Chapter 10: The Silence That Followed

1288 Words
The cabin had been quiet since they arrived, but not the kind of quiet that soothed. This one pressed in, clinging to the walls and settling into Selene's chest until every breath felt a little tighter than it should. The night had settled around them long before sleep finally claimed them. Selene lay tucked against Orion’s side, his arm still wrapped around her even in rest, his presence as steady in sleep as it was when he was awake. For a few quiet hours, everything had been still. No tension. Just warmth, breath, and the soft, rhythmic reminder of the life growing between them. But peace never lingered for long. Orion's eyes opened sometime deep into the night. He lay still for a moment, instinct dragging him fully awake before duty settled over him. The outer regions. The movement they couldn't ignore. He exhaled slowly. Carefully, he shifted, trying not to wake her but Selene stirred anyway. Her hand tightened slightly against his chest before her eyes fluttered open, unfocused at first, then sharpening as she took him in. “You’re awake,” she murmured, her voice thick with sleep. Orion gave a small nod, his hand brushing lightly over her arm. “I didn’t mean to wake you.” “You didn’t,” she said softly, though the truth lingered between them. She felt it. The distance creeping back in where moments ago there had been warmth. “You’re leaving,” she added quietly. This time, he didn’t try to soften it. “Yes.” Silence stretched between them; not heavy, not tense, but real. Selene pushed herself up slightly, one hand moving instinctively to her stomach as the baby shifted faintly beneath her palm. Orion noticed immediately. His gaze dropped, his hand following hers, resting gently over the curve of her stomach. For a moment, everything else faded again. “I won’t be gone for long,” he said, quieter now. Selene studied him. The calm in his expression, the control but beneath it, she saw it. The readiness. The weight of what waited beyond the palace walls. “You’re not going alone,” she said. It wasn’t a question. Orion’s brows pulled together slightly. “Selene—” “It’s safer this way,” she cut in, her voice still soft but steadier now. “You said it yourself. Things are shifting. And if that’s true, then I shouldn’t be here… waiting for whatever finds its way to me.” A pause. He didn’t answer immediately. Because he knew she wasn’t wrong. Beyond them, the forest stretched endlessly; dark, and watchful. Every rustle of leaves, every whisper of wind seemed louder than it should have been, as if the world itself was leaning closer, listening. Selene steadied herself as another firm kick pressed beneath her palm. Her breath caught. Orion noticed immediately, his gaze dropping to her stomach. "She's active," he murmured. His voice was low, almost reverent. She. Selene swallowed, heat curling slowly up her spine at the way he said it, like it already meant everything. “She’s… strong,” she admitted quietly. Six months. Six months, and already this child was making herself known in ways Selene couldn’t ignore. Alive and demanding. The truth of it settled deeper than it ever had before, pressing into her chest until it felt almost overwhelming. Orion stepped closer. His hand reached up, brushing a loose strand of hair back from her face, his fingers lingering just a second longer than necessary. The warmth of his touch grounded her, steadying something that threatened to spiral."Every movement is her reminding us she's here," he said quietly. "She's fighting to meet us." Selene let out a quiet breath, her fingers tightening slightly against her stomach as another small movement followed. “I don’t know if I can do this,” she whispered. The words slipped out before she could stop them. Her gaze dropped. Orion didn’t hesitate. “You can.” His voice was firm this time. He stepped closer until there was no space left between them, pressing his forehead gently against hers. The contact was grounding, steady, unyielding in a way that forced her to focus on him. “And you won’t do it alone,” he added, quieter now. “Not ever.” The certainty in his voice settled something inside her. For the first time that night, she believed him. His hand moved over hers, resting gently against her stomach. Another kick. This one stronger. Selene gasped softly, her fingers pressing instinctively against him. Orion’s lips curved slightly. “She knows,” he murmured. Selene blinked. “Knows what?” “That I’m here.” A hint of amusement in his voice now, but it didn’t quite hide the intensity beneath it. “That this is where she’s safe.” Selene let out a soft laugh, shaking her head slightly, though her hand didn’t move from his. “You’re ridiculous,” she said, but there was no bite to it. “Am I?” he countered, his gaze locking with hers. His voice dropped, "She's part of both of us. Every movement reminds us of that." That hit deeper than she expected. Selene’s breath slowed, her body easing just slightly as the truth of it settled into her bones. She was not alone. For a moment, the world narrowed. The tension outside the cabin, the weight of everything waiting beyond those walls; it all blurred, fading into something distant and unimportant. Another small movement pressed against her palm. Selene smiled softly, her thumb brushing over the curve of her stomach. “She’s already stubborn,” she murmured. Orion huffed a quiet laugh. “She gets that from you.” Selene shot him a look, but it lacked any real sharpness. From the doorway, a quiet voice cut through the moment. The door opened. Sable entered first, Evangeline close behind. "The palace isn't as secure as it used to be," Evangeline said quietly. Sable's gaze swept the darkness beyond the chamber. "This silence isn't peace. It's waiting." Orion exhaled slowly, his jaw tightening just slightly. He looked back at Selene. Then at her hand, still resting over their child. And something in him shifted. “…Fine. You are going to have to come with me,” he said at last. “But you stay close. No risks.” Selene’s lips curved faintly. “I wasn’t planning on taking any.” Sable stepped forward from the edge of the clearing, her expression sharp, her posture already tense. “We need to stay alert,” she said, her tone sharp. Evangeline moved beside her, quieter but no less focused. Selene’s body reacted instantly. Her wolf stirred beneath her skin, low and uneasy. Another kick followed. Much sharper this time. Her hand pressed more firmly against her stomach, her breath catching slightly. “She feels it too,” Selene whispered. Orion’s entire demeanor shifted. He straightened, his gaze snapping toward the treeline, every muscle in his body tightening with quiet readiness. “Positions,” he said. Sable didn’t hesitate. She moved instantly, slipping into the shadows with practiced precision. Evangeline followed, her movements fluid, silent, deadly. Selene drew a slow breath to steady herself. Orion brushed her arm. "Nothing gets close," he said quietly. Selene nodded, though her fingers tightened slightly against her stomach. Another sound–faint, but it was there. Selene’s wolf growled low beneath her ribs. Warning her. Every instinct screamed at her that the danger hadn’t passed, it had only shifted. The door closed behind them, but the silence followed. Selene rested a hand over her stomach as the baby shifted uneasily. Whatever waited beyond the trees hadn't gone anywhere. It was simply waiting.
