Five:
“And what have you found?” A tall African American chap entered a dimly lit room and Ashley, his contracted informant and computer wizard, was busy with the computer set on the bureau.
"Not yet, Whoever hacked your computer, is a real deal." She looked behind her shoulder and her boss drew closer to peer at the monitor screen.
"I thought that was your catch, little girl." He asked, adjusting his tie.
"Yeah, I need some time." She went back to the keyboard.
"Time? You see, time is what I don't have and if you can't be effective, I better make this contract non-exclusive, I hope you understand?" He said and placed his hand on the desk.
"Am not a rocky." She rolled her eyes at him. He grasped the arm of her rocky chair, leaning close enough to her face.
"Listen to me, little girl, whoever hacked our computer is one step ahead of ruining this organization and your simple job is to hack back the punk, It is the timing that should be handled quickly."
"Then I think my pay should be doubled." She spoke boldly at his face, he grinned at her before shifting away from her.
"Keep your eyes on that screen." He said and left the room.
"Keep your eyes on that screen." She mimicked his accent when he shut the door behind her.
Meanwhile, Ashley kept her gaze at the screen in front of her, pressing against the keys on the keyboard and directing the mouse around, high lighting and zooming in the program, that was already vexing her. In recent times, she had cracked codes and hacked programs, but this very job was extra tricky.
Ashley exhaled and minimized the program to at least calm her mind before she could get back to her task.
Something caught her attention, She peered at the screen, it displayed several passageways from the video camera that was connecting to her computer and a dude was walking along the corridor.
Well, that was an exclusive area, and she was not allowed to overview anyway she is a girl who breaks a few rules for the fun.
On the other hand, this dude on the screen was not allowed in there either, she recognized him as a non-staff, what exactly was he up to?
She zoomed a part of her screen, and it became bolder, the dude occasionally looking behind but kept moving forward, and then he entered a room.
"What are you up to, big boy?" She whispered.
Meanwhile, he just entered the boardroom, and none of the staff were present at the moment. He searched through the table and flipped through some documents before grabbing a copy out of it.
"Hmm, interesting.” She nodded, grinning, stealing from her annoying employer. That was what he was up to; he sure had a lot of nerves, and who was he stealing it for?
Maybe he was working with one of the numerous competitors of this organization, especially her digital opponent, whom she has yet to unravel.
A few minutes later, she took the elevator down the floor and met the chap already living in the building. She quickly hurried down to catch up with him, just outside the three-story building.
"Hey." She waved at him.
He stopped walking and turned around, and for a couple of seconds, he stared at her before managing a faint smile.
"You must be the tech wiz." He assumed.
"You got me." She grinned and offered a handshake. He reluctantly, though, shook her.
"What's the name?" He asked cheerfully.
"Ashley Frank." She said almost immediately.
"Ashley Frank, nice, Are you from around here?" He grinned at her.
"Who else are you working for?" Ashley popped the question, already bored with their formal conversation. Meanwhile, the chap stood stunned for a while, staring at her.
“Excuse me?” He finally broke through the silence, though looking astonished.
"I'm talking about smart-assing the entire security team and stealing a confidential document." She came straight this time.
"I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong guy here." He chuckled, pretending not to know what she meant exactly.
"Don't worry, no one else knows about this, at least at the moment." She beamed at him.
"f**k!" He exclaimed and kept his face down. How the hell did she even track him? He planned everything perfectly.
Some minutes later, they were both at tables in a restaurant. With dishes of mashed potatoes and two glasses of orange juice.
"So you are an insider?" Ashley asked after he summarized his recent operation at the company.
"Yeah, they came to me with an offer, one I can't turn down." He said.
"How much?" She sipped her glass of juice.
"Look Ashley, am I…"
"I said how much?" She interrupted him by repeating the question.
"A hundred thousand dollars! Okay! I don't earn as much as that in a year."
"Hmm, I think it's time to switch sides then." She placed her glass of juice back on the table.
"Are you for real?" He was puzzled. Is she serious about this right now? He had resolved to end up in jail for his deeds, and here she is speaking of switching sides.
"Or you just might end up in jail, next to a freak, and I flaunt in front of my annoying employer of a boss.” Ashley grinned. “And also get double pay or even more.”
"Oh, come on, we can talk this through." He pleaded, and then her phone rang.
"Excuse me," she said, and she put the caller on. “Hello Officer always looking out for you." Ashley chuckled and shook her head.
"Hello Ashley, how is the community treating you?" Mike's voice rang on the phone.
"Well, I can't complain. I am still paying my bills and staying out of jail." She chuckled at her screen.
"Well, about that, how would you like to earn two f*****g million dollars?" The caller said that, and she kept silent for a couple of seconds before replying.
"I think I am in."
