Elora stared out the window, her heart fluttering with anticipation and nerves as the scenery of trees blurred by. The sun streamed through the windshield, warming her face as they drove along the winding road to the lake house. She sat in the back seat, while Talia and her little brother, Tyrese, who was actually the same age as Elora, sat in the front. Tyrese’s hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, his focus split between the road and the music pulsing from the speakers.
“Come on, Ty!” Talia teased, her voice light and playful. She leaned forward, her bright eyes sparkling with mischief. “I can’t believe you’re driving so slow! I thought you were supposed to be a wolf! Show us some speed!”
Tyrese shot her a side-eye, a hint of a grin pulling at his lips. “Hey, this road is very winding and narrow, and we are on the edge of a cliff.” Talia rolled her eyes and called him a chicken before turning the volume up a notch on the car stereo, letting the upbeat song fill the car as she swayed slightly in her seat.
Elora couldn’t help but smile at the easy banter between them. Talia had always been the big sister Elora never had, fiercely protective and fiercely fun. She was raised to be the next Gamma of the pack during high school, but on the day of her high school graduation she told her parents she wanted to pursue a corporate career instead of stepping into the role of Gamma. Her parents were supportive, especially since Tyrese was friends with the future alpha’s and showed an interest in becoming Gamma.
“Seriously though, Ty, you’re supposed to be impressing us with your driving skills. Put the pedal to the metal!” Talia exclaimed, and Elora could feel the tension in her own shoulders easing with the laughter that followed.
Elora shifted in her seat, excitement bubbling in her stomach. The invitation to the lake house had thrown her into a whirlwind of emotions and anxiety about facing the Triplet Alpha’s.
As they neared the lake house, the trees began to thin, revealing glimpses of sparkling water in the distance. Elora took a deep breath, reminding herself of the promise she had made to take this leap of faith. She needed to trust that Talon and his brothers were being genuine about wanting to change, and about wanting to get to know her better.
“Look! There it is!” Tyrese pointed excitedly as the lake house came into view, a beautiful structure nestled among the trees, its wooden facade blending seamlessly with nature. The sun reflected off the water, creating a shimmering path that seemed to beckon them closer.
“About time!” Talia exclaimed dramatically, throwing her hands up. “I thought we’d never get here. I need to soak in some sun and maybe even get a little lake time.”
Elora’s heart raced as they pulled into the driveway, where Talon, Falon, Calin, and Cassius, their Beta were already gathered. The triplets stood with their arms crossed, watching their car approach. Elora’s stomach fluttered at the sight of them.
Talia looked back at Elora. “Are you ready?” She asked, checking on her friend.
Elora nodded, and a smile tugged at her lips despite the fluttering nerves.
“About time.” Cassius teased as they got out of the car.
Tyrese rolled his eyes as everyone laughed at the future Gamma.
The fresh scent of pine greeted Elora, invigorating her senses as she took in the surroundings.
As they approached the house, Talon stepped forward, his confident stride and warm smile filling her with a strange sense of welcome. “Glad you could make it!” he said directly to Elora.
“Let me show you guys where the magic happens!” Calin announced to the group with a mischievous grin, gesturing for everyone to follow him. The triplets led the way up the porch steps, their laughter echoing in the air as they opened the door to the spacious interior of the lake house. Sunlight poured in through large windows, illuminating the cozy living space adorned with wooden accents and plush furnishings.
“Okay, here’s the layout,” Calin continued, pointing out the various rooms. “This is the main area where we’ll hang out, and over here is the kitchen.” He led them through a short hallway, where doors lined the walls. “Each of you gets your own room so you guys can pick whichever one you like.”
Elora’s heart raced as she scanned the doors. Talia, who had been right beside her, gave her a reassuring nudge. “I call dibs on this one!” she exclaimed, opening the door to a sunlit room with a view of the lake. Elora felt a wave of relief wash over her when she saw the room next to Talia’s was vacant and equally bright and no one else tried to claim it.
Elora slipped into her room and tossed her bag onto the bed. She quickly glanced around at the tasteful decor, feeling grateful for the comforting vibe. This was going to be a weekend to remember.
“Change into your swimsuit!” Talia called from the hallway, her voice brimming with enthusiasm. “You know, one of the ones we bought together!”
Elora’s heart sank. Talia had convinced her to get a few bikinis with varying degrees of lack of modesty. She hesitated, before opening her bag. She had never worn a bikini before, and the thought of exposing herself made her stomach twist with dread. But she knew Talia wouldn’t take no for an answer.
With a deep breath, Elora rummaged through her bag, finally settling on a vibrant red bikini that she had reluctantly bought after Talia’s insistence. It covered her more than the other ones. She closed the door, her cheeks warming as she stripped off her clothes and slipped into the bikini. As she looked in the mirror, she felt a flutter of insecurity. It was a beautiful suit, but did it really flatter her?
Determined to feel more comfortable, she reached for a light, flowy swim cover-up that she paired with the bikini. Taking one last look at herself, she stepped out of the room and walked down the hall, her heart pounding with each step.
When she joined Talia and the boys, they were already congregated around the grill on the deck, their playful banter filling the air. Talon, Falon, and Calin were all clad in snug swim trunks that accentuated their athletic builds, and Elora felt a mix of awe and embarrassment as she approached them.
“Look who finally decided to join us!” Cassius teased. Elora only looked away embarrassed.
“Let’s hit the water!” Talia exclaimed, leaving the boys to handle dinner. She grabbed Elora’s hand and tugged her towards the dock. “You’re going to love it!”
Elora hesitated, her nerves bubbling up again. She felt exposed in a way she wasn’t used to, but Talia’s excitement was infectious. “Just take it off! You look amazing in that bikini!” Talia urged, and Elora felt her cheeks heat up.
With a deep breath, she pulled off her cover-up, her heart racing as she revealed the bikini beneath. Then she waited. She waited for one of the boys to make a hurtful comment. But several seconds passed and they said nothing. She dared to look back at them and was surprised to not only find the triplets staring at her, but also the looks they gave her were not of disgust. They were more intense and sent shivers down her spine.
“See? Not so bad!” Talia cheered, snapping Elora’s attention away from the triplets. Before Elora could second-guess herself, Talia grabbed her arm and pulled her towards the edge of the dock. “Come on, jump in with me!”
Elora’s heart raced as she found herself teetering at the edge of the dock. The shimmering lake below was crystal clear, and she could see the bottom of the lake. With one final glance at the triplets, who still had the intense expression that made her heart skip, she took the plunge.
With a quick inhale, she jumped into the cool water, feeling the refreshing rush engulf her. Talia followed right after, their laughter echoing above the surface as they surfaced together, spluttering and giggling.
“This is amazing” Talia shouted and then splashed Elora playfully.
Elora couldn’t stop laughing as Talia splashed water in her direction, her laughter joining the bright afternoon sun shimmering across the lake. Just as she regained her composure, she heard a loud splash behind her, and she turned to see Calin and Cassius breaking through the water’s surface, grinning widely.
“Trying to run away, are we?” Calin teased, a glint of mischief in his eyes. Elora felt her cheeks heat up but managed a nonchalant shrug, attempting to hide the thrill that his attention that somehow stirred within her.
“You wish,” she replied, playfully swimming a bit farther from him, but keeping within the small group.
Talia smirked, noticing the subtle exchange. “Careful, Elora,” she called. “These guys are competitive. You don’t want to give them an excuse to chase you.”
Cassius laughed, shaking his head. “Actually, I’m here to relax,” he said.
“Let’s play Marco Polo!” Callin said excitedly, dismissing Cassius’s idea.
“I don’t want to play childish games,” Cassius retorted.
“Marco Polo isn’t just a game—it’s a test of agility,” Calin argued with a grin, his eyes narrowing as he challenged them.
Cassius rolled his eyes, but a smirk crept into his face. “Fine, but only if you’re it.”
Calin raised his hands in mock surrender, closing his eyes and turning his face towards the sky. “Fair enough,” he replied. “Marco!”
“Polo!” everyone chorused, voices echoing across the lake as they swam in different directions. Elora tried to keep her distance from Calin.
“Marco!” Calin’s voice was closer this time, and Elora stifled a laugh as she moved away from him.
“Polo!” she called, watching as Calin’s hands skimmed the water, searching blindly for one of them. After a few more rounds of yelling ‘Polo!’, Elora noticed Calin kept moving in her direction, narrowing the distance between them with every call. Her heart thumped as she tried to maneuver away, but he seemed to anticipating her every move.
In a swift motion, Calin’s hands found hers, his fingers wrapping gently around her wrist and then the other went around her waist. Elora gasped, feeling the warmth of his touch, and their eyes met as he opened his. There was an intensity in his gaze that left her momentarily breathless.
“Gotcha,” he murmured, his voice just loud enough for her to hear over the splashing and laughter around them.
Elora’s cheeks flushed, her nerves tingling under his steady gaze.
