  Redwood. The houses here were made of redwood, which was famous for its rich oil and fragrance. The fire set by the escaped prisoners this morning took the whole town half a day to put out. But more than half the houses were destroyed. As night fell, there was rubble and smoke everywhere. Embers flickered in billows of smoke, and occasionally roused from their smoldering state by the wind, leading to cries and frantic efforts to put out the fires. What should have been a quiet night was filled with commotion, and people groaned in pain in the darkness. The chaos of this morning's escape spread to all the cells in town.
