*CHAPTER 2: THE BILLIONAIRE ALPHA'S OFFER*
---
The warmth of his hand around mine felt wrong.
It felt too safe.
Three hours ago I was rejected in front of my entire pack.
Now I was standing in the rain with Alpha Kade Blackwood. The Billionaire Alpha Pioneer.
The man every news channel called "ruthless."
He didn’t let go of my hand.
“Car,” he said, and a black Maybach rolled up instantly. A driver jumped out.
“Get in,” Kade ordered.
I shook my head. “I don’t know you.”
His jaw ticked. Rain dripped down his black suit. He looked furious. At me. At the rain. At the world.
“Miss, you have two choices,” he said, voice low and dangerous. “You can come with me, or you can stay here and freeze. Those are the only options I’m giving you tonight.”
I was shivering. My cheap dress was soaked.
And honestly? I had nowhere else to go.
So I got in.
The inside of the car smelled like leather and him. Expensive. Cold.
He sat beside me but didn’t touch me again. His eyes were on the window, gold flickering behind the ice-blue.
“You’re bleeding,” he said after 5 minutes of silence.
I looked down. My palms were cut from running through the forest.
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not.”
He pressed a button. “Drive to the penthouse. And call Dr. Hale.”
Ten minutes later we were in a building that touched the clouds.
Glass. Marble. Everything white and black and worth more than my whole pack.
The penthouse.
Dr. Hale, an old woman with kind eyes, cleaned my hands in silence. Kade stood by the window the whole time, back to me.
When she left, the room felt too big. Too quiet.
“Why did you help me?” I finally asked.
Kade turned. Slow.
His eyes dragged over me. Wet dress. Bare feet. Broken.
And then his wolf growled again. Inside my head.
_MINE._
“You smell like her,” he said.
My stomach dropped. “Her?”
“My mate.” The word came out like poison. “She died 10 years ago. Car accident. My wolf hasn’t spoken since.”
He stepped closer.
“But tonight, it spoke. For you.”
I took a step back. “I’m not your mate. My mate rejected me tonight. Alpha Damian.”
Kade’s expression went dark. Deadly.
“I know who Damian is. Weak. A child playing Alpha.”
He reached out and tucked a wet strand of hair behind my ear. His fingers were warm.
“I don’t care about fated bonds, Kira. I care about what’s mine. And my wolf chose you.”
My heart was racing. “You can’t just claim me. I’m nobody.”
“Wrong.” His voice dropped. “You’re standing in my penthouse. Wearing my shirt now. Eating my food. That makes you somebody. That makes you mine.”
He wasn’t asking.
He was telling me.
“Here’s the deal,” he said. “Stay with me for 3 months. Be seen with me. Let the city think you’re mine. In return, I’ll protect you. Give you money. Give you a name Damian can’t touch. After 3 months, if you still want to leave, I’ll let you go.”
“Why would you do that?”
“Because I’m tired of being alone.” For one second, the mask cracked. He looked tired. Old. “And because my wolf won’t shut up about you.”
3 months. Protection. Money.
Or go back to the streets.
“What if I say no?” I whispered.
Kade smiled. It wasn’t nice.
“Then I’ll still keep you. But we’ll do it the hard way.”
A threat. Wrapped in silk.
I should’ve run.
But the hole in my chest from Damian’s rejection was still bleeding.
And this Alpha, as cold as he was, was offering me warmth.
“Fine,” I said. “3 months.”
Kade’s eyes flashed. He looked... relieved?
“Good girl,” he murmured. “Dr. Hale will bring you clothes. You’ll stay in the east wing. My assistant will handle everything.”
He turned to leave, then stopped at the door.
“Oh, and Kira?”
“What?”
“Don’t think about running. I always find what’s mine.”
The door closed.
I was alone in a billionaire’s penthouse.
With a contract I didn’t sign.
And an Alpha who just claimed me without permission.
Outside, my phone buzzed. Unknown number.
I opened it.
*Damian:* `I made a mistake. Come home. We need to talk.`
I deleted it.
Let him regret it.
I had a new Alpha now.
And this one didn’t reject me.
