CHAPTER FIVE The Name That Stayed Wednesday. For the first time in years... Arielle woke up before her alarm. She stared at the ceiling for a moment before reaching for her phone. 6:03 A.M. Too early. Way too early. Yet somehow... She wasn't sleepy anymore. Downstairs, the familiar scent of coffee greeted her. "You're early." Celestine looked up from the kitchen island, pleasantly surprised. "I couldn't sleep." "Presentation today?" "No." "Exam?" She shook her head. "I just woke up." Her mother smiled knowingly but said nothing. Some questions didn't need answers. --- "Belle?" Cassian walked into the kitchen, still half asleep. "Why are you awake?" "I live here." "No." "I mean... why are you awake before me?" "Is that illegal?" "It feels wrong." Lucien looked up from his coffee. "She's becoming responsible." Cassian gasped dramatically. "We're losing her." Arielle laughed. "I'm literally just eating breakfast." --- By eight o'clock... The campus was brighter than usual. The rain from the previous night had washed everything clean. Leaves shimmered under the morning sun. Students gathered beneath the acacia trees while music drifted softly from someone's speaker. It felt peaceful. As Arielle walked toward the Architecture Building— "Good morning." She smiled before even turning around. "Good morning... Caelan." For a second... He looked surprised. "You remembered my name." "You remembered mine first." "...Fair enough." They both smiled. It was strange. Just two days ago... They were strangers. Now... Stopping to greet each other felt natural. --- "Heading to class?" "Yes." "You?" "Student Council meeting." "So you're busy." "A little." "Then I shouldn't keep you." He shook his head. "I still have five minutes." There was a comfortable silence between them. Not because they had nothing to say— But because neither of them felt pressured to fill it. "Can I ask you something?" "Of course." "Why Architecture?" Arielle looked toward the building ahead. "I've always loved creating spaces." She smiled softly. "My mom says a house becomes a home because of the people inside it." "So..." "I wanted to design places that people would someday call home." Caelan listened quietly. No interruptions. No unnecessary comments. Just listening. "And you?" She asked. "Why Business?" He chuckled. "Everyone assumes it's because of my family." "It isn't?" "It started that way." "And now?" "I realized..." He looked at the students passing by. "...I want to build something people can trust." She nodded. "I like that answer." "I'm glad." --- "Excuse me!" A little girl, no older than eight, stood in front of them holding a small paper bag. She wore a school uniform from the elementary building across campus. "Kuya..." She looked at Caelan. "...you dropped this." He frowned. "I don't think I—" The little girl opened the bag. Inside was a blueberry muffin. "Oh." He laughed. "That's yours." She blinked. "It is?" "I bought it for the outreach program later." The little girl looked disappointed. "Oh..." Caelan smiled. "You know what?" "You can have it." "Really?" He nodded. She grinned from ear to ear. "Thank you, Kuya!" Then she ran off happily. Arielle watched the whole exchange. "You were supposed to give that away later." "There are more." "You didn't have to." "I know." He shrugged lightly. "But she looked happier than I would've been." Arielle smiled. There it was again. Kindness. Not the kind people showed when others were watching. The quiet kind. The effortless kind. --- "Caelan!" Zev called from the Administration Building. "The meeting starts in two minutes!" "I'm coming." Caelan looked back at Arielle. "I should go." "You probably should." He smiled. "I'll see you around." "I'll see you around, too." He walked away. Arielle stood there for a moment before continuing toward her class. For reasons she couldn't explain... The campus felt a little warmer. --- Meanwhile... "What took you so long?" Zev asked as they entered the meeting room. "I was talking." "To the Architecture girl?" "...Yes." Zev smirked. "You know..." "What?" "You've smiled more this week than you did all last semester." Caelan paused. Had he? He didn't answer. Because for the first time... He wasn't sure himself. --- That afternoon... As Arielle packed her sketchbook into her bag, a folded sticky note slipped from between the pages. She frowned. She hadn't put one there. Curious, she unfolded it. The handwriting was neat. Don't forget to take breaks. Even architects need to rest. — A friend who still owes you better coffee. Arielle couldn't stop herself from smiling. Maybe... Some stories didn't begin with grand confessions. Maybe... They began with remembering someone's favorite coffee. Or leaving behind a simple note that made an ordinary day feel unforgettable. --- End of Chapter Five. 🤍
