Chapter 9

Riley “Please, stay with me, don’t go.” I begged him and he turned to me, his gaze held mine and for a moment I believed he would stay, but Carl slowly held my hand and pulled it away from his. “Go to bed Riley, I will be right back.” He didn’t spare me another glance before leaving the house. I stood there frozen, staring at the shut door. Was I wrong to have feelings for my father’s best friend? Was it wrong that I couldn’t control my emotions? I can’t keep this feelings locked inside of my heart anymore, not after I had kept it hidden for years. If it were possible, then I would also want to get rid of it, but it wasn’t easy, it wasn’t easy to get rid of the feeling. We don’t chose who we fall in love with, we can’t control it, and staying this close to Carl, it was making me go crazy. I blinked out of the daze and rushed out of the house to the porch, but his car was gone, he had driven off, it was this late and he had gone to her. I squatted, burying my face into my arms as I sobbed. When would he come back? When would he return? How many minutes? How many hours will it take? I sniffled, ignoring the cold, I decided to wait for him, I would stay out here until he returns. Minutes tick by, hours passed and still no sign of Carl, it was too cold, no, it was freezing, but I didn’t go in, rather I rubbed my arms to keep myself warm, but slowly, dawn began to break and still no Carl. Warm tears rolled down my cold cheek, I was out here waiting for him for hours and he was with her, probably cuddling her on bed, keeping her warm all night while I stood here, freezing. I sniffled, wiping off my tears with my palm. It wasn’t working, this was my first time being in love, yet I was failing at it. I headed into the house and prepared to leave for school. My friend was right, I was still a little girl if I haven’t kissed anyone, perhaps I will take a chance with Neil, I won’t invest my feelings on him, but I will see how far it will go, and probably, Carl will see me glow and want me. I stepped out of the empty house, my gaze flickered to the parking lot, he still wasn’t back and it was past eight in the morning. With a bruised heart, I headed for school. “Hey,” Eve nudged at me when she slid down next to my seat. “Why the long face today?” She raised a brow, curiously. I flashed a tightlipped smile. “Nothing, I just woke up at the wrong side of bed.” I responded. She leaned in to get a closer look at my face. “It doesn’t look like you had any sleep at all.” I looked away from her. My head ached from staying up all night. “Let’s focus, Eve, the teacher is in class now.” I told her, taking out of my note and she exhaled softly and turned to concentrate in class. The day went by slower than I had imagined, classes dragged and I didn’t feel hungry during lunch break either. This was clear, Carl was getting married, and he was in love with Nora, she was the love of his life, and the lady he would probably spend the rest of his life with. I know I would be happy with the person I love and that person was Carl, but how do I stay happy when he is with someone else now. “Aren’t you going home?” Eve asked when the final bell went off. “I need to do some school work, I will go later.” I lied, flashing a forced smile and waving her off. “See you tomorrow.” I said, staring blankly at my note, the letter were blurry in my eyes. “Are you sure?” She asked. I nodded without looking up, if I did, she might see the tears in my eyes. She slowly placed her hand on my shoulder and squeezed it tenderly. “I hope I see the vibrant Riley tomorrow.” She said and left. I buried my head on my desk once she left, tears spilled from my eyes, now I wish I never left my family house to go stay with Carl, I feel embarrassed for begging him to stay when he still left, and perhaps I might find Nora when I go to his place today. I waited for hours before I finally head out of school, it was already getting dark. “Riley!” I heard my name, followed by a car horn. I turned to see Neil sitting in the back seat of car, his driver sat at the driver’s seat. He winds down the glass and was smiling in my direction. “Hop in, I will give you a ride home.” he told me and I walked over. I glanced around, and his car was the only one in the school premises. “What are you doing here?” I questioned. “Heard from Eve that you were studying late, I waited to drive you home safely.” He answered and slowly pushed the car door open. “Come on.” I hesitated, Neil was right for me, he looked right for me, intentional to the core, he even waited just to drive me home, should I chose him instead? I stepped into the car and gave my address to his driver and he headed in the direction of Carl’s house. The driver pulled over when we arrived and I stepped out with Neil. “Is this your place?” Neil asked, staring at the building. “No, my parent went on a trip so I stay with my dad’s friend for now.” I responded and he nodded, and slowly turned his gaze at me. “Alright, see you in school tomorrow.” He said and I nodded. I spotted Carl’s car at the parking lot. So he is finally home? I stepped close to Neil, half angry at Carl, half ready to finally have that kiss and perhaps glow when Carl sees me. “Riley, what…” Before Neil could finish his sentence, I leaned forward and kissed him, not on his cheek, on his lips. I slowly leaned back and he blinked, I didn’t move, I held his gaze and he swallowed hard, slowly, he tilted his head and I closed my eyes. His lips touched mine again and I parted my lips to accept his kiss, it was my first, I had imagined this moment to be with Carl, turns out it was with Neil. I will let myself get loved from now on. I kissed him again, slower and when I leaned back, he grabbed my hand and a smile spread through his lips. “So, are we formal now?” He slowly raised his brows. “Probably,” I answered softly. “See you in school tomorrow.” I said and he smiled at me and I walked inside, slowly shutting the door, and I turned to see the Carl. His brows furrowed at me, his sleeves rolled up and arms crossed over his chest. “You have a boyfriend now?” He asked coldly and I blinked. Have he seen us? Have he caught me kissing Neil?
