Chapter 19 - Elora's POV (Part 1)

2206 Words
Sitting in the car with Talon, Falon, and Calin felt like a punishment. Elora stared out the window, watching the familiar landscape fade as they headed out of the pack's territory. The car ride was silent, tense, and heavy with unspoken words. Every so often, she could feel one of them looking her way, but she didn’t turn to meet their eyes. She wasn't here to be friends, to rekindle any semblance of the past they shared, or to ease their guilty consciences. She was here out of obligation and, perhaps, a sliver of curiosity, despite her better judgment. The only reason she was even sitting there was because of a conversation that she had shaken her to her core two days ago. Two weeks had passed since the Gala, a night that now seemed like an unsettling dream. She’d been called to the pack house by Alpha Gavin once again. Unfortunately, having been summoned before did not make the second summoning any easier. She suspected he was about to get mad at her for causing a scene at the beautiful gala he had held in her honor. As she stood outside his office door, she took a deep breath before knocking. “Come in!” The Alpha called to her and she shakily opened the door. When she stepped into his office, Alpha Gavin greeted her with a solemn expression. "Elora," he began, his voice softer than she’d expected, "I wanted to speak to you privately about my sons. About everything they’ve put you through." Her heart had leaped up her throat at his words, but, the eased as she realized she was not in trouble. "Sir, you don’t have to apologize on their behalf," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. The last thing she wanted was to relive her history with the triplets, even through the Alpha's regrets. "But I do." Alpha Gavin’s eyes met hers, and she could see the genuine remorse etched there. "They were wrong, Elora. And I was wrong for not seeing it sooner. Talon, Falon, and Calin... They want to make it right. I believe them, despite their MASSIVE mistakes." Elora had struggled to find a response, caught off guard. “Okay? Thank you?” she murmured. She chastised herself for being such an awkward person. But the Alpha shook his head. “Don’t thank me just yet,” he said, his expression shifting as if preparing her for what came next. “This isn’t just about words or apologies. My sons are going to a ceremony soon—a friend of theirs from college is stepping up as Alpha of his pack. They’ll be there to support him, but they’ll also be arranging an alliance on behalf of our pack. I want you to accompany them.” Her mind reeled. Accompany them? The very thought of spending days with the triplets, surrounded by their friends, was unsettling. She opened her mouth to protest, but the Alpha held up his hand. “I understand this isn’t something you want,” he continued gently, “but I believe this is a step they need to take—to prove that their intentions to make amends aren’t just empty words. And I wouldn’t ask this of you lightly.” He paused, studying her face. “If they cause you any trouble, any at all, I’ll personally see to it that your medical school loans are covered. You won’t owe a penny.” It was an offer that tempted her, not for the financial relief but for the confidence Alpha Gavin seemed to have in his sons. His seriousness made her reconsider her initial impulse to decline. She drew in a steadying breath, then met his gaze. “I’ll go,” she finally said. “But I don’t need you to pay off my loans if something goes wrong. I'm agreeing because I do think people should be given second chances.” She immediately regretted her decision, and yet, some part of her was curious to see if the triplets could be different from the boys she’d known. Elora’s mind then drifted back to the conversation she'd had with Talia and Ryder the day before. Breaking the news to them had been harder than she'd anticipated. The thought of traveling with the triplets wasn’t exactly a thrilling prospect for her, either, but Talia’s reaction had been unexpectedly encouraging. Talia had waved away her concerns with a bright smile and a dismissive hand gesture. “Elora, are you kidding? This is an opportunity!” she’d said with that infectious, determined sparkle in her eyes. “Think of it like a mini-vacation. You deserve it. Besides, what’s the worst that could happen? You’ll be away from the pack, away from all the judgment and whispers. Just a few days to clear your head. Plus, you’ll have the triplets carrying your luggage,” she added with a wink. Despite herself, Elora had laughed. “I’m not sure that they’ll be that helpful, but I appreciate the optimism.” Talia had insisted on helping her pack, throwing in outfits she claimed Elora "might need" but felt out of her comfort zone wearing. Brightly colored dresses, sleek skirts, and even a pair of heels she never would have packed on her own made their way into her suitcase. Talia had chosen each piece with meticulous attention, determined that Elora would look her best for the ceremony. “Look,” Talia had said, holding up a shimmery, deep green dress. “This one will be perfect for the ceremony. You’ll knock them all out.” Elora had merely shaken her head, appreciating Talia’s enthusiasm but not entirely convinced she’d need such glamorous attire. She wasn’t going to impress anyone; she was going to support Alpha Gavin and try to make the best of a difficult situation. Then, there was Ryder. His reaction had been...complicated. Unlike Talia, who saw the trip as an adventure, Ryder was less than thrilled. Jealousy simmered beneath his words when he’d found out she’d be alone with the triplets for days. “You’re really going?” he’d asked, a faint edge to his tone. His usual relaxed demeanor was nowhere to be found. “With them?” “Ryder, it’s not like I have a choice. Alpha Gavin asked me to go, and he was...pretty insistent,” she’d explained, feeling the sting of his disappointment. He’d stepped closer, his hand reaching out to brush her cheek. “You don’t have to go, though. You could stay here, and we could spend the weekend together. Get away from everything, just the two of us.” The offer was tempting. Spending a carefree weekend with Ryder, away from the pack and its dramas, sounded like a dream. She liked him, and felt comfortable around him in a way she hadn’t with anyone else in a long time. And yet, something was holding her back. A hesitation, deep and unexplainable, that made her hesitate. “I...can’t,” she’d finally said, almost apologetically. “I have to do this, Ryder.” He’d let his hand drop, and the spark of jealousy in his eyes softened into something sadder, almost resigned. “I get it, I guess. Just...be careful, alright? They’ve hurt you before. I don’t want you getting hurt again.” The concern in his voice had touched her, but there was nothing she could do to change her decision. She’d already promised Alpha Gavin. So, she’d simply nodded, promising Ryder she’d take care of herself. He didn’t look convinced but gave her a quick hug before letting her go. Now, seated beside the triplets, she wondered if she’d made the right choice. She could have been laughing with Ryder on the beach or watching the stars instead of sitting in this car with old memories and unresolved tension pressing down on her. But Alpha Gavin’s confidence in his sons had made her reconsider, had made her wonder if maybe, just maybe, things could be different. The silence continued to stretch as they drove, each of the triplets focused on the road or, like her, avoiding each other’s eyes. Elora shifted in her seat, watching the road wind on as her thoughts turned over and over. If nothing else, she thought, this is a chance to see if they really have changed. But part of her couldn’t shake the feeling that this trip would bring challenges none of them had anticipated. Sitting in the front seat, Elora shifted uncomfortably. The tension in the car was stifling, and it didn’t help that she felt slightly hot, despite the AC already being on. Talon, who was driving, seemed to notice her fidgeting and cleared his throat before glancing over at her. “Are you comfortable?” he asked, his tone careful, almost gentle. “Not really,” she replied, hesitating for a second. “It’s a little warm in here.” Talon nodded and reached for the air conditioning, turning it up a little more. The cool air was refreshing, and she let out a small sigh of relief. However, as the vents whirred to life, she didn’t realize that her scent was now being carried to the back seat. Almost immediately, she thought she heard a low growl coming from behind her. Elora stiffened and glanced back, her gaze landing on Calin. His normally warm amber eyes had turned pitch black, his expression intense as he stared at her. But it wasn’t anger or frustration she saw—it was something else, something far more unsettling. The air felt charged, and Elora instinctively looked away, her heart racing. Talon and Falon exchanged a glance but didn’t say anything out loud. “Are you guys… mind-linking?” she asked, curious but wary of breaking the silence. Talon and Falon both nodded, and Talon’s lips twitched into a slight smile. “Yeah. Calin’s just… adjusting.” “Adjusting?” Elora raised an eyebrow, stealing a quick glance at Calin, who was now looking out the window, his hands clenched in his lap. His face was expressionless, but there was a tension in his posture that told her he was anything but calm. “Sometimes our wolves have a mind of their own,” Falon offered from the backseat, his tone light as if trying to brush off the moment. “Calin’s wolf is… stubborn, let’s put it that way.” Elora couldn’t help but feel a small flicker of amusement at Falon’s words. “I noticed,” she muttered, and that earned her a slight chuckle from Talon. Trying to dispel the lingering awkwardness, Talon handed her his phone. “Here,” he said. “Why don’t you pick some music? You can play whatever you like.” Elora took the phone, surprised as she scrolled through his playlist. Among the songs, she found a band she recognized immediately—a Post Hardcore group that she’d actually seen in concert with Talia. Without thinking, she clicked on one of their songs, the heavy, electrifying beat filling the car. Talon and Falon exchanged another look, this one less serious and more intrigued. “You like them?” Falon asked, clearly surprised. “Yeah, I went to their concert with Talia a year ago while we were off at college,” Elora replied, her voice a bit more relaxed. The triplets seemed genuinely taken aback. “No way,” Calin finally said, his earlier intensity now softened, replaced by a look of surprised admiration. “We didn’t think you’d be into this kind of music.” “Why not?” Elora challenged, a smirk tugging at her lips. “You don’t know anything about me.” The statement hung in the air for a moment, each of them processing her words. She hadn’t meant to make them feel guilty, but it was the truth—they’d never cared to know her beyond their judgments. But instead of dampening the mood, her comment seemed to act more as a bridge, something that unexpectedly closed the distance between them. “Touché,” Talon said, chuckling. He gave her a grin that seemed almost boyish. As the music played, the triplets relaxed, the invisible wall between them beginning to crumble. They started talking, throwing lighthearted jabs at each other, and soon, Elora found herself caught up in their banter. When one song finished, she picked another, each choice sparking more conversation and laughter. “I can’t believe you thought you could impress a girl by showing off your ‘mad wolf skills’ and ended up tripping over your own feet!” Calin exclaimed, his laughter contagious. Talon smirked. “You weren’t much better when you tried to serenade that girl at the party. I still can’t get over how she walked away shaking her head.” “Her loss, I’m a great singer.” Calin countered. “You’re in a band?” Elora asked Calin excitedly. “He is the only one us with any musical talent.” Falon chimed in. Elora’s laughter bubbled over as she watched the brothers bicker playfully. The trip had transformed from an intimidating prospect to an exhilarating adventure, and she felt herself relaxing into the camaraderie.
