Soft evening light filtered through the curtains, casting golden streaks across the quiet apartment. Aylin lay curled on the couch, still dressed in her work clothes, her breathing slow and even as exhaustion claimed her.
The silence was broken by a sharp knock at the door.
Then another.
"Aylin!" a familiar voice called. "Open up! I know you’re in there!"
Aylin stirred, her brows knitting slightly. She blinked awake, disoriented for a moment, before pushing herself upright. The room was dim, the events of the day rushing back like a tidal wave.
She glanced at the clock. Evening.
Another knock echoed through the apartment.
"Aylin Everett, if you don’t open this door, I swear I’ll break it down!"
Aylin let out a faint, tired laugh. Only one person could sound so dramatic.
She shuffled to the door and opened it.
"Adele?"
Her best friend stood there, arms crossed, worry etched across her face. The moment she saw Aylin, relief washed over her features.
"Oh, thank goodness!" Adele exclaimed, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. "I’ve been calling you for hours! Why wasn’t your phone going through? Do you know how worried I was?!"
Aylin closed the door softly. "I turned it off"
Adele blinked. "You… what?"
Before Aylin could respond, Adele pulled her into a tight embrace. The sudden warmth caught her off guard, and for a moment, she simply stood there, letting herself be held.
"You scared me," Adele murmured with pouted lips. "Don’t ever do that again"
"I’m sorry," Aylin said gently. "I just needed some quiet"
Adele pulled back, studying her face. "What happened?"
Aylin hesitated, then exhaled slowly. "I quit my job"
Adele’s eyes widened. "You quit?"
"Yes" Aylin nodded. "I couldn’t stay there any longer. I filed reports, but nothing changed. If anything, it only got worse. Today was the last straw"
Realization dawned in Adele’s eyes, quickly replaced by fury.
"That disgusting man," she muttered. "I knew something wasn’t right. You did the right thing, Aylin. You should’ve left sooner"
Aylin offered a faint smile. "I know. And I finally did"
Adele’s expression softened. "I’m proud of you"
The words settled warmly in Aylin’s heart.
"Thank you," she whispered.
Adele glanced around the living room before plopping onto the couch. "Now, back to my original question. Why was your phone off?"
Aylin picked it up from the coffee table and pressed the power button. The screen lit up instantly with a flood of notifications.
Missed Calls: Jackson
Adele leaned closer, reading the screen. "Of course it’s him," she scoffed. "When is it not Jackson?"
Aylin let out a soft sigh. "He kept calling. I didn’t have the energy to talk"
Adele folded her arms. "Good. For once, you chose yourself"
Aylin looked at the screen again, then placed the phone back on the table. "I just couldn’t handle anything else today"
"And you shouldn’t have to," Adele replied firmly. "You’re not his emotional support hotline"
Despite everything, Aylin found herself smiling.
Adele noticed immediately. "There it is! Your first smile of the day. I was beginning to think that horrible office had stolen it forever"
Aylin chuckled softly. "Thank you for coming"
"Of course I came," Adele said, rolling her eyes dramatically.
"You stopped answering your phone. What did you expect me to do—stay at home and panic politely?"
Aylin laughed, the heaviness in her chest easing for the first time since morning.
The apartment felt warmer now, filled with comfort and familiarity.
"You know," Adele continued, leaning back against the couch, "everything happens for a reason. Maybe this is the push you needed"
Aylin tilted her head. "What do you mean?"
Adele’s lips curved into a knowing smile.
"My company is looking to hire someone," she said. "And you’d be perfect for the position"
Hope flickered in Aylin’s eyes.
"Really?"
"Really," Adele confirmed. "Send me your résumé. I’ll put in a good word"
Aylin’s smile widened—genuine this time.
"Thank you, Adele"
Adele grinned. "Don’t thank me yet. Thank me when you get the job"
Aylin leaned back into the couch, her heart lighter than it had been all day.
For the first time since she walked out of that office, the future didn’t seem uncertain.
It seemed promising.
And as laughter filled the room, Aylin allowed herself to believe that this ending might just be the beginning of something extraordinary.
