Chapter 7: The Arranged Mate

1168 Words
The palace hall seemed quieter than usual, the usual hum of whispered conversations and shifting feet muted by the weight of expectation. This was the kind of room where decisions were made, alliances weighed, and power measured with a glance. Every eye in the hall seemed to trace their progress, assessing, judging and measuring her worth. Selene’s wolf stirred, alert, coiling around the edges of her awareness. Orion’s hand brushed hers, grounding her, reminding her that she wasn’t alone. She took a steadying breath, calming herself. Theron’s gaze lingered on her for a moment longer, sharp and deliberate. “You’ve made your choice, Orion,” he said slowly, each word measured. “But you should know… not all things can be chosen freely.” Orion’s brow tightened. "Explain." A faint smile flickered at the corner of Theron's lips. "The pack has... traditions. Arrangements. Plans that were made long before tonight. A mate for you, Orion, has already been chosen." Selene felt her stomach drop. A mate? For him? Her mind went blank for a second before instinct and the bond flaring against her chest reminded her to breathe. Orion’s jaw clenched. "And?" His voice was calm but it carried the weight of warning. Theron’s gaze didn't waver. "And the one chosen will appear at the next gathering: the ball. It will be proper. No one will mistake the arrangement." Selene’s wolf growled low, alert and uneasy. The palace felt suddenly colder, even larger. She felt Orion’s hand tighten over hers. His presence flared, protective, daring. He turned to Selene. "You brought me here," Orion said softly. "Whatever comes next, we face it together." Selene nodded, swallowing hard. The court, the palace, the politics and traditions, they didn't matter. Not while they were together. Not while she carried his child. But deep down, she knew one thing: the arrival of his arranged mate would change everything. The ball had begun. Night had settled fully over the palace, the sky outside draped in velvet dark, light spilling across polished floors that reflected every tense footstep. Music drifted through the air, soft but commanding, as nobles and wolves alike filled the grand hall in silks and shadows. Every chandelier burned bright overhead; a clear signal that the evening’s games, politics, and performances had officially begun. The palace was colder than the forest. Selene had never felt more out of place in her life. The walls were lined with portraits of Alphas past, their golden eyes seeming to follow her every move. She pressed her hands over her stomach instinctively, feeling the life growing there as both a blessing and a burden. Orion walked beside her, his presence was a shield she could feel even if she couldn’t see it. Golden eyes scanning, jaw tight, shoulders rigid. He was calm, but the way he held himself, ready, alert, it told her that every shadow here held a threat. Alpha Theron walked up to them. “You’ll meet her soon,” Theron said. “Your… arranged mate.” Selene froze. Anxiety ran through her veins. She had heard whispers about the political alliances, the Alpha families trying to manipulate bloodlines. But the thought of another mate being forced into her life? Her pulse quickened; not from fear this time, but from a mix of dread and anger. “She’s… already here?” she asked, keeping her voice steady. Theron’s smirk was faint, predatory. “Yes. And she knows a lot more than you think. About you.” Her stomach knotted tighter. He didn’t need to say it. She could feel it: the tension, the pull of the bond inside her, shifting and tightening as though it sensed every approaching danger. They entered a grand hall, towering ceilings throwing long shadows across the floor. Sable and Evangeline followed close behind Orion and Selene, like silent guards. Their presence alone made it clear that the Alpha’s strength wasn’t just power, but the people who stood beside him, unshaken by any threat. A woman emerged from the shadows. Sleek, dark hair, eyes like ice, posture perfectly controlled. She moved with the grace of a wolf born to command. Selene’s pulse quickened from recognition. This was no ordinary woman. She was Orion’s… rival. Even worse.. his arranged mate. “I hope you’re comfortable here,” the woman said, voice sweet but sharp enough to cut glass. “It must be difficult… coming into the palace with… complications.” Selene’s hands clenched. "Complications?” The woman smiled, faint and venomous. “A secret… easily discovered.” She let her gaze linger over Selene’s stomach, subtle but pointed. Orion’s jaw tightened beside her, his hand brushing hers, as a silent promise. “Enough,” he said, voice low and dangerous. “She’s here to observe, not to threaten.” But the woman didn’t step back. “Observation often becomes interference,” she said lightly. “And in this palace… interference is power.” Sable’s eyes flicked between the two women, calculating, protective. Evangeline stayed calm, but Selene could feel her watchful gaze as though she were a tether keeping her from unraveling completely. Orion’s hand found hers again. “Whatever happens," he said, reassuring her. "we face it together. Always." Selene swallowed, letting his strength seep into her bones. The bond between them flared, not just protective, but demanding. It was no longer subtle, no longer just a pull in the shadows. It was a force that would not be ignored. The woman approached the throne, setting herself with perfect posture, eyes still moving over Selene. "You should know, Alpha," she said, words measured, "that alliances are delicate. Secrets are weapons. And children... well, they are the sharpest blade of all." Selene froze, her life, her unborn child, everything she had, was being tested and used as leverage. She wanted to run, to disappear, but the tether inside her throbbed with Orion’s presence, anchoring her. "Not while I'm here," Orion replied, stepping between Selene and the woman. His golden gaze was intense, unwavering. "Not now. Not ever. This child, this bond.. belongs to me and her. And no one will use it as a weapon while I stand. " The woman’s lips curved faintly, acknowledging the challenge without fear. "We'll see, Alpha. The palace has its own rules. One day... even you will learn that not every bond can protect what it claims." Selene’s heart hammered, wolf growling beneath her ribs, but she stood taller. With Orion beside her, with Sable and Evangeline watching, she realized something important: the palace, the intrigue, the whispers; they could not touch her unless she let them. Orion leaned close, his lips near her ear. "Do not forget," he whispered, gold eyes smoldering, "whatever comes, Selene.. we face it together. You, me.. and this bond. Nothing else matters." The shadows of the palace seemed to lean in closer, but Selene didn’t feel small anymore. Not weak. Not powerless. With Orion’s hand on hers, the connection between them, and her wolf ready, she felt… unstoppable.
