Chapter 4: “The Man Who Said He Would Help”

1436 Words
Tayla’s POV Grief doesn’t arrive all at once. It comes in waves. Sometimes it is loud—like when Damian was taken away, and the sound of handcuffs still echoed in my ears even hours later. Sometimes it is silent—like now, sitting in the living room with my son asleep beside me, staring at a front door that refused to bring my husband back. And sometimes… It feels like nothing at all. Just emptiness. A hollow space where your life used to be. Noah had fallen asleep on the couch, his small fingers still curled around my sleeve as if letting go even in sleep felt dangerous. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t think properly. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Damian. Not as a man being arrested. But as the man who kissed my forehead before walking into it. Like he already knew. Like he had already accepted his fate. My chest tightened painfully. “Damian…” I whispered into the silence. The name alone broke me again. The doorbell rang. I didn’t move. I didn’t even breathe. For a second, I thought I was imagining it. Then it rang again. Soft. Careful. Like whoever was outside already knew I was falling apart. I slowly stood up, wiping my face with shaking hands. Every step toward the door felt heavier than the last. When I opened it… Luca was standing there. Perfectly dressed. Calm. Controlled. As if nothing in the world had collapsed. “Luca…” my voice cracked instantly. The moment he saw me, his expression changed. Concern. Softness. Warmth. The exact kind of expression you would trust too quickly when you were drowning. “Tayla,” he said gently, stepping forward. “I came as soon as I heard.” I almost broke again at the sound of my name. Because Damian always said it like that. But Damian wasn’t here. I was alone. Completely alone. Luca’s eyes moved past me and landed on Noah asleep on the couch. Something flickered across his face. Gone too quickly to understand. “He’s asleep?” he asked softly. I nodded. “I couldn’t… I couldn’t keep him awake.” My voice broke on the last word. Luca stepped inside without waiting for permission. Not aggressively. Not forcefully. Just… naturally. Like he belonged there. Like he had always belonged there. “I should have been here earlier,” he said quietly. I shook my head immediately. “No… it’s not your fault.” The words came out automatically. Because I needed something to hold onto. Something normal. Something human. Luca looked at me for a long moment. Then he sighed softly. “Sit down, Tayla.” I hesitated. But my legs were shaking too badly to argue. I sat. He sat across from me. The silence between us was heavy, but not uncomfortable. Comforting. That was the dangerous part. Because comfort was exactly what I was starving for. “I spoke to someone at the station,” Luca said carefully. My head snapped up. “You did?” He nodded. “They won’t tell me much… but Damian is being held for now.” My chest tightened painfully. “For what?” I whispered. Luca hesitated. Just long enough for fear to creep in. Then he said softly: “Fraud-related charges… financial misconduct.” I stared at him. “No.” The word came out instantly. “No, that’s not him.” Luca’s expression softened. “I know how it sounds.” “You don’t understand,” I stood abruptly. “Damian would never—he works too hard, he—he built everything himself—he wouldn’t—” My voice broke. Luca stood too. “Tayla, look at me.” I didn’t want to. But I did. His eyes were steady. Calm. Reassuring. And for a second… I almost believed him. Almost. “I know Damian,” Luca said gently. “But sometimes people we love… hide things from us.” My breath caught. Something about the way he said it… felt like a warning wrapped in comfort. I shook my head. “No… no, you’re wrong.” But my voice wasn’t strong anymore. It was cracking. Luca stepped closer. Carefully. Like approaching something fragile. “You haven’t slept,” he said softly. I looked away. “I can’t.” “I know.” Silence. Then— “You shouldn’t be alone tonight.” My eyes snapped back to him. “What?” His expression didn’t change. “I’ll stay,” he said simply. “Just until you’re okay.” I should have refused. I should have told him to leave. But Noah stirred slightly on the couch, and panic immediately rose in my chest. And I realized something terrifying. I couldn’t do this alone. Not tonight. So I nodded. Barely. Luca didn’t smile. He just exhaled softly. “Good.” Later that night… The house felt less empty. And that scared me more than the emptiness itself. Luca had made tea. He had checked the locks. He had even brought a blanket for Noah without being asked. Everything he did looked… right. Normal. Safe. But every time I closed my eyes, I still saw Damian’s face before the arrest. That moment when he kissed my forehead. Like he knew something I didn’t. Luca sat across from me in silence. Watching me. Not in a way that felt invasive. In a way that felt… patient. “I keep thinking about his face,” I whispered suddenly. Luca didn’t interrupt. I continued. “When they took him… he didn’t even fight.” My throat tightened. “He just… accepted it.” Luca’s gaze darkened slightly. “Sometimes,” he said carefully, “that means guilt.” I shook my head immediately. “No.” Too fast. Too emotional. But I didn’t care. “I know him,” I insisted. “He’s not a criminal.” Silence. Then Luca spoke softly. “Or maybe,” he said, “you only know the part of him he let you see.” The words landed like a blade. My chest tightened. “That’s not fair.” “I’m not trying to hurt you,” he said gently. “I’m trying to prepare you.” “For what?” He hesitated. Just for a moment. Then— “For the possibility that Damian’s world isn’t as clean as you believed.” My hands trembled. I hated that he was making sense. I hated it more that I was listening. Because deep down… I was scared. Not of Damian. But of the fact that I didn’t know the truth anymore. A loud knock suddenly came from Noah’s room. I stood immediately. “Noah?” I rushed down the hall. Luca followed behind me. When I opened the door, Noah was sitting up in bed, rubbing his eyes. “Mommy?” “It’s okay, baby,” I rushed to him. “It’s okay.” He looked around the room. “Is Daddy still coming home?” My heart broke again. I didn’t know what to say. Before I could answer, Luca appeared behind me. He knelt down slightly. And smiled gently at Noah. “Hey buddy,” he said softly. Noah blinked at him. Luca continued. “Your dad is very strong. He just has to sort something out.” I looked at him sharply. But Noah seemed to relax slightly. “Really?” “Yes,” Luca said. “And he loves you a lot.” Noah nodded slowly. Then hugged his pillow. I watched Luca carefully. Something about the way he handled Noah… felt practiced. Effortless. Too perfect. But I pushed the thought away. Because I didn’t have space for suspicion right now. I had too much pain already. Later that night… After Noah fell asleep again… I stood alone in the hallway. Luca was preparing to leave. “I’ll come back tomorrow,” he said. I hesitated. Then nodded. “Thank you… for everything.” He studied me for a moment. Then gently said: “You don’t have to thank me, Tayla.” A pause. Then— “I just don’t want you to fall apart alone.” Something in his voice lingered. Too soft. Too personal. I didn’t notice it then. Not fully. Not the way I would later. Because all I could think about… was Damian. Locked somewhere I couldn’t reach. And a promise I no longer knew how to believe. Luca stepped out into the night. And as the door closed… the house felt empty again. But this time… It felt watched.
