Chapter Three: Beneath the Surface

1211 Words
The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting the city in hues of gold and amber. Capri Morgan stood by the glass doors of her family’s penthouse balcony, clutching her phone tightly in her hand. Her thumb hovered over Zane’s name in her contact list. They hadn’t spoken since the rooftop gathering, and though she told herself it was better this way, she couldn’t ignore the gnawing emptiness she felt in his absence. With a deep breath, she tapped his name and pressed the call button. The phone rang twice before his smooth, familiar voice greeted her. “Capri. I was wondering if I’d ever hear from you again.” She smiled despite herself. “I’ve been… busy.” “Busy avoiding me, you mean?” Zane teased. Capri chuckled. “Maybe.” “Well, I’m glad you called,” he said, his tone softening. “What’s on your mind?” She hesitated, the words catching in her throat. “Do you want to meet up? Somewhere quiet?” “Name the place,” Zane replied without hesitation. --- An hour later, Capri found herself at a small, secluded park nestled in the heart of the city. It was one of her favorite hidden spots—a place where she could escape the noise and pressure of her life. Zane was already there, leaning casually against a tree with his hands in his pockets. He looked effortlessly handsome, his dark hair slightly tousled by the evening breeze. “You beat me here,” Capri said as she approached. “Couldn’t risk you changing your mind,” Zane replied with a grin. They walked side by side along the winding path, the soft crunch of gravel underfoot the only sound between them. Capri felt her nerves begin to ease, the tension melting away in Zane’s presence. “Why do you do it?” she asked suddenly, breaking the silence. “Do what?” “Push me to question everything,” Capri said, glancing at him. Zane stopped walking and turned to face her. “Because I see someone who’s meant for more than the life she’s been handed. And because I care.” His words hit her like a wave, stirring something deep within her. “You barely know me.” “Maybe,” Zane said, stepping closer. “But I know enough to see that you’re not happy. And I can’t just stand by and watch you fade into the background of your own life.” Capri’s breath hitched as his gaze locked onto hers. For a moment, the world seemed to stand still. “You make it sound so simple,” she whispered. “It can be,” Zane said. “But you have to want it.” Capri looked away, her thoughts a tangled mess. Could she really break free from the expectations that had defined her entire existence? “I don’t know if I’m brave enough,” she admitted. Zane reached out, gently tilting her chin so she was forced to meet his eyes. “You are, Capri. You just don’t know it yet.” --- Later that night, Capri returned to the penthouse to find her father waiting for her in the living room. His expression was stern, his arms crossed over his chest. “Where have you been?” Richard demanded. “Out,” Capri replied evenly, shrugging off her coat. “With that man again?” he pressed, his tone sharp. Capri’s heart sank. “What man?” “Don’t play dumb,” Richard snapped. “I have eyes everywhere, Capri. Zane Carter is not someone you should be associating with.” Her stomach twisted at the mention of Zane’s name. “And why is that? Because he’s not one of your carefully vetted puppets?” Richard’s jaw tightened. “Because he’s dangerous. He’s involved in things you can’t even begin to understand. Stay away from him.” Capri’s hands balled into fists at her sides. “You don’t get to control who I spend time with, Father.” “This isn’t about control,” Richard said coldly. “It’s about protecting you. Do as I say, Capri. That’s not a request.” Without another word, Capri turned on her heel and stormed out of the room, her emotions swirling in a chaotic storm. --- The next day, Capri sought answers. She wasn’t the type to take her father’s warnings at face value, and she needed to know the truth about Zane. Sitting in a dimly lit corner of the same café where she had first run into him, Capri scrolled through her phone, searching for anything that might shed light on his past. Her breath caught as she stumbled upon an article. “Zane Carter: The Enigma Behind the Curtain.” The article detailed his involvement in various high-stakes business deals, some of which bordered on the gray areas of the law. It painted a picture of a man who thrived in the shadows, unafraid to bend the rules to get what he wanted. Capri’s heart raced as she read on, her mind racing with conflicting thoughts. Could her father have been right? Was Zane really dangerous? Before she could process her emotions, her phone buzzed with a message from Zane. Zane: Meet me at the pier tonight. 8 PM. There’s something I need to show you. --- The pier was quiet when Capri arrived, the water lapping gently against the wooden planks. The air was cool, carrying the salty tang of the sea. Zane was waiting for her near the end of the pier, his silhouette illuminated by the faint glow of the moonlight. “I wasn’t sure if you’d come,” he said as she approached. “I wasn’t sure if I should,” Capri admitted. Zane studied her for a moment before gesturing to a small motorboat tied to the dock. “Come with me.” Capri hesitated, her father’s warning echoing in her mind. But something about Zane’s steady gaze reassured her. “What’s out there?” she asked. “Answers,” Zane said simply. Against her better judgment, Capri stepped into the boat, and Zane followed, untying the ropes before starting the engine. They glided across the water, the city lights fading into the distance. After what felt like an eternity, Zane slowed the boat, cutting the engine. They were surrounded by nothing but open water and the vast expanse of stars above. “Why are we here?” Capri asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “To show you the truth,” Zane replied, pulling a small, weathered notebook from his jacket. “What’s that?” “My life,” Zane said. “The parts no one else gets to see.” He handed her the notebook, and Capri hesitated before taking it. She flipped it open, her eyes scanning the pages filled with handwritten notes, sketches, and photos. “This is who I am,” Zane said quietly. “All of it.” Capri looked up at him, her heart pounding. “Why are you showing me this?” “Because I want you to know the real me,” Zane said. “And because I need you to decide if I’m worth the risk.”
