Chapter Two: Echoes After Midnight

Ivy’s instincts told her to leave that bush immediately, and she obeyed. She ran as fast as she could, for her dear life. Minutes later, she arrived at the site where her car was parked.
“My Goodness, that was scary!” She panted, as she took a deep breath after every two seconds.
Without hesitation, she entered her car, slammed the door and drove off.
She felt a huge chill when she arrived at her compound. Atleast, she felt the peace of being at home with loved ones.
“Mummy” Gift excitedly said as she welcomed Ivy at the door.
“How are you my baby?” Ivy asked.
“I missed you mum,” Gift replied. “You’re home so late today. Did the bad guys stress you, mum?”
Ivy held Gift’s hand as they walked to take their seats, “Not that baby, mummy just had a lot of stuff to do at work. But I’m back now, and I missed you too.”
Ethan emerged from the bedroom looking so tired as though he had a very hectic day.
“Welcome love,” he said while hugging Ivy.
“Thank you sweetie. Are you okay?” Ivy asked, seeing how stressed he looks.
“Yes I… I’m fine. I just had a…” He stuttered while rubbing his forehead.
Gift intrudes, “mummy, uncle Ethan didn’t spend much time with me today. He left me alone most at times.”
“Oh no baby,” Ethan groaned as he carried her on his lap, “You were playing games and watching Barbie. I didn’t want to bother you a lot.”
“I need some rest. I am so tired. Let’s go to bed, it’s already 10pm.” Ivy yawned.
“Goodnight baby, make sure to wear your thick pullover, cap and socks so that you don’t feel cold.”
Gift kissed her mum and retired to bed.
Ivy and Ethan later left the living room to their bedroom. Ivy was freezing and seemed like she felt feverish. She had a rough day indeed.
“Are you okay?” Ethan asked
“Yeah, why?” Ivy boldly replied, flinging her handbag to the bed.
Ethan read through her emotions. “I can sense that something is not right, I just can’t wrap my head around it for now. Talk to me baby.”
Ivy sighed and sat on the bed, tied in her bathing towel.
“The case gets worse and harder to crack by the day” she muttered, wearing a sad face. “ I need to put in more effort, before the killings aggravate.”
Ethan places his arm over her shoulders, “I understand babe, but you need to be extremely cautious and careful. You know you have a high blood pressure, so please avoid stressing yourself too much.”
“I’ll try.” She bluntly said to Ethan. “All I want is to tackle this situation without compromising my family. Gift is my life.”
“Oh right… So how about me?” Ethan asked jealously and eagerly.
“You know I love you as well,” she said as she faced him, spreading her legs around his waist while sitting on his lap, and her hands on his shoulders and around his neck.
“Maybe I should show you how much I do, before I take my bath. What do you think?”
Without saying anything, Ethan carried Ivy from her butts and legs, undressed her and took her to the bed.
He caressed her tender breasts while sucking the other passionately. Then he licked her cleavage right down to her navel.
“Feels good?” Ethan lifted his head and asked.
Ivy immediately pushed his head back to her navel, “Just continue babe.
The night was fun till they heard a loud noise from Gift’s bedroom. Their good time was interrupted again.
“Did you hear that?” Ivy asked, terrified.
Ethan placed his hand on his forehead and eyes as though he was disappointed, “It’s probably Gift, let’s check up on her”
They wore their clothes and ran to find out what was going on.
Then they knocked at her door several times, but she didn’t open.
“Baby, are you alright?” Ivy asked with her heart pounding.
The scream they heard sounded like Gift’s, but nobody answered.
They stood at her door for some minutes to be sure that the noise probably came from outside, and they could go back to bed. They heard nothing, so they went back to their bedroom.
“Let me take my bath and rest” Ivy said as she removed the nightie she wore, and wrapped her towel round her chest and took her toothbrush to the bathroom.
“Come on babe, let’s finish what we started,” Ethan told her.
“I need to rest, I’ve had a long day. Besides, I have to go to work early tomorrow. Please understand me babe.”
When Ivy finished taking her bath and dressing up, she got on the bed to sleep and noticed that Ethan was still awake, chatting with someone over the phone.
“Who are you always talking to, at this time, babe? I’ve been watching you. If you’re not chatting then you’re out for a party” Ivy wondered as she asked, “Are you cheating on me?”
Ethan looked at her for ten seconds continuously, “I love you Ivy, and I don’t want you to ever see me that way.”
Ivy gives him the same stare. She kissed his lips and turned her back to sleep.
“Goodnight babe.” She said to Ethan.”
At around 2am that night, the whole place was calm and peaceful until a loud scream was heard again, still from Gift’s room. Ivy and Ethan jumped from the bed with terror, and ran to Gift’s room. This time, she was still screaming so loud.
“Baby open the door, please” Ivy requested, as she banged the door with her palms.
Ethan ran to get the spare keys of Gift’s door. Ivy stayed worried until Ethan found the keys and opened the door.
Gift wasn’t screaming anymore, she was panting and crying. Ivy and Ethan ran towards her and sat on her bed.
“What is wrong baby?” Ethan asked in curiosity.
Gift kept panicking, “I had a terrible dream about you, mummy.”
While still trying to get the details of the dream, Ivy’s phone buzzed in her hand. An anonymous number texted: “Curiosity kills the cat.”
