Done Deal

I knew something was wrong when my husband stopped talking. Cole never stayed quiet when he was angry. He slammed doors, threw keys across the kitchen, complained about the food, the bills, the neighbors, the weather. Silence wasn’t his thing. Tonight, he was silent. I stood in the hallway outside his study, holding a basket of folded laundry against my chest. The door wasn’t completely closed. A thin line of light cut across the floor. I should have walked away. Instead, I heard my name. “Sienna.” My fingers tightened around the basket. Cole wasn’t alone. I heard a man’s voice coming from inside, low and calm. “Thirty days.” I knew that voice. Adrian Voss. My husband’s boss. The CEO of Voss International. I had met him twice in three years. Both times, he had barely looked at me. He was the kind of man people made room for without being asked. Even Cole changed around him, becoming quieter and more careful. So why was Adrian in our house at eleven at night? I stepped closer. Cole laughed nervously. “You can’t be serious.” “I’m serious.” Adrian's voice cut sharply. “What you’re asking for is impossible.” “No. It’s expensive. There’s a difference.” My stomach tightened. I lowered the basket slowly to the floor. “What about the debt?” Cole asked. There was a long silence— Then Adrian spoke. “I’ll clear every dollar.” I stopped breathing. Cole owed money. I knew that very much. For months, he had called it temporary. We had sold my car, emptied our savings, and nearly lost the house. But this sounded bigger. “And the company?” Cole asked. “I’ll make sure you keep your position.” “And my house?” “You keep it.” I pressed my palm against the wall. Why would Adrian give him everything? What could Cole possibly offer in return? Then Adrian said it— “I want Sienna.” The basket beside my feet tipped over. Clothes spilled across the floor. Inside the study, everything went quiet. My heart slammed against my ribs. Cole whispered something I couldn’t hear. Adrian answered clearly. “Thirty days. She stays with me for thirty days. Your debt disappears. Your position remains. The house stays in your name.” I couldn’t move. My husband had just put a price on me. And apparently, Adrian Voss had named it. The study door opened. Cole stood there, pale. For one terrible second, neither of us spoke. Then his eyes dropped to the clothes scattered around my feet. “You heard.” I looked past him. Adrian was standing near the window, in black suit, white shirt, no tie. He looked exactly like he did in every photograph I’d seen in business magazines— cold, controlled, untouchable. Except his eyes were on me. I had never felt so exposed. “What did you agree to?” My voice barely came out. Cole stepped toward me.“Sienna, listen.” “Answer me.” His jaw tightened. “You don’t understand.” I looked my husband in the eyes. “I understand perfectly.” “No, you don’t.” He reached for my arm, i pulled away. Adrian moved. It was only one step, but Cole immediately stopped. That frightened me more than anything else. Adrian looked at him. “Don’t touch her.” Cole swallowed. I stared at Adrian. “You can’t buy me.” His expression didn’t change. “I know.” “Then why are you here?” His eyes locked into mine.“Because your husband offered you.” The words hurt worse than I expected. I looked at Cole. He couldn't look me in the eyes. Three years of marriage. Three years of cooking his meals, cleaning his house, covering his mistakes, defending him to friends, and telling myself that every bad night would eventually become a better morning. And this was what I was worth to him? A payment. A solution. A price. I suddenly remembered Adrian's just said words— Thirty days. I laughed once, but there was nothing funny in it. “How much?” Cole looked ashamed. Adrian wasn't. Definitely he can't be. “Enough to erase everything he owes.” “And what happens after thirty days?” “You leave.” He didn't say more than that. No pressure, no threat, no promise. That was enough. I stared at him, waiting for the catch. “There has to be more.” “There is.” My pulse jumped. Adrian reached into his jacket and removed a thin black folder. He held it out. I didn’t take it. “What’s that?” “The agreement.” My hands felt cold. “Why me?” His eyes stayed on mine. “Because I want you.” The room seemed to shrink, the air suddenly felt heavy. Cole looked away. I looked at Adrian, there was no smile on his face, no embarrassment, no apology. Only certainty. And somehow, that scared me more than if he had tried to charm me. I took the folder. The first page had my name boldly written on it. Sienna Hart. My throat tightened. At the bottom of the page was a blank signature line. Adrian’s voice softened. “You don’t have to sign.” I looked at him. “Then why bring it?” “Because your husband made a decision about your life without asking you.” He stepped closer. “I’m giving the decision back to you.” I looked down at the contract. It stated thirty days. A debt erased. A house protected. A husband saved. My freedom intact. It sounded impossible. Which meant there had to be a price I hadn’t seen yet. I lifted my eyes. “What exactly do you expect from me?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. He glanced at Cole, then back at me. “Nothing you don’t choose to give.” My heart stumbled. For the first time that night, I saw something dangerous in his eyes. I saw desire. And I suddenly understood why my husband had been so afraid to say no. I closed the folder. “I need time.” Adrian nodded once. “You have until midnight.” I looked at the clock. 11:47. Thirteen minutes. Then he turned toward the door. Before leaving, he stopped beside me. “One more thing, Sienna.” I looked up. “If you sign, you won’t be coming back into to this house tonight.” My stomach dropped. “Where am I going?” His gaze settled on mine. “Home.” I stared at him. He walked out. And for the first time in three years, I had no idea whether I was being rescued or walking straight into something far worse.
