CHAPTER TWO: UNRAVELING TIME The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the courtyard. Stella and Knox sat side by side on a weathered bench, the day's events weighing heavily on both of them. The evening air was cool, a welcome respite from the day's heat, but neither of them noticed. Their minds were far from the tranquil surroundings. "Okay," Knox said finally, breaking the silence. "Let's say I believe you. How exactly do you plan to save me?" Stella took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. "I don’t have all the answers yet, but I know a few things. In my time, you're a huge star. You released your first big hit just after high school and your career took off from there. But, fourteen years later, you... you died in a car accident." Knox's face was a mix of disbelief and intrigue. "A car accident? How do you know this?" "It was all over the news," Stella replied, her voice soft. "I saw the reports, read the articles. I remember every detail. You were driving home late at night after a concert, and there was a crash. They said you lost control of the car." Knox looked down, processing her words. "And you think you can stop it from happening?" "I have to try," Stella said, her voice firm. "You have so much to live for, so much left to do. I can't just sit back and let it happen." Knox nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. "Alright. Let's assume you're right. What do we do now?" Stella felt a surge of determination. "First, we need to figure out what might have caused the crash. Were you tired? Distracted? We need to identify the factors and eliminate them. And beyond that, we need to be cautious. Any small change in the present could have a big impact on the future." Knox leaned back, running a hand through his hair. "This is a lot to take in. But if there's even a chance you're telling the truth, I'm willing to try." A small smile tugged at Stella's lips. "Thank you, Knox. I know it's hard to believe, but we'll figure this out together." --- The next morning, Stella found herself once again navigating the familiar halls of North Ridge High School. The mundane routine of classes and homework felt surreal after her conversation with Knox. She had to balance her normal life with her mission, and it wasn’t going to be easy. During lunch, Mia cornered her in the cafeteria. "Alright, spill. What's going on with you? You've been acting weird since yesterday." Stella sighed, trying to come up with a plausible explanation. "I’ve just got a lot on my mind, Mia. Family stuff." Mia's eyes softened with concern. "Do you want to talk about it?" "Not right now," Stella replied, grateful for her friend's support. "But thanks for asking. I promise I'll be fine." Mia gave her a reassuring hug. "Okay, but if you need anything, you know I'm here for you." The rest of the day passed in a blur. Stella's thoughts kept drifting back to Knox and their conversation. She needed to see him again, to discuss their next steps. As the final bell rang, she made her way to Eastwood High once more. Knox was waiting for her outside the music room, a pensive look on his face. "Hey," he greeted her, his voice subdued. "Hey," Stella replied, offering a small smile. "Have you thought about what we talked about?" Knox nodded. "Yeah, I've been thinking about it all day. If we want to prevent the crash, we need to figure out exactly what happened. And for that, we need more information." Stella agreed. "I remember some details from the news reports, but it wasn't enough. We need to dig deeper. Maybe we can find more information online or in the archives." Knox looked thoughtful. "There's a library in town with a pretty extensive archive. We can start there." They made their way to the town library, a stately old building that had stood for generations. The librarian, an elderly woman with kind eyes, greeted them warmly. "How can I help you today?" "We're looking for old newspaper articles," Stella explained. "Specifically, anything about a car accident involving a musician named Knox David." The librarian's expression turned sympathetic. "That's a sad story. Follow me, dears." She led them to a section of the library filled with rows of microfilm and old newspapers. "You might find what you're looking for here. Just let me know if you need any help." Stella and Knox thanked her and began their search. Hours passed as they sifted through articles, their eyes scanning lines of text for any clue. Finally, Stella found it—a detailed report on the accident. "Here it is," she said, her voice tinged with excitement. "Knox David, aged 32, was involved in a fatal car accident late at night on the freeway. Preliminary investigations suggest he lost control of the vehicle, possibly due to fatigue and adverse weather conditions." Knox leaned over, reading the article with her. "Fatigue and weather conditions... That's something we can work with." "Yes," Stella agreed. "We need to make sure you're well-rested and avoid driving in bad weather. But there’s something else… You were coming back from a concert. That means we need to look at your schedule, your stress levels. Anything that could contribute to the accident." Knox nodded, determination in his eyes. "Okay, let's do this. But we need to be careful. If anyone finds out what we're doing, they might think we're crazy." Stella smiled. "We’ll keep it between us. For now, let's focus on what we can control." --- In the following weeks, Stella and Knox worked together, carefully planning each step. They monitored Knox's schedule, ensuring he got enough rest and avoided risky situations. Stella attended as many of Knox's rehearsals and performances as she could, keeping a close eye on him. Their efforts began to pay off. Knox seemed more relaxed, more in control. His performances were as mesmerizing as ever, but there was a new layer of caution in his actions. Stella couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they could change the future. One evening, after a particularly successful rehearsal, Knox and Stella sat in the school's music room, the soft glow of the setting sun casting a warm light over them. "You know," Knox said, his voice thoughtful, "I never would have believed any of this if it weren’t for you. You've given me a chance to change my fate." Stella smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. "And you've given me a chance to repay you for all the times your music saved me. We're in this together, Knox." He looked at her, a rare vulnerability in his eyes. "I don't know how to thank you, Stella." "You don't have to," she replied softly. "Just stay safe. That's all I need." As they sat there, the bond between them growing stronger, Stella felt a sense of purpose she had never known before. She was determined to protect Knox, to change the future. And in the process, she was discovering a strength within herself that she never knew existed. --- Despite their best efforts, not everything went smoothly. There were setbacks and moments of doubt. Knox's demanding schedule took its toll, and there were days when the weight of their mission seemed almost too much to bear. One rainy afternoon, as they sat in a coffee shop discussing their next steps, Knox looked at Stella, worry etched on his face. "What if we can't change it? What if it's all meant to happen this way?" Stella reached across the table, taking his hand in hers. "We can't think like that. We've already made changes, Knox. We've altered your schedule, made you more aware. Every little change matters." He nodded, but the uncertainty remained. "It's just... sometimes it feels like we're fighting an impossible battle." "Maybe we are," Stella admitted. "But that doesn't mean we give up. We keep fighting, no matter what." Knox squeezed her hand, drawing strength from her determination. "You're right. We keep fighting." As they left the coffee shop, the rain pouring down around them, Stella felt a renewed sense of resolve. The road ahead was uncertain, and the stakes were high, but she knew one thing for sure: she wouldn't stop fighting for Knox. Not until she had done everything in her power to save him. With each passing day, their bond grew stronger, and the future became a little less certain. But for Stella, that uncertainty was a beacon of hope. It meant that the future could be changed, that Knox could be saved. And she would do whatever it took to make sure that happened.
