The king’s fortress was called impenetrable, and the reputation was no exaggeration. Three days after my encounter with the nomads, I saw it for myself. Upon entering I passed through so many heavily guarded gates that I began to worry I would not be allowed out. After what felt like miles, I found myself in the throne room. An odd choice, for a fortress, but I had not known many kings before. Perhaps it was a requirement. Vach, my contact from the palace, greeted me and walked me in through the large doors, announcing my presence. King Caba sat in a high-backed chair, raised on a dais above me.
