Cat stepped onto the back patio and squinted against the bright sun. She dropped her sunglasses over her eyes and headed to a chair near the pool. “Hi girls,” she called as she approached Sam and Kylie in the pool.
“Cat!” Kylie screamed. She jumped out of the pool and went running over to Cat. She wrapped Cat in a bear hug, not wanting to let go. “I missed you.”
Cat’s heart broke just a little more hearing Kylie’s honesty. “I’ve missed you, too, Kylie.”
“When are you going to come over again? My dad said you’ve been busy and couldn’t come see us.”
“He’s right. I’ve been busy,” Cat said, adding ‘Your dad is a jerk, too’ in her head.
“Well, you’re here now, so that’s good. Are you going to go swimming with us?”
“Not today, sweetie. Maybe next time.”
