Ava's POV
It had been six months since I left Daniel. Six months since I last heard his voice, saw his name flash across my phone, or felt the weight of his lies pressing down on my chest.
I got a new apartment, a new job, and even started dating again—nothing serious, just enough to remind myself that love wasn’t supposed to feel like drowning. It felt good but on a quiet Saturday morning, as I stood in line at my favorite coffee shop, I heard his voice behind me, threatening to ruin all that I've worked for
"Ava." I froze momentarily before slowly turning around.
Daniel looked different. Not bad, just tired. Older. Like the weight of his choices had finally settled on his shoulders.
"Hey," he said, giving me a small smile. "Can we talk?"
I studied him for a moment before collecting my coffee and stepping aside. "Go ahead."
He hesitated. "Not here."
"Here is fine." I said firmly and he sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I just wanted to say I’m sorry."
I arched an eyebrow. "For what, exactly?"
His Adam’s apple bobbed. "For everything."
I nodded, taking a slow sip of my coffee. "Okay."
His brows furrowed. "That’s it?"
"What else do you want me to say?" I tilted my head. "That I forgive you? That I miss you? That I wish things had been different?"
His lips parted, but no words came out.
I let out a soft chuckle. "You know, for years, I thought if you ever apologized, it would change something. That maybe, just maybe, it would make all the pain worth it."
"And now?"
I shrugged. "Now, I don’t care."
His face fell and I felt something in me shift slightly,
"Did Sophia leave?" I asked, my voice light.
His silence was my answer.
I smiled. "She finally listened, huh?"
"Ava please"
I reached out, squeezing his arm gently. "I hope you heal, Daniel. I really do."
Then I walked out of the coffee shop without looking back and that was the last time I saw him in years.
The years passed by but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing from my life. I had moved on or at least, that’s what I told herself. Work kept me busy, and I had thrown myself into new routines, trying to forget Daniel totally.
Then, one evening, while I sat on my couch scrolling mindlessly through my phone, a notification popped up.
New message request: Daniel.
My heart stopped and with shaky hands, I tapped the notification.
Daniel: I need to see you. I know I don’t deserve a response, but if you’ll let me explain please. I’m in town.
I stared at the message, my breath coming in short gasps. After all this time, he had the nerve to just reappear like this? I wanted to ignore and block him but I somehow found myself typing back
Ava: Why?
Three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Then appeared again.
Daniel: Meet me tomorrow at your favorite Cafe. 7 PM. If you don’t come, I’ll understand.
I closed her eyes. The café where we had met for the first time and the last time. I really should ignore him but I knew that I couldn't. I missed him and still wanted him in a way, talk about trauma responses.
~~~~~
The next evening, I found myself standing outside the café, my fingers curled into fists at my sides. I had promised myself I wouldn’t come the night before but yet here I was. Through the glass window, I spotted him immediately. He sat at our usual table, his hands wrapped around a cup of coffee, his gaze fixed on the entrance as if he knew I would come. He looked the same yet different. The Daniel I had known was always confident, always sure of himself. This man looked tired and sad?
I took one long deep breath and pushed the door open and he stood up as I approached, but I ignored the gesture and slid into the seat across from him. “Talk,” I said, folding my arms.
He exhaled sharply. “I messed up.”
“No kidding but I've heard this before so what's different now?" I asked and he sighed
“I didn’t mean to leave you for Sophia like that.” His voice was quiet, but there was urgency in it. “I had to.”
I scoffed “Had to?” I repeated. “Daniel, you left me for another woman while I was pregnant with your child. Do you have any idea what that felt like?”
He ran a hand through his hair. “I do. And I hate myself for it.” He looked at me, really looked at me and there was something raw in his eyes. “But I swear to you, Sarah, if I had stayed, I would’ve put you in danger.”
I frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Daniel hesitated, then leaned forward. “The night before Sophia posted that, I was supposed to meet you, I got a call. From my brother.”
My stomach twisted. I had never met Daniel’s brother, but I knew their relationship was complicated. “What happened?”
“He was in trouble. The kind you don’t walk away from.” Daniel exhaled. “I had to come to his aid and if I had told you anything, you could’ve gotten caught up in it too.”
I stared at him in confusion. What was he talking about or just another excuse?
"What are you in about?"
"Yes Sophia was pregnant but she was pregnant for my brother and not me" he said and the shock from what he just said did let me speak so he continued
"And when Sophia lost the baby which my brother beat out of her, I wanted to come back to you and explain everything but I couldn’t risk it.” He swallowed hard. “And by the time I could, I thought maybe you were better off without me.”
I looked away, trying to process everything. A part of me still finding it hard to believe all that he was saying and l wanted to scream at him, to tell him that no excuse was good enough for the way he had disappeared. But another part of me that had never stopped missing him ached at the pain in his voice.
“If what you're saying is true then why come back at all?” I asked and he reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. He slid it across the table without saying a word and I hesitated before picking it up and unfolded it, my breath catching.
It was a photograph. A grainy, black-and-white image. A security camera still of me taken just last week.
I looked up, my heart pounding. “What is this?”
Daniel’s expression was grim. “Someone’s been watching you, Sarah.”
My blood turned to ice.
“I came back,” he looked around, lowering his voice “because you’re in danger.”
