“Mommy?”
“Yes Baby.”
“Where’s Daddy?”
“He’ll be back any minute. He had to help his friend with something.”
“Ok.”
“Why don’t you help me find the rest of the decorations so we can finish and surprise Daddy?”
“Ok.”
“There should be a red box in the basement. Can you get it for me?”
“Ok Mommy.”
“Baby! We’re going to play hide-and-seek, but there is one special rule where no one can talk or make any noise, ok?”
“Ok Mommy.”
“Since you are in the basement, you can probably find a really good hiding spot down there, so I am going to count to 100 and you got to be really, really quiet and hide and you don’t come out until I find you, ok?”
“Mommy this sounds like a hard game. I don’t want to play without Daddy.”
“Don’t worry Baby. This is like a practice game before Daddy gets home so that you can beat him.”
“Ok Mommy.”
“Ok then. The game starts now, ok? Just remember the rules.”
The house went silent. Foot steps could be heard roaming the house. A loud banging echoed throughout the silent home. The door squeaked as heavy marching was heard exploring the house. Someone yelled from faraway and the marching feet followed the direction of the yell.
The house went silent. Nothing moved in the house. Nothing was heard for such a long time. Glass broke the silence as it shattered above.
The house went silent. Nothing moved. Time went by and there was no change. The room felt hotter and hotter as time went on.
A fire burned above, and the child trapped in the basement stayed quiet. No rules were broken.
The fire roared and consumed everything in it. It’s flamed reached great lengths and the smoked filled the air.
What do we do? We need to get out.
How?
The door. Push it open…. NO!
