They got to the restaurant and ordered their food. They ate in silence. Ryan sat across from her . He didn’t stare, but every now and then, his eyes lifted briefly, as if he checking in on her without meaning to. She wasn’t speaking or complaining. She was just quiet. Had he offended her? The thought crept in against his will. He dismissed it almost immediately. He hadn’t said anything wrong. He had only answered her question plainly. That should have been enough. And even if he had offended her… why should it bother him? It shouldn’t. Still, his jaw tightened slightly as he took another bite of his food, forcing his attention elsewhere.
