The one who was already inside

1102 Words
Xinyue couldn’t breathe. Her body refused to move. The person standing in her room looked calm—too calm—like they had every right to be there. Like they had always been there. “Finally…” the person repeated softly, smiling. “We meet properly, Lin Xinyue.” Xinyue’s voice barely came out. “…Who are you?” The stranger tilted their head slightly. Tall. Neatly dressed in a dark uniform she didn’t recognize. Not Echelon Academy’s. Not Lin family staff either. Then they stepped closer. And Xinyue instinctively backed up. “Relax,” the person said. “If I wanted to hurt you, I wouldn’t have waited this long.” That sentence made everything worse. Xinyue’s hand slowly reached behind her, searching for anything—phone, object, escape. The stranger noticed. And smiled faintly. “You’re braver than I expected,” he said. He. So it was a man. Xinyue swallowed hard. “How did you get in here?” He glanced casually toward the balcony. “Same way I’ve been watching you for weeks.” Her blood ran cold. “Watching me…?” He nodded. “From here. From school. From places you never noticed.” Xinyue’s heart pounded violently. The camera. The messages. The photos. All of it. Her voice shook. “You’re the one who installed the device.” A pause. Then he nodded again. “Yes.” Simple. Like it meant nothing. Xinyue’s mind couldn’t keep up. “Why?” she whispered. “Why me?” The stranger studied her for a long moment. Then stepped closer again. This time, she didn’t move. “Because,” he said quietly, “you’re not supposed to exist in that house.” Xinyue frowned. “What are you talking about?” He reached into his pocket. Pulled out a folded document. And placed it on her desk. Xinyue hesitated before looking. Her hands trembled as she unfolded it. Birth records. Names. Dates. Her eyes scanned quickly— Then froze. Her breathing stopped completely. “No…” she whispered. Because there it was. A second record. Another child registered under her father’s name. Same birth year. Same hospital. But a different name. A name she had never seen before. The stranger spoke quietly. “You were never the only daughter of Lin Zhenghao.” At the same time, downstairs, Lin Yuxin stood in front of her phone. A single message on the screen. “He’s inside her room.” Yuxin didn’t move at first. Then she smiled. Not kindly. Not softly. But satisfied. “So he finally showed himself,” she whispered. Behind her, Su Meilin entered. “Yuxin,” she said sharply. “What did you do this time?” Yuxin turned slowly. “I didn’t do anything.” A pause. Then she added: “Someone else is revealing the truth for me.” Su Meilin’s expression darkened instantly. “You told him where she lives?” Yuxin shrugged slightly. “He was going to find her anyway.” A long silence. Then Su Meilin said quietly: “If this escalates… the Lin family will collapse.” Yuxin’s eyes didn’t flinch. “Good.” Xinyue stepped back from the document like it burned her. “This is fake,” she said quickly. “It has to be.” The stranger shook his head. “It’s not.” He watched her carefully. “Your father never told you the truth because it would destroy everything.” Xinyue’s throat tightened. “My mother…” she whispered. The stranger hesitated slightly. Then said: “Your mother knew.” That hit harder than anything else. Xinyue’s voice cracked. “Stop…” But he continued anyway. “She didn’t die from illness alone.” Silence. The room felt colder instantly. Xinyue stared at him. “…What did you just say?” The stranger’s expression turned serious for the first time. “She was silenced because she tried to take you away.” Xinyue’s legs weakened. She grabbed the edge of her desk. “No,” she whispered again. “That’s not true.” The stranger stepped closer slowly. “Then explain why someone has been watching you since childhood.” Xinyue froze. “How do you—” “I told you,” he interrupted. “I’ve been watching too.” A pause. Then softly: “Because you’re not the only one searching for answers.” A sudden vibration came from Xinyue’s phone. She flinched. Unknown number. One message: “Don’t believe him.” Her breath hitched. Then another message immediately followed. “He is not your enemy… but he is not your savior either.” Xinyue looked up sharply. The stranger was still there. Still calm. Still watching her reaction. And for the first time— She realized something terrifying. He already knew about the messages. Outside the mansion gate, a car screeched to a stop. The door opened. Gu Yexian stepped out. His expression was different tonight. Colder. Sharper. He didn’t walk. He moved fast. Inside the mansion, alarms weren’t ringing—but something else was. Instinct. Danger. He reached Xinyue’s floor. Stopped at the door. It was unlocked. His eyes darkened. Then— He pushed it Inside the room— Xinyue stood frozen. The stranger stood between her and the door. And the documents were still on the desk. Gu Yexian’s eyes scanned everything in one second. Then landed on the stranger. Silence. Heavy. Explosive. The stranger smiled slightly. “Oh,” he said softly. “You came faster than expected.” Gu Yexian didn’t respond immediately. His voice came out low. “Step away from her.” The stranger tilted his head. “Or what?” A pause. Then— Gu Yexian stepped forward. And the entire atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. Danger became real. Not implied. Real. Xinyue stood between both of them, breathing unevenly. And for the first time— She realized this wasn’t just a secret anymore. It was a war. The stranger looked at Xinyue one last time. Then said softly: “You have five minutes before they decide your entire fate.” He stepped back toward the window. Gu Yexian moved instantly— But the stranger was already gone. Only the open window remained. And the cold wind blowing through it. On the desk… the document still lay open. And Xinyue finally read the last line she hadn’t noticed before: “True heir of the Lin bloodline: Lin Xinyue (birth identity classified).” Her world collapsed in silence. And behind her— Gu Yexian said quietly: “So you found out… too late.”
