How could she have been so stupid as to allow the Earl to disarm her? Her wrist hurt from the way he had grasped it before he took away her pistol. She thought despairingly that she had been very silly in going near to him. Now she realised that she should have told him to put the Note of Hand down on the table or the bed and then back away while she picked it up and escaped. ‘Why did I not think of that?’ she asked herself despairingly. They continued down the stairs and she knew exactly where the Earl was taking her. She was sure of his intention as he put her in the dungeon and she knew that she would be unable to escape.
