Chapter 9: A Quiet Shift

1234 Words
The palace had never felt this full… and yet this hollow. Voices carried faintly through the corridors beyond her chamber doors; servants moving, guards shifting positions, life continuing as it always had. And still, something about it felt… distant. Like she was watching it all from behind glass. Selene sat near the tall windows of her chamber, one hand resting over the gentle curve of her stomach. Selene had begun to notice the difference long before anyone said it aloud. Six months into her pregnancy, the changes had become impossible to ignore. The child moved often now, small rolling shifts and stretches that made her pause mid-thought just to feel them fully. Some days, the joy overwhelmed her. Other days, it terrified her. Because this wasn’t just a child, it was an heir. A target. A future that others might try to control. Each movement grounded her, reminded her that no matter what stirred beyond these walls, something precious and steady was growing within her. Her senses had sharpened over the past months. Emotions in a room felt louder, even when unspoken. Evangeline had explained it was natural, the bond between mother and heir strengthening both wolf and spirit. Her wolf was stronger now. Not aggressive, but ancient. As though something older had woken inside her blood. "The heir grows powerful," Evangeline had said days earlier, voice hushed with awe and concern. Selene exhaled slowly, staring at the fireplace. Still, Selene couldn’t ignore the way the palace guards rotated more frequently… or how Orion and Sable spent longer hours in counsel chambers. Which was why, when the three of them entered her room together that evening, she already knew what they’d come to say. “You’re leaving,” she said before anyone spoke. Orion didn’t deny it. He gave a small nod, measured and calm. “Only for a while,” he replied. “There’s movement along the outer regions. Nothing alarming, but enough that we should be present.” Orion stepped closer, the air around him thickening with that undeniable pull she felt every time he neared. His fingers brushed hers as he reached for a book on the nightstand, but the touch lingered longer than necessary, sending shivers up her arm. She tried to focus, tried to steady her racing heart, but when he crouched slightly to meet her gaze, the room seemed to shrink around them. “It’s okay,” he murmured. “Think of it as prevention,” he added. “Keeping things settled before they have a chance to become… unsettled.” The warmth in his words, combined with the faint scent of him: earthy, strong, familiar, made her knees weak. His presence always did this to her—unraveled her carefully held control, piece by piece, until all that remained was instinct and something dangerously close to need. Her wolf whimpered beneath her skin, urging her forward while her human side screamed to pull back. “Orion…” she breathed, but her voice was barely audible, lost in the magnetic tension that wrapped around them like a second skin. He closed the distance slowly, deliberately, giving her every second to pull away. But she didn’t. She couldn’t. And when his hand gently cupped her cheek, her breath hitched, heart pounding so loudly it felt like it could betray her secret to the world. Their lips met in a soft, testing kiss. It wasn’t rough, it wasn’t hurried; it was tender, full of promise and unspoken desire. Selene’s hands hovered over his chest before settling there, feeling the steady beat of his heart under her fingers, grounding her even as the butterflies exploded in her stomach –Or was it the baby? When they pulled back, both of them breathing unevenly, Orion’s smirk was playful but loaded with unspoken meaning. “See? This bond… it’s stronger than you think. And it’s only just beginning.” Selene swallowed hard, a blush rising to her cheeks, wolf whining low in excitement and warning. “I… I don’t know how to handle this,” she admitted, voice trembling. “You won’t have to handle it alone,” he whispered, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. “I’m here. Always. And nothing, no danger, will make me let go of you.” The room felt smaller, warmer, and somehow, safer, even with the danger lingering outside their walls. And in that intimate silence, Selene realized something terrifying and exhilarating: the bond wasn’t just a pull. It was a tether, connecting them in ways she was only beginning to understand, and nothing could break it. Evangeline moved closer, kneeling before Selene. Her palm hovered over Selene’s stomach. "The child's aura grows brighter each day," she whispered. "By the seventh month it will be impossible to conceal." Selene swallowed. Seven months. So little time left. "And the birth?" she asked. Evangeline’s gaze lifted. "That will be the moment the world shifts," she said softly. Selene gave her a faint smile a Evangeline stood up, heading for the door. Orion moved closer to Selene, resting his forehead against hers, his hand moved instinctively to her stomach, thumb brushing lightly over the curve. “Our child is strong,” he murmured. Selene covered his hand with hers. “Just like their father.” He huffed a soft laugh at that, but it faded quickly into something more serious… more tender. Selene felt it then: a flutter, gentle but unmistakable. Her breath caught. The baby kicked. Her hand moved instinctively to her stomach. Orion felt it too. His entire body stilled, like the world had narrowed to that single moment. Slowly, he lowered his head, “Was that—?” She nodded, eyes shining despite herself. Something dangerous crossed his face then. Not anger. Devotion. The kind that ruins men for anything else. Orion’s hand lingered on her stomach a moment longer, thumb brushing softly over the curve, as if memorizing it. Another soft kick fluttered. Selene smiled despite herself. Orion crouched slowly, pressing his forehead against her stomach like it was the most natural thing in the world. He closed his eyes. “I don’t know what I’m doing,” he murmured. “But I know this: nothing touches you without going through me.” Her chest ached. The good kind. The terrifying kind. “Orion,” she whispered. He looked up. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The world narrowed again. Not urgency. Not hunger. Something deeper. His hand slid into hers, fingers lacing together. Solid. Steady. “We’ll do this right,” he said. “Together.” Selene nodded, heart full, fear quiet. Selene leaned into him instinctively, the warmth of his body grounding her even as her heart raced. For a long, quiet heartbeat, they stayed like that; connected, tethered, aware of the life they carried and the bond that refused to be ignored. They lay together afterward, Selene tucked carefully against his side, his arm around her in a protective cradle that never loosened, even as sleep began to pull at them. For a while, neither spoke. They simply stayed there… memorizing warmth, breath, presence. Because by dawn, duty would take him beyond the palace walls again. And moments like this would have to last until his return. Somewhere beyond the walls, something shifted. Not loud. Not obvious. But enough that her wolf stirred uneasily beneath her skin.
