Chapter Four: The Price of Truth

1202 Words
The city never slept, but tonight, it seemed to hold its breath. Capri stood on the balcony of her penthouse, gazing out over the skyline, her mind racing. The events of the night replayed over and over in her head, the weight of Zane’s revelations pressing down on her chest. She should have felt relieved, should have felt like the answers she’d been seeking were finally within her grasp. But instead, all she felt was an overwhelming sense of uncertainty. What if she was making a mistake? She glanced at the phone on the table beside her, Zane’s message from earlier still flashing on the screen. He had left her with more than just a notebook full of secrets. He had left her with the realization that the world she had known—the world of luxury, expectations, and carefully curated appearances—was just a façade. Beneath it all, there were things she couldn’t ignore, things she wasn’t prepared for. As the night grew darker, Capri wrapped her arms around herself, trying to chase away the chill. She couldn’t help but think of her father’s warning. He had always told her that people like Zane didn’t belong in her world. That they weren’t trustworthy, that their pasts were too messy to be ignored. But how could she dismiss what she’d seen with her own eyes? How could she ignore the connection she felt with him? There was something about Zane that pulled at her, something that made her feel like maybe, just maybe, there was more to her life than the picture-perfect existence she had been forced into. The sound of the elevator dinging broke her from her thoughts. Capri turned, her heart leaping in her chest when she saw her mother, Malinda, stepping out from the hallway, her expression unreadable. “You’re up late,” Malinda remarked, glancing at the view Capri had been lost in. “Everything alright?” Capri hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. Her mother had always been the one person she could talk to, but lately, it felt like there was an invisible wall between them. Malinda had always been the supportive one, the one who understood the pressures of their lifestyle, but when it came to Zane, things were different. Her mother had never been one to keep secrets, and Capri knew that her mother would see through any attempt to hide the truth. “I’ve been thinking,” Capri finally said, her voice quiet. “About what?” Malinda asked, her tone softening as she stepped closer. Capri swallowed, trying to find the right words. “About Zane.” Malinda’s expression shifted, her eyes narrowing just slightly. “I see.” Capri turned to face her mother fully, her heart pounding. “I don’t know what to think, Mom. There’s so much I don’t understand, but I feel like I need to know. I can’t just ignore what he’s shown me.” Malinda crossed the room and leaned against the railing, her gaze never leaving Capri. “I’ve told you before, Capri, people like Zane are dangerous. You can’t just walk into their world without consequences. He’s not the person you think he is.” Capri’s frustration bubbled to the surface. “How do you know that? Have you ever given him a chance? Have you ever really tried to see him for who he is, not just who you want him to be?” Malinda’s expression faltered, and for the first time, Capri saw a c***k in her mother’s usually composed façade. But it was only for a moment, and then her mother’s protective instinct took over again. “Capri, you’re not seeing the bigger picture here. There are things you don’t know, things I can’t explain right now. But trust me when I say this: you’re playing with fire.” Capri’s anger flared. “I’m not a child anymore, Mom. I can make my own decisions.” Malinda’s face softened, her voice a little more gentle. “I know you can, but you don’t have all the facts. Zane’s world isn’t as glamorous as it seems. He’s involved in things that could hurt you.” Capri took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. “I can handle it. I’m not like you think I am.” Her mother’s eyes searched her face for a long moment before she nodded slowly. “I hope you know what you’re doing, Capri. But just remember—once you step into that world, you can’t unsee the things you learn. And some of those things are better left buried.” Capri opened her mouth to respond, but before she could, a loud knock on the door interrupted them. Both women turned toward it, and Capri’s heart skipped a beat. She knew that knock. It was familiar, almost too familiar. Without waiting for permission, the door swung open, and a tall figure stepped into the room. His presence filled the space, his eyes sharp and calculating. “Richard,” Malinda said, her tone clipped. Her father, Richard Morgan, stood in the doorway, his gaze fixed on Capri. “We need to talk.” Capri’s chest tightened at the sight of him. She had known this conversation was coming, but she hadn’t expected it to happen so soon. “I’m listening,” she said, her voice steady despite the rush of emotions that threatened to overwhelm her. Richard closed the door behind him and took a few steps toward her. “You’ve been spending time with someone I don’t approve of. Someone who’s been causing trouble in this city.” Capri’s heart sank. “What are you talking about?” “I’m talking about Zane,” her father said, his voice dark with anger. “I’ve warned you before, Capri. He’s not the type of person you want in your life. He’s dangerous, and if you don’t stop associating with him, there will be consequences.” Capri stood her ground, her heart pounding in her ears. “You don’t get to control who I spend time with, Dad. I’m not a little girl anymore. I have a right to make my own choices.” Her father’s eyes narrowed. “You think you can handle the consequences of those choices? You think you’re ready to face the repercussions of being involved with someone like him? I don’t think you fully understand what you’re getting yourself into.” “I understand enough,” Capri retorted, her voice rising. “Maybe you’re the one who doesn’t understand. You’ve been keeping me in a bubble my whole life, and it’s not real. Zane isn’t perfect, but he’s more real than anyone you’ve ever put in front of me.” Richard took a step forward, his presence imposing. “Don’t test me, Capri. You’re not the one in control here. I will do whatever it takes to protect this family, even if it means protecting you from yourself.” Capri met his gaze, unwavering. “You don’t control me anymore.” A tense silence stretched between them, the weight of their words hanging heavily in the air. Finally, Richard spoke, his voice low and dangerous. “We’ll see about that.”
