It wasn't how things were supposed to go, it wasn't how she had planned for things to be. This wasn't the way, it just wasn't.
"Where did I go wrong, Vee?" Rey looked around to the horror surrounding her, there were dead bodies all over belonging to the same people she had sworn to protect but what crushed her most was the two half dead bodies lying next to each other. Halsey's and her father's, she didn't understand how she missed it, just like she was, they too were their main target.
"I don't think it was supposed to go this way."
Vee said to her and she was right because everything was just wrong.
She breathed deeply, she had sworn to not use her powers, she didn't want to. That's why when confronted by the human people earlier before she had used her wits and distracted them and then she'd escaped but that was not going to work, they were outnumbered she could see that.
"You need to do exactly what you need to do."
She locked eyes with Eyken who was further ahead trying his best to fight off the enemies.
"And if I am not careful enough?"
"I really don't think that should apply right now, look around you Rey, you need to make a choice."
"I know and am really sorry about earlier." She sighed.
"We will talk later."
"Okay." She agreed and then she looked around just like Eyken had asked her but then she saw him, the leader of the other state, pointing his g*n at her cousin, Renix didn't know because she was busy helping Haley and her mother but that was not the problem, Rey knew her cousin, Renix was good, she was actually so good when it came to fighting but, but she panicked fast when faced with immediate danger or things she couldn't resolve as fast as she wanted.
"You touch even a strand of her hair and you'll be as good as dead." She warned.
"Really!" He c****d his pistol.
"The last thing I remember is you playing us off with that thing you were talking to and then you run." He laughed and c****d it, then his men joined him, they had caused so much chaos and yet they didn't see it, they didn't want to, what they were causing was havoc, they were wrecking it in the worst way possible and in her and she wanted to tell them to stop.
"I cannot tell you much, you will have to figure out some of the events that will happen from now on your own, and what you will have to do to fix them, do not lose courage because you can do it. I believe in you, it's going to be so hard my dear granddaughter."
She stood up, walked over to her and held her shoulders a little bit tighter than she was supposed to, locking eyes with her.
"And then when it's all done, when everything will be down to ashes in the middle of all the chaos that's when you will remember this moment and the decision you make will affect our past and their future because all you will have then will be the present, that time when everything will befall you." She closed her eyes and opened them, placing a hand on Rey's chest.
"But your heart will guide you, do not at any chance allow yourself to be corrupted because that would awaken a darkness your late great grandmother cursed all who will rule with, please, please do not at any cost allow the darkness to take over you, your heart needs to remain pure for all of our sake..."
But then she stood still. It was like something in her clicked as she breathed heavily.
"You knew, you saw everything that would happen. Is this the choice I get to make, for Ren?" She mumbled quietly.
"If a conversation won't work to save her, to save the humans, isn't retaliation the only option I have?" She questioned again, her eyes fixed on her cousin, Renix could tell what was happening, what Rey was going to do.
At the cost of her own legacy, the life she would lead, the future that was already in motion Rey chose to let the darkness take control.
"Not her!"
She closed her left fist and fixed her eyes on the leader and then he choked out loud.
"The prophecy, it said you would be the link between the earthly ones and your own people. Queen Ulyss's adversery was right." Vee exclaimed.
"For Renix."
Rey mumbled, she wanted Vee to understand, she wanted her friend to know she was making a decision for the better good, that she was saving them all but at the price of her own written future.
"Maybe one day they will all understand why." Vee said and Rey, she breathed watching them, her eyes a pure mixture of anger, an anger that wanted to tear the people she had them on into pieces.
"Boss, are you okay?" A huge dark brown man turned to the leader but he couldn't speak, he only shook his head and his helper like always held his g*n at close range ready to defend him but in a split second Rey drained him of his own air until he had none to survive and then he fell dead as his friends stared at his body in horror they all took a step back totally afraid.
"If you want the same thing to happen to all your people go ahead, go right ahead and harm anyone else!" Rey shouted at the man as she slowly gave him back his air, they were staring at each other just a step away, close but but she could feel it, his heart as it beat fast, too fast, he was afraid, afraid of her.
"W-what did you do?" He stuttered.
What am I going to tell Uncle, my cousin, gosh!
"You know, I actually asked myself the same question." She held his shoulders.
"What was I going to tell my aunt if I let her daughter get hurt?" She wondered and then she stifled a laugh watching him stare at her in shock.
"Y-you...how?" He stuttered.
"I didn't." He shook his head.
"Because I can read your mind, I can hear your thoughts, I can feel every one of them." She said to him and the gasps she heard all over were enough, enough to let her know they all had the right to know who she was, that she was not part of their lives, never would she ever be.
"Who are you?" He stood still, finally getting a hold of the moment.
"Am Princess Arillia Rey Vasten from Octus Nova." She said boldly but she wasn't done yet.
"And I am not human, I am an alien!" She added.
"But…No, aliens aren't real." He shook his head.
"That's what you think." She laughed lightly.
She let out her fire with her right hand.
"Do you want to see if it's real?"
"No," He stepped back and she let it out.
"That's what I thought, so listen to me and keep in mind I won't repeat myself."
She wanted him to know what would happen, she wanted him to stop because he was the only one who could, the only one who had a complete say in what would come to pass because the other leader was already down.
"I need you to leave now, I need you to go back home when you are still in one piece but before that I need you to make me a promise."
"What?" He said defeated, there was not much to fight for anymore he could tell that too.
"You'll never cross the border ever!" Rey stated.
"If ever, it will be for peace's sake nothing else and I need you to put it down, for your generation to know that." She added.
"I-I." He mumbled but he looked around, all around with some of his people dead, some injured he knew as he saw his people nod in agreement that there was only one thing left to do, admit it was no longer worth it and so,
"I swear by the books that I shall keep the words you've said to me, for generations and generations to come." He said.
"But please let us leave in one piece."
"You have my word but know this, I am leaving but if you break the promise you've just made." She caught him by his collar.
"I'll be back and there won't be any mercy left in me to show you."
***********
"Am really sorry," Eli held Haley's hand as they watched one of the doctors from her mother's hospital try and see how severe her sister and her father had been injured.
"I wish there was something we could do." Haley said softly, she was trying to be strong, strong for her mother who knelt beside her father.
It was half an hour after the alteración with their neighbours, half an hour after they'd chosen to leave at Rey's order but then half an hour after two of the leaders were on the verge of death, two of the people Rey cared deeply for, people she'd sworn to help, to protect.
"There is something I can do," Renix offered walking to them.
"No," Rey shook her head, she was standing where Halsey lay.
"Rey," Renix called out to her.
"I said no!" Rey said firmly.
"Eyken talk to her." Renix glanced at Eyken who stood beside Ellen.
"Am sorry." He said softly, he would stick for her anytime but he understood why Rey was saying no.
"W-why won't you let her help us?" Halsey asked then she coughed and all eyes turned to her, she was the most injured and her eyes could tell you that she didn't have a lot of time.
"I'm really sorry," Rey apologised.
"Come on Rey," Renix tried once more.
"You've said no for me more times than I can ever count so right now it's my turn." Rey said softly.
"If she can heal my husband and my daughter," Mrs G. looked up to face her.
"Why won't you let her? It's the only request we have."
"It's not because it goes against our rules but because healing anyone who is not from Octus Nova can kill her. I don't want to know what they will do to her." Rey explained.
"But," There was concern in her voice as she stared between Halsey and her father, both of them struggling to breathe and she knew that if she gave in to her Cousin's wish that there was a choice to be made, a heartbreaking choice.
"The only problem there is, is that Renix can only heal one of you." She added and Mrs G face fell in anguish there was nothing she could do and when there was just one thing someone could, she had to choose, choose between saving her husband or her daughter.
"That surely is no problem, let her save Halsey." Mr G, said softly he wasn't badly injured but he wasn't doing well either.
"Dad no," Halsey shook her head.
"You have so much to do just promise you'll make your mama and I proud wherever we will be." He said to her,
"I already lost mom, I can't lose you too dad, you have to let them save you please." Halsey begged him, her biological mother had died just when she had turned five after a long battle with lung cancer and she didn't want to imagine a life without her other bio parent in it too, she loved her step mother, Haley's mom but she just couldn't.
"Do it Renix, save her." He turned to Renix and as she walked over to Halsey, Haley and her mother took turns saying their last words.
"He is dying," Vee whispered to Rey and as much as it didn't make sense, Vee was right, they could all see him turning pale.
"It's okay," Mrs G.said to him.
"You can let go." She added quietly.
"I love," He coughed, a wheezing cough, a painful one.
"You all so much." He added.
"Renix," Eyken gasped as he saw Renix blink hard.
"Just one more," She said, reaching deep into Halsey's last wound.
"You are all good," She said to her and she was but Renix wasn't.
"Ill be fine, but it will take some time." She said to everyone as she held onto Eyken's arm.
"Thank you," Halsey smiled at her as Eli helped her to where her father was.
"Mr G, I'll do something to help you pass off to the next life." Rey knelt beside him on his left side.
"W-what is it?" He stuttered.
"You won't feel the kind of pain you are in right now, it's what I'll take away from you." Rey said softly.
"That's only for the rite of passage when an alien is about to die, you all must mean a lot to Rey," Eli exclaimed.
"They do." She inhaled as she reached out for Mr G right hand once she had it, she closed her eyes then opened them slowly.
"Your life given for your own, but now in pain it departs. I take it all away letting you join the land of the souls in peace like none you've met before. To the goddess who gives life take this I offer to you I the reigning Princess of the Noverians."
"I can't feel it anymore, I-." Mr G tried to speak.
"Mr G you need to let Rey finish the ritual." But Eyken cut him off.
"Goddess of life I ask that for my sake you will protect the ones he leaves behind, his love poured out for them all in eternity shall they uphold." She stopped and cooled the air between them, she gave him his peace, letting him experience it as his children and his wife kissed him goodbye.
"He is all yours now." Rey forced a smile, a small smile because she had to, she'd been taught that as the souls departed you had to be happy that they'd crossed over.
Thank you Rey, let my people know Halsey will be as good as I am, Tell Eli to watch over my sweet Haley, let my wife know I loved her till the end, tell her to be there for our girls. And thank you for what you did for us.
Mr G didn't have any more strength in him to utter a single word but he'd known Rey could read his thoughts and so that's what she'd done.
**********
"Rey," Rey looked over on her right side to Eyken as they walked to where the ship was.
"Yeah,"
"You could have stayed for the funeral if you wanted to." He suggested.
"No," Rey shook her head.
"That was for them to do, I couldn't be involved any longer." She added.
"But at least you helped them all, told them what Mr G's last words were and you also talked to the people on behalf of Halsey." Renix, who walked on her left side exclaimed.
"That I did, I'll just… In a way, I'll miss this place." Rey revealed, she couldn't fool herself any longer because she indeed knew her heart would miss earth, it was a strange place and yet a place where she'd found herself, a place she'd made great friends, friends she had to leave behind but friends she would need to check on once in a while without their knowledge.
"But, I am going home now." She smiled fully.
"Yes we are," Vee chirped as she was still in her ear.
Except they were wrong all of them because like nothing had happened something happened, time stood still in a second and then.
************
They both walked through the golden pavement that led to the Royal garden, hand in hand each feeling the softens of the other's.
"The Princess and her betrothed," They heard someone gasp from up front and when they looked at him he was all dressed up and had a helmet on him, he was a royal guard.
"They are back, I need to alert the Palace he bent in respect a'd then took off.
"Finally," Rey smiled as she let go of his hand.
"Be careful, your tone can betray you." Eyken smiled mischievously.
"We've come so far, I won't let that happen until we get everything we want." She clarified.
"And the cousin?" He asked.
"We'll just say she chose to stay back for a while." She answered him and for a moment or so they stayed intact and then they both took in deep breaths and continued on to the Palace.
*****************
"What just happened?" Renix scratched her head.
"And whoa, where are we?" She asked in time for the three of them to look around, they were at a deserted place.
"Eyken, did you time travel us again?" Rey turned to Eyken.
"No, no I didn't." He shook his head.
"Then what?" Shock written all over her face Rey asked the only question she could, they were no longer on earth , everything around was proof enough and Eyken hadn't teleported them nor had they gotten into the ship which all meant something had gone terribly wrong more so they were not close to home, yet.
"It's not earth, my readings say that we are at a place that exists within time and…" Vee stopped.
"And what Vee?" Renix asked, confused.
"We are surrounded and Rey, your heart is stopping."
Just as Vee said that Rey fell on her knees as Eyken and Renix turned to her they saw it, the blood dripping all over her clothes, Eyken in a split second he hurriedly opened her black jacket and took it off and there it was, you could see it perfectly well, the small hole from her t-shirt, it pierced right through her chest.
"S-she shot me, that arrow I couldn't see, it was her. She wanted me dead." Rey stuttered finally realising what her close contact with her double meant, what it was supposed to do, what it had done.
"I'll kill her I swear!" Renix roared in anger.
"Me too cousin, me too," Rey said softly, she was struggling to speak.
"But why would she do this to you?" Eyken wondered, they had all initially thought Rey's double was there to help them but no.
"Because of Octus Nova." They all heard Vee say, there were no questions asked, her statement was well received, it didn't need any further explanations.
"I think I… I don't know, I…but I should…nhhh-" Rey stammered as her body slowly gave in to Eyken's arms.
"I felt like this once and then when I woke up I was on another planet." She managed to say.
"There they are, finally we've found them!" There was a hoarse voice of a male that echoed all over and as it did they all looked and Vee was indeed right, they were surrounded.
"Not again!" Eyken tried to stand up but Rey stopped him.
"Why?" He wondered.
"Something was off from the start, it was never never meant to be this way." Vee said quietly.
"I know," Rey sighed.
"Ren let Veah know you wouldn't be left behind, let her know she should never leave mom or Aunt's side until we show up." She added.
"What do you mean?" Renix asked her cousin.
"Am not strong enough to explain everything but do that now." Rey explained and as Renix tapped on her communications device Rey closed her eyes for a brief moment.
"We need to move!" Eyken said.
"No, whatever happens, don't time travel us!" Rey said to him.
"What?" Eyken stared at her in shock.
"Don't do it, it's not over yet." Rey stated.
"Your eyes are changing." Renix pointed out.
"I can feel it. Don't time travel us until I wake up t-that's all I am saying t-to you." She mumbled but loud enough for them to hear.
"Move, get them, they need to pay for their crimes!" That sound echoed again but it was now closer than it had been.
"Fugitives we are then, here we go." Renix breathed and held Rey's left hand, Eyken had the other one.
"Yeah, here we go. I love you two but you'll need to wait." And that's all she said and her wound closed itself as did her eyes, her body no longer moving, her heart no longer beating. She was long gone, dead for the second time and as Eyken and Renix's eyes fell on her body they heard the matching boots walking towards them with nothing left to do they both sighed deeply and gazed into each others eyes ready for whatever would happen next because they willingly had to, for Rey, until she could come back to them, until her heart choose to beat again.
THE END…OR NOT!
Reys's Heart Book 2
CHAPTER 1 sneak peek
"This is the only chance I am giving you two, one more day and if she still won't come back to life, then we will burn her body to ashes, that's what she deserves." The same voice, the same man who was still holding them captive said in anger.
"I cannot let you all leave." He added as he locked the cell his men had thrown them into.
"This is not who you think it is," Renix stood up, she had literally said that same statement for over ten times.
"She is." The man snorted, picking his keys to leave.
"Okay," Renix shrugged as she briefly stared at Eyken on the floor, he still had Rey in his arms.
"Just until the week is over, that's all I'll ask if she comes back to life, then you can make your judgement then." She stated, that's all she could do, say because she knew that her cousin couldn't stay on the other side that long.
"Just until the end of the week." He agreed and then took off.
"If she doesn't wake up by then?" Eyken asked her as she sat down, whether she could or not because she had been dead for over seventy two hours. That's what they knew and compared to the previous time that's the longest she had gone, the longest anyone they knew had gone for.
"I really don't know," Renix's shoulders fell.
"But she needs to wake up, she has to." She leaned on the wall of their small cell unable to do anything else she let them fall, the tears she had been holding inside for so long, she knew by heart what it meant to keep a word promised but Rey's was becoming a long short and worse they didn't have a solution……….
