Mae’s POV
“Mr Chance Wildermore, you are free of all charges.”
My eyes watered as I saw the cuffs taken out of my father’s hands. My bag slipped off my shoulder as I raced to him, crashing into his arm as I sobbed.
The stale smell of his clothes only made me feel worse. My dad had always been by my side, he raised me since mum died in an accident when I was just five. He made sure I didn’t feel the absence of my mother.
When puberty came knocking, he was the one there. The relationship we shared was beyond ordinary, it broke me when he lost all he had and was locked up in prison. How it all happened seemed too fishy to be ordinary.
But, I don’t want more trouble, I will take my dad and we will leave. “Mae, my princess,” he called out of shock. I knew he never thought he would get out of this alive.
I tightened the hug. “Dad, it’s over now… It’s all over.”
“How did you…”
I pulled away from the hug and locked eyes with him. “I will explain it all, but not now, we have to go, so far away now… Dad.”
He was a bit skeptical while I pulled him out of the police station.

“Miss Mae Wildermore… you’re pregnant.”
I felt my world tilting as Lucian’s face popped up in my mind. “Be my wife, Mae,” his words came crashing on me as a wave.
I held the doctor’s desk as I tried to gain balance. “Are you okay, Miss?” The doctor asked as he jolted up from his seat.
“I’m fine…” I took the result as I staggered out of the office, breathing sharply, as I entered the bathroom.
I slammed the door shut, my chest heaving as tears dripped down my cheeks. “I’m pre… pregnant,” I covered my mouth as I sobbed into it.
I thought the chapter between me and Lucian was over, but I was carrying a secret in me all this while. It’s been three months, living without him after being wrapped around his finger for three years was torture.
I had started a business, using the left out money from selling the diamond ring, but I felt sick and came for a check up. The doctor asked me to do a pregnancy test, I found it awkward, but I agreed.
“This child…” I smiled amidst tears. “Is a gift from Lucian… thank you… I will remember you forever now.” I ran my hand over my belly and I trailed up, took the locket on my neck. My chest was heaving when I opened it and saw the picture of Lucian and I, on one side, and then a picture of the diamond ring on the other.
I kissed both. “I missed you so much that the heavens sent me a gift. It will be named after you, Lilian if she’s a girl and Fabian, if he is a boy.”
A knock made me wash my face quickly. I opened the door and saw Elodie, his sea blue eyes looking down at me in worry, he had come with me to the hospital, he probably guessed I was in here when he wanted and didn’t see me coming out.
I met him when I went to a law firm to register my business, M and L Fashion House. He slowly became a close friend, but I never told him about my past.
Elodie opened his large hands and offered me a hug, without asking any question. I really appreciated that. I whimpered as I held him tight.

“Fabian… hurry up, I’ll be late for the office,” I called as I got up from the sofa, closing my laptop, before stuffing it and a few files in my bag.
“Let me handle that,” Elodie said as he reached and carried my bag.
I grinned. “Thanks darling.” I said to him, even though it was his job as my PA. Five years ago when M&L Fashion House started to boom, Elodie offered to be my PA. He has been a great help to me, till date.
I looked around my large sitting room and I saw Ravindra, my Indian cook, approaching me with Fabian’s lunch box in her hand. “Here, madame”
I rolled my eyes as I took it. “It’s Mae, Ravindra,” I scoffed at her. “You are old enough to be my mother, you know?”
“But, I am not, Madame Mae,” Ravindra replied with a smile, I reciprocated. Her smile reminded me of a mother’s warmth.
“Where’s dad?” I asked, looking upstairs, “Still sleeping?”
“No… he had a few english classes, he woke up quite early to attend them.”
Dad had become an English tutor to foreign kids. I told him he doesn’t have to work, but he doesn’t like being idle.
“Mama…”
I turned to see six year old Fabian walking down the stairs sluggishly. I furrowed my brows when I noticed he didn’t have his school uniform on. Does he want me to be late for work, because I want to drop him off in school?
I raised my head and saw his Nanny walking behind him. I frowned at her. “Blair, why is he not dressed yet?”
“Madam, He…”
“Enough, I can speak for myself” he groaned as he raised his hand and made Blair quiet. She pressed her lips into a thin line and shrugged at me.
I watched Fabian stride up to me and I gulped, he took after Lucian, his walk, his face, his character… everything. My heart quakes when I see him and I see his father in him, it makes the guilt of hiding him from his father claw at me.
Fabian stood astride in front of me as he crossed his hands over his chest, wearing a smug look. “I am not going to school today.”
My jaw dropped. What is he saying? “Fab…”
He dropped his hands limply by his side as he groaned, “I am not feeling well, mum.”
I clicked my tongue as I made out to grab his ears. How dare he lie to skip school, then he looked up at me with those hazel brown eyes he took from his father, and it clicked.
Lucian doesn’t lie… Fabian also had never lied to me.
I squatted in front of him as I cupped his face. His temperature was a bit warm. “Are you having a headache?”
He pouted and nodded. I turned and looked at Elodie. “Would you be able to manage the office alone today?”
Ravindra stepped up as Elodie was about to nod. “Don’t skip work, Madame Mae… I am sure Blair can take care of him, I am also here.”
“Yes, mama… Aunt is right,” Fabian said, giving me a cute smile.
I ruffled his hair as I got up. “That’s fine, Blair and Otto will take you to the hospital in my car okay? I will take the other car.” I knew how much he loved my blue sports car, that was his father’s favourite colour too.
I faced Elodie, and nodded at him. We were leaving when Fabian called out to me. “Mama.”
I paused and turned to him. “If Papa was here, he would have taken me to the hospital, right?”
I froze as I blinked at him. He looked so cute, I couldn't hurt him any more.
“Soon, Baby… your father will return.” I lied again. I had told him his father lived in another part of the world.
