Don’t go back

1220 Words
I stared at the message until the screen dimmed. Don’t go back. No name, no trace, no explanation. My first instinct was to call Cole. My second was to throw the phone across the room. I did neither. I walked to the window instead. The grounds below were quiet, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching the house. I searched the darkness until my eyes hurt. I found nothing. My phone lit up again, it was Cole calling. I answered. “Where are you?” His voice came immediately. “Sienna, thank God.” “You knew.” The silence between us both stretched for a while. “Knew what?” “About the men.” He exhaled. “Who told you?” “Adrian.” His breathing changed. That was more than enough answer for me. “What were they going to do to me?” “Sienna, listen to me. You need to come home.” “I asked you a question.” “They were looking for money.” “That’s not what I asked.” He couldn't utter a word. I gripped the phone harder. “What were they going to do to me?” Cole lowered his voice. “I was trying to protect you.” I laughed bitterly. “By selling me?” “I didn’t sell you.” “Then what do you call it?” “I made an arrangement.” “With my life!?” “You don’t understand what was happening.” “Then explain it, I want to know everything going on” “I can’t.” “Because you don’t want to?”“Because if I tell you, you’ll never forgive me.” My stomach turned. Before I could answer, he said, “Come home.” “No.” “Sienna.” “I’m staying here tonight.” “You can’t trust Adrian.” “Maybe.” “He isn’t doing this because he cares about you.” I looked toward the door. “Then why is he doing it?” Cole said nothing. That silence felt like an answer too. “Goodbye, Cole.” I ended the call. For several seconds, I stood there listening to my own breathing. Then someone knocked. I turned. The door opened slightly. Adrian stood outside. “Did you sleep?” I almost laughed. “No.” “I expected that.” He stepped inside but stopped several feet away. I held up my phone. “Someone told me not to go back.” His eyes sharpened. “Who?” “An unknown number.” “Show me.” I handed him the phone. He read the message. His expression became unreadable. “Do you know who sent it?” “No.” “Did you give anyone this number?” “No.” He returned the phone. “Then someone who has access to your information sent it.” “That doesn’t exactly make me feel safe.” “It shouldn’t.” I stared at him. “You really know how to comfort people.” “I’m not trying to comfort you.” “What are you trying to do?” “Keep you alive.” The bluntness of it made my skin prickle. I folded my arms. “Is that why you wanted me here?” “Yes.” “Only that?” His gaze stayed on mine. “No.” My pulse jumped. I hated that my body reacted before my mind could stop it. “Then what else?” He looked away first. “I want you.” The room went still. “You said that already.” “I know.” “Want me how?” His eyes returned to mine. “As a woman. I want you to be mine.” My breath caught. “You’re my husband’s boss.” “I know.” “I’m married.” “I also know that.” “You made a deal with him.” “I did.” “And you still want me?” “More than I should.” There was no smile. The look on Adrian's face screamed honesty. It was somehow more dangerous. I looked away. “I don’t understand you.” “You don’t have to.” “That’s convenient.” “Maybe.” He walked toward the door. “Get some sleep.” “Adrian.” He stopped. “If I stay for thirty days, what happens?” “Nothing you don’t agree to.” “And if I don’t want anything?” “Then nothing happens.” I studied him. “You’re really willing to pay two million dollars for that?” His expression hardened. “I’m not paying for you.” “Then what are you paying for?” “A chance to get you away from a man who was willing to trade you.” I couldn’t answer. He opened the door. Then I noticed the faint red mark around my wrist. His gaze followed mine. “Did he hurt you?” I pulled my sleeve down. “It’s nothing.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “It doesn’t look like nothing.” “I can handle it.” “I know.” He left. I expected the door to close. Instead, he paused in the hallway. “If you change your mind, tell me.” “About what?” “Anything.” Then he walked away. I shut the door. For the first time that night, I allowed myself to sit. My marriage was falling apart. My husband had stolen from his company. Dangerous men wanted his money. A stranger had my number. And Adrian Voss wanted me. I should have been terrified, Infact... I was. But beneath the fear was something I didn’t want to admit. I was damn curious. I opened the contract again. My eyes moved over the final page. There was one section I hadn’t noticed before. Contract termination. I read it carefully. Either party could end the arrangement with written notice. Except there was an exception. My eyes stopped. I read the sentence again. The agreement could not be terminated if Sienna Hart was considered to be in immediate danger. My stomach tightened. Why would Adrian include that? I grabbed my phone. Before I could call him, another message appeared. This time, there was a photograph. I opened it. My blood turned cold. It was a picture of me standing outside my own house earlier that evening. Taken from across the street. Underneath it were six words. “You should have stayed with Cole.” I dropped the phone. Someone wasn’t warning me anymore. Someone was watching me. My gaze went to the locked door. For several seconds, I couldn’t move. Then I heard something. A soft sound from outside my window— the sound of footstep. I backed away from the glass. Another step followed, someone was outside. I reached for the lamp and turned it off. The room disappeared into darkness. My phone remained on the floor, its screen glowing beside the bed. Then the handle of my balcony door moved twice. And I just realized Adrian hadn’t brought me somewhere safe. He had brought me somewhere someone already knew I would be. And they had found me already.
