter.” The stranger shrugged. “The fact that you challenged me over a bed makes you look petty. Desperate to show off.” Kieran bristled. “You’re calling me desperate?” “I’m calling you predictable.” Kieran stepped forward, but the stranger beat him to it—leaning in just enough to speak without raising his voice. “I’m not here to fight you,” he said. “But I’m not leaving, either. So here’s your choice, Thorneclaw: kick me out, and you start your term looking like a spoiled heir who can’t share a room. Or keep me here, and you’ve got someone who knows how to stay quiet, blend in, and stay out of your way.” Kieran’s mouth twitched. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to hit this guy or shake his hand. He hated that it made sense. He hated more that his wolf still wouldn’t shut up—pacing, sniffing, circling something it couldn’t quite pin down. “Name,” he demanded. “Tam Black.” Another lie, probably. But delivered well. “From the... Mountain-pass pack?” Kieran said as he read the small letters on the emblem on collar of Tam's shirt. “Yeah.” He frowned. “Never heard of it.” “Most people haven’t.” Kieran hesitated. The right move was obvious: boot the guy, reclaim the room, put him in his place. But instead, he found himself saying: “It's a big enough bed. You stay on your side of the bed, and I'll stay on mine. And we will never speak of this to anyone. Is that understood?” “Understood.” “And if you touch my things—” “I wouldn’t dream of it,” Tam said, already moving toward the closet like it was a done deal. Kieran watched him unpack, every motion calm and practiced. Too calm. Something was off. Something was missing. But he couldn't put his finger on it. And that alone made this kid dangerous. ____________________________________________________________________ That night, Kieran didn’t sleep. He lay on his side, facing the wall, eyes open in the dark. Across the bed, he could hear Tam Black’s breathing—slow, even, controlled. Not the nervous kind of sleep a new student should have their first night at Lupincrest. Not even the angry, sulking kind. Just quiet. Like he belonged here. Kieran hated it. He’d faced down arrogant heirs, scheming council-borns, and more than a few bloodline fanatics trying to knock him down a peg. But this kid? This strange, scent-scrubbed, too-calm, late admit from a pack no one has ever heard of? He was a different kind of threat. Kieran’s fingers flexed around the edge of his blanket. His wolf was restless. Pacing still. Frustrated. Not scared. Not angry. Curious. And that was the problem. The moment he was out of the room the next morning, Kieran went straight to the Archives. The hallways of Lupincrest still smelled of incense and ambition. Fresh stone polish clung to the air, and the carved walls whispered with legacy. Five hundred years of bloodlines, traditions, victories. Power written in every rune. And none of it helped explain why his room had been reassigned without warning. He didn’t like surprises. Especially not ones that involved someone getting past the pull his father had locked down months ago. The Archives were buried deep beneath the West Wing—quiet, shadowed, guarded by more spells than the weapons vault. Kieran nodded to the enchantment ward at the door, letting it scan the Stormfang crest pinned to his collar. It opened without complaint. Inside, rows of glowing panels hovered over carved stone tables. Old-school paper scrolls shared space with flickering digital records and crystal-bound archives. The mix of ancient and cutting-edge was a Lupincrest signature—just like the ruthless way they tracked bloodlines and ranks. Taking a seat behind an archival tablet, Kieran's fingers flew over the screen. He logged into the academy’s internal pack registry. “Mountain-pass pack,” he muttered under his breath. The search returned a record, but barely. One entry. A pack tucked into the northeast cliffs near the Fenris Divide. Officially recognized. Technically legitimate. But weird. Remote. No major alliances. Minimal contact with the Northern Coalition. No recorded Trials in over ten years. He scanned the sparse file, frowning. Only a dozen active members. Mostly healers and herbalists. No Alpha challenges in a generation. Not the kind of pack that sent a teenage wolf to Lupincrest—especially not last-minute. He didn’t like mysteries. He especially didn’t like mysteries that smelled like lies. His fingers returned to the screen. This time, he opened the academy housing logs. It took a couple layers of permissions—layers he shouldn’t technically have, but that was why his father had people in admin. Stormfangs didn’t wait in lines. Room E-7. Originally logged as a single occupancy. Reserved three months ago. Approved and signed by Alpha Thorneclaw. But then, last week… a secondary entry. Room reassignment: Tam Black added. No pack seal. No sponsor listed. Just a signature he didn’t recognize—someone from the administrative rotation. A junior registrar. Sloppy. Too sloppy to be random. “Someone overrode the assignment,” he muttered. His wolf growled low in his chest, teeth bared. This wasn’t a coincidence. This wasn’t some clerical mix-up. Someone had put Tam in his room—deliberately. The question was why. His instincts were snapping together like puzzle pieces. The wrong scent. The hidden identity. The “nobody” from a pack no one had seen in years. A challenge sidestepped not from fear—but from calculation. Who was this kid? And who thought they could slide him into Kieran’s world without anyone noticing? He glanced once more toward the screen. Kieran narrowed his eyes. This wasn’t over. If someone was playing games, they picked the wrong wolf. Because Kieran Thorneclaw didn’t lose. And he never let someone else write the rules.
