Chapter Four
Three months later
Eliza finally dragged herself out of the house to do some much-needed shopping. They were running low on groceries and cleaning supplies, so Eliza compiled a list and set out to the city, since prices would be lower on most of it.
She didn’t really feel comfortable going alone but everyone else had things going on and couldn’t make it. So she told Melissa that she would have her phone on at all times just in case.

As she roamed down the aisles of the grocery store, she kept looking behind her. The hairs on the back of her neck were standing straight up and she was getting chills running up and down her spine. She felt like someone was watching her... following her. But every time she turned around, there would be nobody there or it would just be some other shopper who had come around the corner.
Eliza shook her head. It was probably just the hormones that were making her paranoid. She continued on through the store but could not shake the feeling that she was being watched. She went through the check out and headed for the car. Once she was there, she dialed Melissa’s number and waited for her to pick up.
“Eliza, is everything okay?” Melissa finally answered.
“Yeah, everything is okay. I just keep getting this really weird feeling that I’m being watched.” Eliza looked around the outside of the car and then locked the doors.
“Well, is there anyone following you?” Melissa asked, as if it was a normal occurrence.
“No, I don’t think so. I mean it’s not like every time I turn around I see the same person, or I see the same face in a crowd or anything like that. Everything seems normal except that I just can’t shake this feeling.” Eliza rubbed her temples.
“It’s probably just your nerves. How have you been sleeping? Lack of sleep can sometimes cause paranoia.” Melissa was shuffling through some papers.
“Yeah, I tried to chalk it up to hormones. You’re probably right. I haven’t really been sleeping very well. I’ve still been having those weird dreams. Come to think of it, it’s probably the dreams that are freaking me out since my dreams are from the view of someone spying on me.” Eliza chuckled at herself for being so naïve.
“See, nothing to worry about. But I’m here if you need me. Oh, can you pick me up a couple of snack wraps from McDonalds?” Melissa blurted excitedly.
“Yeah, I can probably manage that,” Eliza laughed. “Okay, I’ll talk to you later. Bye.”
“See ya later!” Melissa clicked off her phone.
Eliza set her phone down on the seat beside her and let out a long sigh. She couldn’t believe she was so paranoid. She laughed again and shook her head as she pulled out of the parking lot to head over to McDonalds.
She was so exhausted. She felt like she had been on her feet all day and they were starting to ache. Must be the pregnancy because she never had a problem with shopping all day before.
She carefully went through her shopping list one more time to make sure that she didn’t forget anything while she waited in the McDonalds drive-through. She got her order and hit the road.
She cranked up the radio and started singing at the top of her lungs. Other than her feet aching, she was in a very good mood. She had gotten everything on the shopping list and nothing bad had happened, and she would make it home just in time to start dinner for Hayden.
Eliza grabbed her phone and quickly sent a text to Melissa, letting her know that she was on her way back to Birkbridge. She tossed her phone back on the passenger seat and started singing again.
All of a sudden, a crazy driver in a Volvo passed her and cut her off, causing her to swerve so he wouldn’t hit the front of her car.
“Jackass!” Eliza screamed at the car in front of her. Swerving had caused her phone to slide off the seat on to the floor of the car. She was going to try and reach for it but she decided it was probably safer to just leave it until she got home. She shouldn’t be texting and driving anyway and if anyone called, she could answer it through the car’s Bluetooth.
She was jamming along to a nice upbeat song on the radio when she thought she heard her phone go off. She instinctively looked over to the passenger seat just out of habit. And when she looked up, she saw a wolf right there in the middle of the road. She slammed on the brakes, but instead of running, the wolf lunged at the car.
Eliza put her hands up and squeezed her eyes shut but nothing happened. She carefully opened her eyes. She was still in the McDonalds drive-through and there were people honking their car horns impatiently behind her. She quickly put her car into drive and pulled up to a parking spot.
She rubbed her eyes and shook her head. What the hell just happened? She looked to the passenger seat where her phone and the food order were sitting. Did I seriously just fall asleep in the drive through? Eliza dialed Melissa’s number and bit her lip as she waited.
“Hello,” Melissa answered with a yawn.
“Melissa, something weird just happened!” Eliza exclaimed.
“What’s wrong?” Melissa asked worriedly.
“So I was going through the drive-through at McDonalds and I must have fallen asleep, ‘cause I had this weird dream. It felt so real. I was on my way home and some asshole cut me off and then my phone went off, so I looked over to see who it was. When I looked up, there was a wolf in the middle of the road and it attacked the car. But then I woke up and I was still in the drive-through.” The whole thing didn’t sound any less weird when she said it out loud.
“Are you okay? That’s scary,” Melissa said.
“Yeah, I think so. I’m just a little shaken up,” Eliza sighed into the phone.
“Do you need someone to come get you?” She could hear Melissa grab her keys.
“No, I think I’ll be fine. Are you too busy to stay on the phone with me until I get back?” Eliza asked as she put the car in reverse.
“No, I can stay on the line with you, it’s no problem,” Melissa sounded tired.
Eliza made her way out of the city and chatted with Melissa all the way home.

That night Eliza waited for Hayden to get home from work. She had put away all the things she bought and had dinner waiting for him in the oven. She felt so rundown.
She heard Hayden’s keys in the door and rushed to meet him. The second he was through the door, she threw her arms around him and burst into tears.
“Eliza? What’s the matter?” He cupped her face in his hands and searched her eyes.
She explained the day’s events to him as he hung up his keys and kicked off his boots before he wrapped her in a comforting hug.
“That is pretty odd. Do you think it’s just the changes your body is going through from the pregnancy?” Hayden asked quietly as he stroked her hair.
“I don’t know. At first, that’s what I thought but then that dream in the drive-through was just too much. The worst part is that I don’t know if this is normal. Maybe because our baby is half-wolf, I’m supposed to be having these weird feelings.” Eliza had stopped crying and was just letting Hayden hold her tight.
“I will talk to Theo tomorrow. Maybe we can find someone for you to talk to. Another human who was pregnant with a wolf’s child. Then you can talk to her and hopefully get some answers.” He released her and tucked her hair behind her ears.
“That’s a great idea.” Eliza smiled and wiped the remaining tears from her cheeks. “You really are amazing.”
“Oh, I know.” He chuckled and gave her a hard kiss on the lips. “Dinner smells delicious. I’ll get cleaned up and then we can dig in.”
“Okay sounds good.” Eliza wandered over to the table and sat down in one of the chairs.
She knew there was a reason she was so in love with him. He always knew just what to say to make her feel better. She really hoped that Theo would be able to find someone for her to talk to. She had so many questions. Not only had she never been pregnant before, but she had no idea if this pregnancy was going to be a normal one, considering the circumstances. She just really wanted some answers and she was sure that if they could find this other woman that all of her worries would be put to rest.
