Chapter 8Mondo presented the hulking apparatus as if it were the grand prize on a game show. That is, if the game show was hosted on a scrap heap. It was a twisted pillar of electrical components, a Frankenstein’s monster of technological hardware that had been dismantled and reassembled into one combined unit. Exposed circuit boards and blinking lights were affixed throughout the analog leviathan, combined with a network of wires that gave the machine an appearance of its own nervous system. There were buttons and knobs, switches and screens, panels and meters. All the individual parts formed a contorted helix that rose from floor to ceiling in a cyber Solomonic column.
