Chapter 20Flora hoisted Carter up and dragged him by one arm. His body painfully thumped along stairs as she ascended them. A heavy door opened. They passed through it and the rush of night air greeted them. They were on the flat rooftop of the fire station. She dragged him to the center and stopped. Carter tried to pull himself up, but his fatigue allowed him only to rest on his knees. Flora gripped his shirt tightly to hold him there while she gazed up into the night sky.
