Chad was mad At his mother for going to report Ben. He later learnt everything from Jude. His mother had gone to Ben’s place during the holidays and told his parents that their son was a bad influence on her son and that he should be warned to stay away from Chad. She’s also said that Ben led Chad into a fight and ran away in the heat of it leaving Chad to face the music alone. Jude explained that Ben’s parents, obviously not wanting any trouble called their son and asked him to stay away from Chad.
Chad felt sorry for Ben. It wasn’t his fault that he acted the way he did. It was entirely his mother’s fault. Chad managed to survive through that week in school. But there was a part of it all that puzzled him. When he was in the clique , he was one of the school’s biggest boys. Everybody respected him and everybody wanted to be his friends. But now that he was problems with them and in only a few days, nobody wanted to be seen with him anymore. It was almost as if they regarded him as a plague . He had now learnt his first lesson in life: When you are at the top, you’ll have many friends. But when you go down, you’ll realize that you’re all alone. It was the whirlwind of life .
Soon came Saturday, the day he’d promised Ben he would visit. He knew what he’d failed to do during the holiday. He knew what to do now to make Ben forgive him. He packed the new Nintendo player his father had just bought for him from his last trip and headed for Ben’s place.
‘’ where are you off to young man, and what are you holding?’’ His mother asked as he attempted to walk past her in the living room.
‘’I’ll be right back,’’ he said.’’ Come back here,’’ his mother ordered And he stopped by the door.’’ I said where are you going to and what is that you’re holding?’’
‘’ it’s my game boy. It’s faulty. I just want to give it to the guy who fixes games in the next street and see if he can fix it,’’ he lied.
‘’Well hurry up and come back soon.’’ His mother said.
He left the house and hurried straight to Ben’s house. He was somewhat astonished when Ben’s mother welcomed him warmly. He’d been half expecting her to chase him back because of what his mother had said. But rather she welcomed him warmly then called for Ben. Chad did what he went there to do and fulfilled his promise. It was all over. Ben had forgiven him. Chad explained a few things about the game to him then left. When he got home later, his mother was asleep so he sneaked up to his room unnoticed. Liz had gone out with her their aunt and he had some chores to do so he set to them.
He was half disappointed when his mother asked him about the game later on. He’d hoped his mother wouldn’t remember it even when he knew his mother took everything about him seriously.
‘’He said it’ll take him some days to fix it,’’ he said, hoping his mother would forget in a few days.
‘’What exactly is wrong with it?’’she asked, still interested in knowing.
Chad shrugged. ‘’Something to do with the screen.’’
‘’Don’t tell me you broke the Nintendo your father just bought for you two weeks ago,Chad.’’ There! She had just given him a perfect word; ‘Broke.’ ‘’ I’m sorry mum. I didn’t know. It just slipped and fell. But I’m sure he’ll fix it .’’ Chad said.
‘’Well you better pray so. your dad will be so mad at you if it’s not in good shape when he returns.’’
‘’ I know . And I’m sorry,’’ he said.
‘’You had better be. Let me know the cost when it’s been fixed , okay.’’
‘’Okay, ‘’ he replied.’
Whew. Why had his mother suddenly taken an interest in his game? He hoped he’d be able to get out of this one uncaught.
