Chapter 13

MIRA’S POV I slammed the door of my bedroom shut, the sound from it echoing through the room. It felt good, but it did nothing to quiet the raging storm in my chest. I turned the key in the lock with a twist, my fingers trembling with fury. I paced up and down the room, my bare feet digging into the thick rugs. I was absolutely furious. Yes, I wanted to get strong. I had spent years in the Silver Crest pack being shoved into corners, cleaning grease from the kitchen stoves, and watching the warriors train from afar. I had always secretly craved the ability to defend myself, to hold a blade, and to look my bullies in the eye without flinching. But I wanted that strength on my own terms. I did not want to be forced into a brutal training regime by an arrogant, overbearing tyrant like Alpha King Asher. He had stood in that room and commanded my life as if I were a piece of stray livestock he bought at a market. I threw myself onto the edge of the massive king-sized bed, clutching a soft purple silk pillow against my stomach. The fabric felt cool against my flushed skin, but my core was boiling. I forced my ragged breathing to slow down, letting the sweet scent of lavender from the bathwater clear the heavy smell of Asher from my nose. I forced myself to think about the situation logically. If I had to learn how to fight, I suppose I couldn't ask for a better teacher. Asher was the strongest wolf in our entire realm. His speed was legendary, and his physical power was completely unmatched. If I could survive his brutal lessons, I would become lethal enough to protect myself from anyone. I wouldn't mind the physical exhaustion if it meant gaining actual power. But there was a massive catch that made my stomach turn completely inside out. I absolutely did not want to be his Luna. The idea of sitting on a throne and ruling next to that monster was completely horrifying. I was a wolfless omega. I did not care about pack titles, crowns, or leading a nation of werewolves, and in truth, Asher did not have to make me his Luna at all. Didn’t the border treaty simply state that Silver Crest had to provide a female to seal the alliance. It did not explicitly state that the female had to become the supreme queen of the royal territory. Asher could easily lock me away in a comfortable villa, declare me a royal ward, or make me a simple data clerk in the pack archives. He had the absolute power to do whatever he wanted with me. Yet, he was choosing to bind me to his pack link. He was choosing to train me personally so I could fight off the female challengers in his arena. He was actively keeping me in the running for the title of Luna Queen. There was something completely wrong with his decision. It did not make any logical sense. A ruthless king who valued absolute strength above all else should have discarded a defective, wolfless female the very second he discovered the truth. He should have locked me in a cellar or ignored my existence entirely. Why was he investing his personal time and energy into making me standard? "He is hiding something," I whispered into the quiet room, my eyes narrowing as I stared at the flames in the stone fireplace. "There is a hidden motive behind this, and I am going to figure it out." I stood up from the bed and walked over to the mirror. I looked at my reflection, my long silver-black hair was slightly messy, and my blue-violet eyes looked bright. I pulled the collar of my green linen dress down slightly, checking the skin behind my neck. The skin around it felt strange and warm, tingling with a faint energy from the sacred stone initiation. A sharp knock sounded on my door causing shivers to travel through my body. I froze, my muscles instantly locking tight. "Who is it?" I called out, my voice sharp and defensive. "It’s Chase, Mira," his warm voice replied from the hallway. "The King has ordered me to bring you your evening meal. Please open the door." I walked over slowly, turned key, and pulled the door open. Chase stood in the corridor, holding a large silver tray filled with roasted beef, thick brown gravy, and warm, steaming bread. He gave me a gentle, welcoming smile, but I could see a deep hint of exhaustion and anxiety lingering in his green eyes. "You look like you want to bite my head off," Chase noted dryly, stepping into the room and setting the heavy tray down on the small table near the fire. "I want to bite your king's head off," I corrected him, crossing my arms tightly over my chest as I followed him. "Why is he doing this, Chase? He hates weakness. He thinks I am a stain on his precious reputation. So why doesn't he just dump me in the servants' quarters and find himself a real wolf to be his queen?" Chase turned around slowly, his warm smile fading completely. He rubbed the back of his neck, his broad shoulders shifting under his gray tunic. "There are some things I cannot explain Mira. Asher is a complicated man, Mira. He is the king and definitely everything he does have a reason. I don’t know his reasoning behind this decision." "That's a lie," I said flatly, stepping closer to him. The savory scent of the hot beef filled the air, but I was too angry to care about food. "There is more to it. He looked completely horrified when he realized the pack link was dead inside my head. He didn't just look angry about the treaty; he looked shocked. What is he not telling me?" Chase opened his mouth to reply, but he stopped abruptly. “Greetings beta, the Alpha king has requested your presence,” An omega walked in. The relief on his face was very clear as he walked out of my room. I will get to the bottom of this.
