Chapter 10 - Elora's POV (Part 2)

1826 Words
Talia swam over, splashing both of them. “I think you found what you were looking for, Calin!” Then Calin loosened his grip, letting her hand slip from his with a slight smirk. Calin shot Talia a mock glare, but Elora could see the humor in his eyes as he shook his head. “Guess I’m just good at this game,” he replied, though his gaze lingered on Elora for a second longer before he let out a playful sigh. “Alright, Elora you’re next.” Before they could start another round, Tyrese called out, “Food’s ready!” The group looked up to see him waving them back to the deck, where the tantalizing aroma of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers filled the air. Talon and Falon had set up a picnic-style spread with chips, soda, and all the fixings, and everyone made their way over. Elora quickly pulled on her cover-up before joining the others, her cheeks still warm from her moment with Calin. He was just being playful. Don’t overthink it. Elora told herself. They all gathered around the outdoor dining table. The sun had begun its descent, casting a golden glow over the lake and filling the evening with a sense of peace. The laughter and conversations were easy and lighthearted as they dug into their meal. Elora found herself relaxing even more, realizing how comfortable she felt surrounded by everyone. Despite Talia being a few years older than the rest, her energy meshed seamlessly with the group. Elora watched her friend as she animatedly teased Tyrese about his grilling skills, which earned her an affectionate eyeroll. The familiar camaraderie and genuine friendships around the table made Elora feel included in a way she hadn’t ever experienced. After everyone finished eating, they decided to keep the fun going with board games. Cassius brought out a stack, and they settled on an intense game of Uno. It wasn’t long before accusations of cheating and playful glares flew across the table as each person strategized and sabotaged in equal measure. Talia couldn’t resist ganging up with Elora to block Calin, making him groan every time he had to draw extra cards. Amid the laughter and competitive banter, Elora felt a joy she rarely allowed herself to indulge in. As the sky turned to a deep twilight, they moved inside to the living room, setting up for a movie marathon. Elora was the last to come in after helping to clear the dishes, only to realize there was one open spot left on the couches. She glanced around, feeling a small tug of nerves when she realized her only option was the space between Falon and Calin. With a shy smile, she tried to sit on the floor but Calin motioned for her to sit between them. She nervously slipped in between Falon and Calin, trying not to touch them. Calin casually stretched his arm along the back of the couch, his fingers resting just shy of her shoulder, while Falon didn’t move. The heat of their presence made it difficult for her to concentrate on the movie’s opening scene, and she found herself stealing glances at them whenever they laughed or reacted to the film. Halfway through the movie, Elora’s nerves started to settle, and she began to relax into the rhythm of their lighthearted teasing. She even forgot about the initial tension as she got caught up in the storyline. At one point, an intense scene caused Elora to gasp, and without thinking, she instinctively leaned into Falon. He gave her a curious look, but said nothing. Elora still quickly pulled back, flustered. When the credits finally rolled, Calin stretched with a yawn, playfully nudging Elora’s arm. “So, scaredy-cat, how’d you like it?” Elora rolled her eyes, giving him a mock glare. “You were hiding behind your hand during that one scene, don’t think I didn’t notice!” Falon chuckled, “Ouch, calling him out like that, Elora? I’m impressed.” Everyone laughed. As the group settled in for another movie, a sequel to the one they had just watched, Talon moved down from the couch across the room and sat on the floor in front of Elora. With a smirk, he leaned back, his shoulder brushing against her knees. The casual contact sent a small jolt through Elora, and she nervously tucked her legs closer to her chest. Her heartbeat quickened as she tried to focus on the screen, but Talon’s closeness made it nearly impossible. The sequel was just as terrifying as the first, and every jump scare had the whole room on edge. She glanced around, noticing how Talia was huddled against her brother, half-hidden behind a pillow. In the dim light, she could barely make out Talon’s face as he flinched with each sudden fright on-screen. She wasn’t sure if he was genuinely scared or just playing along, but there was something oddly reassuring about him being there. Despite her initial nerves, his proximity somehow made her feel a little braver. When the movie finally ended, a collective sigh of relief swept through the room. Talia broke the silence, laughing and suggesting they switch to something lighthearted before bed, and everyone quickly agreed. The tension lifted as they traded horror for a comedy, and laughter soon replaced the nervous energy left from the previous films. Elora settled deeper into the couch, her eyelids growing heavy as the movie’s humor lulled her into a sense of calm. Gradually, her head drifted downward, and she didn’t notice that she had leaned over until her cheek rested gently against something solid but warm. She was too tired to figure it out, the day’s events and the back-to-back scares finally catching up to her. She drifted off, her breathing steadying as her body relaxed. Unbeknownst to her, she had fallen asleep on Falon’s shoulder, her head nestled comfortably against him. But he did not notice, since he had fallen asleep before she did. Across the couch, Calin had drifted off as well, his body shifted closer to Elora’s. In his sleep, he subconsciously adjusted his position, his arm wrapping around her waist. His body nestled comfortably against her back, creating a cozy spooning position as the three of them slept soundly on the couch, oblivious to the world around them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Talon’s POV Everyone decided after the scary movie that they should watch a more lighthearted movie. They may have been werewolves, but somehow a scary guy with a chain saw still got them. As the closing credits of the light-hearted comedy rolled across the screen, a serene quiet fell over the room. Talia yawned, stretching her arms as she glanced around. She then motioned for everyone to look at the three bodies nestled together on the couch. Elora was flanked by Falon and Calin, her head resting on Falon’s shoulder while Calin awkwardly spooned her. Tyrese chuckled, shaking his head. “Guess that scary movie drained more out of them than we thought. Or maybe Elora’s just got that effect on people.” Cassius leaned in, smiling as he took in the sight. “It’s nice to see her resting without that wary look in her eyes.” Talia nodded thoughtfully. She’d seen Elora on guard countless times, her walls firmly in place to protect herself from everyone around her. But now, nestled between Falon and Calin, she looked peaceful, like she had finally found a place to feel safe. The realization brought a warmth to Talia’s heart—Elora deserved this. “Well,” Talon said, stretching as he rose from his spot, “I’ll stay down here with them. You guys should get to bed.” “Are you sure?” Talia asked, her eyes lingering on Talon with a hint of concern. “There’s no need to sleep on the floor.” Talon waved her off. “Nah, I’m good here.” He glanced at the couch, his gaze softening as he looked at Elora. “I just… want to stay close. Make sure she’s okay.” Understanding passed through Talia’s expression, and she smiled knowingly. “Alright. But don’t come crying to me tomorrow if your back hurts.” He chuckled. “Duly noted.” One by one, the others bid him goodnight and quietly made their way upstairs, leaving Talon alone in the dimly lit living room. He turned back to the couch, taking a quiet moment to take in the scene. His brothers were breathing steadily, Elora’s gentle breaths matching theirs. The peaceful rhythm pulled at something deep inside him. Silently, he grabbed a throw blanket from a nearby chair and draped it over them, adjusting it so Elora was fully covered. The soft fabric brushed her cheek, and she stirred slightly, murmuring something under her breath before settling back down. Talon’s gaze softened. When he invited her on this weekend away, he had assured his brothers it was only to pay her back for helping him and also show their father that they had changed after they had spent a month reading those books, but the more time they spent with her the more they felt drawn to her. He knew it was the mate bond fighting them as they fought against its will and as the night wore on they had surrendered to it. Not wanting to disturb them, Talon sank down on the floor next to the couch, resting his back against its frame. After a moment of hesitation, he reached out, gently taking Elora’s hand in his. Her fingers curled around his instinctively, warm and steady. A faint smile flickered over her lips as if she could sense his presence, even in sleep. The sensation of her hand in his brought a calm Talon wasn’t used to feeling. The tensions, the expectations, and all the unspoken fears melted away, replaced by something warm and quiet. It was a simple moment, and yet it felt more powerful than any words or promises he could make. He settled in, his thumb lightly brushing over her fingers as he allowed himself to relax. The sound of their gentle breathing surrounded him, a comforting lullaby that tugged at his own tiredness. His eyelids grew heavy, the world around him blurring as sleep pulled him down. In his final moments of wakefulness, Talon’s mind drifted over the past few days, the twists and turns that had brought him to this point. He hadn’t expected to find something like this, especially not with her—a person who had, until recently, been little more than a distant figure in the pack. But now, as he sat there, connected to her by the simplest of gestures, he felt a certainty he hadn’t known he was missing. As he closed his eyes, he whispered softly, almost as if she could hear him in her dreams, “We’ll protect you, our Luna. No matter what.”
