Chapter 6:A promise of Protection

408 Words
The following morning, Aria tried to focus on her work, but Damien’s words echoed in her mind. Some secrets are better left buried. She couldn’t stop wondering what had happened to the man in the photograph or why Damien’s expression had changed so suddenly. Beneath his cold exterior was someone carrying painful memories, and for reasons she couldn’t explain, she wanted to understand him. As the workday ended, Aria left the Voss Enterprises building and began the short walk toward the bus stop. The streets were unusually quiet, and the evening air felt heavy. She reached into her bag for her phone when she noticed a black SUV parked across the road. Two unfamiliar men stepped out. “Miss Aria?” one of them called. She hesitated. “Yes?” “Our boss would like to speak with you.” “I don’t know your boss,” she replied, taking a step back. The men exchanged a glance before walking toward her. Fear rushed through her body. Every instinct told her to run. Just as one of them reached for her arm, the sound of screeching tires filled the street. A sleek black car stopped beside them. The rear door opened, and Damien stepped out. His calm expression disappeared the moment he saw the strangers surrounding Aria. “I suggest you leave,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. The men recognized him instantly. Without another word, they returned to their SUV and sped away. Damien turned to Aria. “Are you hurt?” She shook her head, still trembling. “I… I don’t understand. Who were they?” “They’re part of a world you should never have been dragged into.” “You knew this could happen, didn’t you?” she asked. Damien didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he removed his suit jacket and gently placed it over her shoulders. “From this moment on,” he said, “you will not go anywhere alone.” Aria looked at him in surprise. “You can’t control my life.” “I’m not trying to control it,” Damien replied. “I’m trying to keep you alive.” His words sent a chill through her. For the first time, Aria realized that meeting Damien Voss had placed her in real danger. And whether she liked it or not, the only person capable of protecting her was the man whose secrets were becoming more dangerous by the day.
