“Lizzy’s having trouble with the baby and she asked me to get Sam from school today. She forgot Kylie was coming over too, but she said you had to work and I didn’t want to leave Kylie at school. I hope it’s okay that she came here with me. I mean, I know I’m not Lizzy and I’m not a mom, but I spend a lot of time with Sam so I’m not totally unexperienced with kids,” Cat rambled.
“Is Lizzy okay?” Ryder asked, his face full of concern.
“Honestly, I’m not really sure,” Cat said. She glanced toward the pool to make sure Sam wasn’t listening. Ryder saw the look on her face and switched the pizzas to his left hand. He grasped Cat’s elbow and gently led her into the kitchen. Ryder set the pizzas down on the island and faced Cat. He saw tears glisten in her eyes and knew she was scared.
