The masked intruder tightened his grip on the gun, his eyes fixed on Damien.
“You’ve caused my boss enough trouble,” he said. “Tonight, it ends.”
Damien slowly raised his hands, keeping himself between the gunman and Aria.
“If you came for me, let her go,” Damien said calmly.
The intruder laughed.
“She’s the reason we’re here.”
Aria’s heart pounded. She had never imagined that her life would become tangled in a war she didn’t understand.
Before the gunman could pull the trigger, the office door burst open.
“Mr. Voss!”
Damien’s security team rushed into the room.
The intruder fired a single shot toward the ceiling before diving back through the shattered window. By the time the guards reached the courtyard, he had disappeared into the darkness.
“Search the entire estate!” Damien ordered. “Seal every exit!”
“Yes, sir!”
The guards scattered in every direction.
Damien turned to Aria.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head, though her hands were trembling.
“No… thanks to you.”
Without thinking, she wrapped her arms around him.
For a brief moment, Damien stood completely still. He wasn’t used to comfort. For years, he had carried the burden of leading his family’s empire alone.
Slowly, he returned the embrace.
“You don’t have to be afraid,” he said quietly. “As long as I’m alive, no one will touch you.”
Aria looked up at him.
“You’re always protecting everyone else. But who protects you?”
The question caught Damien off guard.
No one had ever asked him that before.
He gave a faint smile, though sadness lingered in his eyes.
“I stopped expecting anyone to.”
Just then, Damien’s trusted adviser, Victor, entered the office carrying a small envelope.
“We found this outside the garden wall,” he said.
Damien opened it carefully.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed a much younger Damien standing beside his father at a grand estate.
Across the photograph, someone had written in red ink:
THE PAST ALWAYS RETURNS.
Damien’s face turned pale.
“What is it?” Aria asked.
He stared at the picture for a long moment before answering.
“This isn’t just a threat.”
He looked toward the dark window.
“It’s a message from someone I thought died years ago.”
A cold silence filled the room.
Whoever had returned knew Damien’s past.
And if they were truly alive, the war that had nearly destroyed the Voss family was about to begin again.
