The morning after a storm... when the ground is still wet and the sky is deciding whether to thunder again. The pack’s grounds felt heavy, thick with murmurs and suspicion. Selene didn't have to ask what had changed. She felt it. Eyes lingered longer than usual. Whispers didn't bother hiding anymore. The truth had spread farther than they wanted it to. m The arranged mate had seen to that. What was once guarded now moved through the palace like wildfire: Selene, the Omega carrying the Alpha’s child. And in a court of bloodlines and hierarchy, it wasn't scandal. It was insult.
Selene moved like a shadow along the edges, trying not to draw attention, hands unconsciously brushing her stomach. It had become an instinctive move. Her wolf stirred inside her, aware of a presence she hadn't seen yet. "Selene," a voice hissed, low and urgent. Sable’s dark eyes found hers. "We have trouble." Her pulse kicked. "What kind of trouble?" she asked, trying to keep her voice even. Sable’s jaw tightened. "The palace arranged mate... she's making a scene. And the truth.. isn't going the way we planned." Selene froze. Palace politics were a storm she didn't want to step into. Yet here she was, already dragged into the undercurrents, the intrigue, the whispers of betrayal. From the treeline, Orion appeared like a shadow made flesh, shoulders broad, jaws sharp, golden eyes flicking to hers. He approached slowly, each step precise and controlled. "I heard," he said. "Tell me everything," voice low, threaded with steel.
She swallowed, nodding. "It's worse than we thought. The arranged mate... she cheated. Publicly. The pack’s talking. If this spreads, they'll use it against you.. against me." Orion's jaw tightened.
"This wasn't carelessness," he said. "Someone wanted the truth exposed."
Selene's stomach tightened.
"To turn the pack against us?"
He nodded once.
"Which is why this ends now. I protect you. No one hurts my mate. No one hurts our child.” Her throat tightened. He said our child, and her heart, skipped. "And the palace?" she whispered. "They'll try to stop us." Orion’s smirk was sharp, dangerous. "Let them try." Reality hit–enemies lurked, the pack was fractured, and her secret was a blade ready to cut her if anyone discovered it too soon. "We have to leave," she said, urgency threading her voice. "If they get wind of this before we act... it could ruin everything." Orion nodded, hand still holding onto hers, steady and protective.
"We leave at nightfall," Orion said.
Sable and Evangeline stepped from the shadows, already prepared.
Selene nodded, letting determination settle in.
Whatever waited ahead, they would face it together.
Side by side, Orion, Selene, Sable, and Evangeline would fight, endure, and confront whatever storm awaited them.
And since she’d fled her family, since the one night that had changed everything, Selene felt a flicker of power, of hope, and of dangerous, undeniable love. And she knew, deep in her bones, that the journey ahead would demand everything: her courage, and the bond she could no longer deny.
Night fell slowly, like the world itself was holding its breath. By the time the moon climbed high, the pack grounds had gone quiet; watchful. The kind where shadows felt alive and every snapped twig sounded like a warning.
Selene pulled her cloak tighter as she stepped past the borders of the pack for the first time since arriving. The forest swallowed them in silence. Orion walked beside her, every step alert. "Once we cross the eastern ridge, we enter neutral territory," he said lowly, "rogues pass through there. So do traders, spies and worse." Selene swallowed nervously, but nodded. "You think the truth about the arranged mate started there?" "Cheating doesn't just 'happen' in palace alliances. It's used," Orion replied, eyes scanning the trees. Used. The word sat heavy in her chest.
They moved deeper into the forest. Owls called in the distance.
The wind carried scents Selene didn't recognize; wild, sharp, unfamiliar. She slowed slightly. "We're being watched." Orion stopped instantly. "I know. I can sense it," he murmured.
A branch snapped somewhere to their left. Too deliberate to be an animal. Orion stepped in front of her without thinking, his arm out as if shielding her from an unseen blade. "Stay behind me." Sable and Evangeline readied themselves, awaiting whatever it may be that was about to emerge from the darkness. Movement flickered, then stopped. Not attacking. Just observing. Orion’s eyes glowed faintly gold. "You followed us a long way," he called into the trees. "Show yourself." An eerie silence settled around them. A hooded figure stepped into the moonlight.
"You're searching for betrayal, Alpha," the stranger said.
Their gaze shifted to Selene.
"The rumors are true."
Orion's voice hardened.
"Talk."
The stranger smiled.
"Find your answers at the Broken Crescent Ruins."
Then they were gone. Selene exhaled shakily. "Broken Crescent... what is that?" "An abandoned stronghold," Sable said quietly. "Old alliance ground. If secrets are being traded.. it would happen there," Evangeline added. Orion turned to her. "We turn back now. I would never forgive myself if anything happened to you or our child. I must protect you." Orion’s jaw tightened, eyes scanning the shadows as if daring the hooded figure to return.
He took Selene’s hand, a silent promise in the firm grip. “We leave nothing to chance,” he said. They retraced their steps through the forest, quiet and swift, the night air thick with anticipation. Sable moved just behind Orion, alert, every sense tuned to the surrounding darkness. Evangeline lingered closer to Selene, her presence calm but watchful, a tether grounding her.
Back at the palace, the gates closed silently behind them. The halls seemed unusually still, the whispers of earlier already settling into murmurs. Orion guided Selene to her cabin, a place that now felt like a fortress more than a room. Sable and Evangeline immediately took positions, checking locks, reinforcing windows, and ensuring no one could approach unnoticed. Selene sank into the chair by the window, exhausted yet alert, her hands resting lightly on her stomach.
“You’re safe here,” Evangeline said, voice soft but firm. “Always within reach. Call, and we are there.” Sable’s dark gaze swept the hallway one last time. “No one will touch you. Not while we stand.” Selene exhaled, a shaky laugh escaping her lips. The palace, the intrigue, the danger, it all still hung over her. But with Orion, Sable, and Evangeline watching over her, she felt the tiniest thread of ease. Selene remained in the warmth of her cabin, protected, breathing steady, her hand resting over the life growing within her. The storm was coming, she could feel it in the air, in the whispers, in the way fate seemed to hold its breath. Outside, the night carried the quiet promise of the Broken Crescent ruins, a challenge waiting to be faced. But inside, for now, she was protected. And for now… that was enough.
