THE PHONE CALL

CHAPTER #3 “THE PHONE CALL” EVAN’S POV: By the time I was able to get the tire changed and drive out of the Freeland, it was nearly dawn. The only thing that I knew for sure was that I needed to get away from West Virginia as quickly as possible. I drove through the mountains and soon found myself traveling into the farmlands of Pennsylvania. I was beginning to stress, the problem was I was an Alpha with no pack, no allies, a kidnapped female that happened to be kin to the King, and the last five hundred dollars I had in cash I had given to that bloodsucking vampire. I had no access to any additional funds until I got my hands on a computer. To add to all this, I didn’t even have a phone with me. I needed to figure something out and soon. Then, from the floorboards of the passenger seat I heard a soft buzzing, and I felt my pulse quicken. It was a phone! Thank the Moon Goddess! Now I just needed a place to pull over so I could grab it, and that’s when I noted the full-service travel plaza for Allentown just ahead. I stomped on the accelerator and quickly pulled in, veering into one of the first parking spots I could find. I glanced back at Meredith, who was still passed out. Hurriedly, I leaned over the center counsel to get the small I-phone that was lying under the passenger seat. After a few moments of fumbling, I was able to grasp the device. Thankfully, those stupid kids had not password protected the thing. I opened the screen and saw a text message that read “Mom”, asking, “Where are you?”, and I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Good luck old woman.” I sneered aloud. I knew damn well that they would never find the bodies of those kids after that vampire had gotten his hands on them. I shivered to myself in the seat, those nasty demons, vampires really were the scourge of the earth. They were the reason most humans went missing in the Freeland, and why the Freeland had the reputation it did. I sat in silence for a moment trying to think of my options. I needed to get out of here, I needed to be as far away from West Virginia as I could get. I felt a pang of pain in my forehead and pinched the bridge of my nose and crinkled my upper lip. What options did I have? I held the phone in my hand tightly as I strained to think of different scenarios, I had available. I thought of Monsieur Montague, and how he had lectured me about taking the Lycan princess to begin with. “What would ever settle into your head to steal the Lycan Princess, especially one already marked and mated? You are, what do they say, eh… stupid.” He muttered, his tone very callous, and highly cautious. “I want the throne. She’s the only way I can get it.” I grumbled. “You’re a fool…” those words raced around in my mind over and over again. He had been so brutal, although I knew in my heart, he had probably been right. I have even cussed myself out for listening to my father. I should have killed the old man myself and been done with it after he killed my mother, our beloved Luna. But the sick old man had me convinced that she was disloyal and had cheated on him, and I was foolish enough to believe that. My mother was a great woman and a wonderful Luna. I could feel myself getting angry all over again, so I stole another glance of the angel sleeping soundly in the back seat and immediately I began to feel better. She had the same calming effect that Emily had. I wasn’t sure why, but her mere presence made me feel like the man I had been before Katie, my fated mate who had died during childbirth. I paused for a moment, lifted the phone up and opened the screen. Of course, Montague, that old wizard was crazy enough to help us, and powerful enough not to be harassed or bothered by the Alpha King as he was not a wolf. If I could get him to agree, he was bound to be our best bet. I had to sit for a moment and think, I knew his number but because of technology, remembering numbers wasn’t something anyone needed to do anymore. However luckily for me, I had nearly a photographic memory and after a few attempts of dialing the number on the screen, I successfully recognized his number and pressed the send button. It rang only twice, and I heard the gruff voice of the wizard come over the airwaves. “Ah, bonsoir, I was sure you would have been dead by now.” He chuckled to himself, and instantly I felt my face flame. What was I doing calling this asshole? I hated him nearly as much as I hated my father. I swallowed my anger and clamped my eyes shut before I responded. “I need your help. I am trying to get out of West Virginia. It’s not safe for me here.” This time I heard a roar of laughter and a snort. “Non Merde! There is no place in the world where you will be safe from the Alpha King.” I facepalmed my forehead and took an exaggerated breath. “After speaking with you, I realized you were right, and I abandoned the princess. No point in dealing with a pregnant woman anyhow. She had no value to me after all hindsight.” I offered the old wizard, recognizing my insolence to him, and reaching forth with an olive branch. I cleared my throat before I continued. “But I may or may not have gotten my hands on Meredith, the cousin.” There was a deep silence over the phone and for a moment, I thought the call had been disconnected. “And what exactly do you intend to do with her.” I heard a very distinctive growl, like he was angry, more like furious than he had been prior. I was taken aback by his vicious tone and paused before continuing. “I intend to do everything I had wanted to do with the Lycan Princess, except this time, I will be making the most powerful hybrids the world has ever seen. I want to amass an army with her at my side, regain a pack, and eventually overthrow that f*****g Alpha King. That, is my ultimate goal.” My voice was stern and confident, unlike how I really felt. More anxious and unsure if I had to be honest. However, I knew If I didn’t get some sort of help from this old fool, I was as good as dead once the Alpha King got a hold of me. “And you have the girl now? Where are you?” All humor had ceased within his voice, he was all business at this point. “Yes, and I already marked her. She is mine forever. We are in Allentown Pennsylvania.” I heard a grunt on the other end of the line. “How far is that from New York city?” His question hinted some anxiety, but why was Montague behaving this way. He almost seemed frantic with his questions. “Just outside of two hours, why?” Something was amiss, but I wasn’t able to conclude as to why. “Get your ass to JFK. I have access to a jet there. I will make all the arrangements, just get your worthless hide over here.” The call ended abruptly, and I had to admit, even I was slightly disturbed by his reaction to my snatching Meredith. But it didn’t matter, because she was mine now and there was nothing anyone could do to change that. I stared at the phone in my hand then callously tossed it into the passenger seat. I glanced back at my newest conquest and smiled as I put the car into drive and began our journey to a new life. Luckily for us, the traffic was better than ordinary on this brisk morning, and I was able to make excellent time to New York City. I could see the skyline on the horizon just over the trees as we neared the city. I knew that time was not on our side. Undoubtably the family members of the teens would soon be looking for them if they hadn’t begun already. I needed to ditch this stolen car and this phone soon before the cops caught sight of us and began asking questions. Not to mention the fact I had a woman unconscious and drugged in my car. The human cops could ruin everything as easily as the wolfen community. I drove as cautiously as I could into New York City and every time I saw a cop, I felt my anxiety increase. I weaved in and out of traffic until I successfully made it to the famed Central Park. I quickly chose a parking spot at the end of the row, as far back from the hustle and bustle as I could get. I then reached over and grabbed the small I-phone and redialed Montague’s number. It only rang once, and the gruff voice of Montague echoed through the phone. “Did you make it to the city?” he growled, causing my nerves to flinch. It reminded me of being scolded when I was a child. I frowned bitterly with distaste. “I am at the Central Park.” I answered. “Good, stay where you are. I will have a couple of men drive over and pick you up.” I heard some rustling, like a hand going over the speaker of the phone, then I heard a muffled shout. “Ramon, call Ralph and tell him to pick them up at the Central Park main parking area.” “What are you driving?” he barked back into the phone. Causing my attention to bounce back to Montague. “Ahh, a Jeep, it’s red.” I heard a snort from the other end of the line. “Look for a red jeep.” He barked orders, again muffling the phone, then returned to me once again. “Couldn’t find a less conspicuous auto?” he sneered. I face palmed my face, then ran my hand into my thick blonde hair. Maybe this wasn’t such a great idea. I thought to myself. It was like re-living life with my father all over again. Of course, this was my father’s friend, so I guess this was all to be expected. “At 3am in the middle of a werewolf war, it was the best I could do, or find for that matter.” I sighed before I continued. “So, tell me what the plan is.” I said, my voice strained with anxiety and fatigue. “I am having Ralph, my New York associate, come and pick you and the mademoiselle up. From there, they will take you to LaGuardia, and Ralph’s pilot Vinnie will bring you here. I have a small airstrip here on the property, so you will fly directly here.” “What about this jeep and the phone? Do you want me to discard them?” I needed to make sure to cover my bases. If the phone was found, and they were able to track the calls I made, they would know Montague was somehow involved and could potentially find us. “Mon Fils, Ralph will take care of everything. No need to worry. He is the son of my old friend Carlo Sabello,” the old Frenchman replied with a slight chuckle. I froze in my seat as I had newspaper scenes flash into my mind. “Like the Sabello crime boss?” I asked hesitantly. This time Montague scoffed at me. “I suppose you could say that. But don’t worry, they will take care of everything.” I sighed; I was in too deep. I had already marked the girl, I had no pack, no future, and if the Lycan King found me, I was as good as dead. “So why are you agreeing to help me?” I asked, unsure if I should even ask this question, however my mind was rampant, my anxiety was surging, and I felt at this point I had nothing to lose. There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before the old man finally responded to me. “Your vision is a good one. The possible power that this woman can bring you as well as me is boundless. Being related to the Lycan royals is simply icing, the real power is within her, within her witch’s bloodline.” He began. He had told me many things about the Lycan royals, yet I knew very little about Meredith. What was so spectacular about her? I had simply taken her because she was related to the royals, beautiful, and easy access, and I wasn’t about to leave without something. “Like the Lycan Princess, Meredith is also a granddaughter of the Celtic witch Aoibhe. Aoibhe had two daughters, Queen Katherine, who is half Lycan and half witch, but also Siobhan. Story goes that some English rivals learned the location of witches’ family and they, along with some Scott allies went into local towns casting spells and causing chaos because Siobhan’s mate had been challenging the witch’s council. At the time, the head of the council, Erebus, wanted Siobhan for himself but she had refused him. Between the rejection and the trouble Siobhan’s mate Brendan had caused for Erebus, he sought to have the family destroyed. Their home was surrounded by an angry mob and Siobhan and Brendan were burned at the stake. Their young daughter, Meredith, had not been in the home, she had been with the Alpha King. Rumor has it, Aoibhe had found her daughter and son in law’s charred bodies still on the stakes. It was soon after that that Aoibhe and her family took a home inside of the Lycan King’s pack grounds.” I heard a deep sigh on the other end of the line before Montague continued speaking. “So, what makes this family so powerful anyway other than they are aligned with the Lycan King?” I asked, not entirely sure why this particular family was so important. “Aoibhe can master both dark and light magic, she can control demons and souls with no consequence to her being. Witches are rarely able to master the dark arts, and most that do go insane. One must be very careful with the power of the devil. It is rumored that Siobhan could also control this magic, as well as her daughter Meredith.” I leaned back into the seat of the Jeep as I noticed a black Mercedes pulling up beside me and recognized Ralph Sabello stepping out of the car, dressed in a rich black suit with dark shades over his eyes. “I think my ride is here.” I muttered as I nodded to the mobster now standing beside my door. “Okay, allow Ralph to take care of everything, just get on that plane and get here as soon as possible before that girl wakes. If she gets her senses about her, she will kill you without a second thought.” I was warned as Montague hung up the phone. I frowned as I opened the door and shook the mobster’s hand. “Let’s get you outta here.” He smiled wickedly as he gripped my hand, and I instantly knew in this moment, that my life was never going to be the same ever again.
