The Choice

The full moon rose two days later, bigger and brighter than Luna had ever seen it, hanging low in the sky like a silver coin pressed against the dark fabric of the night. Luna stood at the window of her room, her hands pressed to the glass, watching it climb. The fever was burning through her veins now, constant and unrelenting, a fire that no amount of cool cloths or herbal tea could quench. Her skin was flushed red, her hair matted with sweat, her eyes burning with a light that wasn’t entirely human. And inside her mind, the wolves had stopped circling. They were fighting. She could feel them clashing, teeth and claws, light and darkness, each one trying to gain control before the moon reached its peak. The white wolf lunged, its snow-white fur glowing like a beacon, snapping at the black wolf’s throat. The black wolf dodged, retaliating with a swipe of its massive paw, claws tearing through the white wolf’s fur. The impact shook Luna’s entire body, making her gasp, her hands slipping from the window to clutch her chest. She was the battleground. Her body was the prize. *Choose,* they whispered, their voices overlapping, one light as a feather, the other heavy as stone. *Choose now, before the moon peaks. Choose before we choose for you.* The door opened behind her. She didn’t turn. She knew who it was—Rowan, always the first to come to her when the fever got bad. “They’re here,” he said quietly, his voice rough with exhaustion. “All of them. Knox, Asher, Talon. They’re in the hall, waiting. They want to be with you when it happens.” “When what happens?” Luna’s voice was a rasp, her throat dry from the fever. “When you choose.” Rowan crossed the room, his hands gentle as he draped a blanket over her shaking shoulders. “The full moon is the moment of power, Luna. The wolves will be at their strongest then. That’s when you’ll have to pick one—or let them tear you apart.” Luna finally turned. Rowan’s face was pale, dark circles under his eyes, his hair messy from running his hands through it. But his eyes were calm, steady, the same warm brown that had always made her feel safe. “I don’t know how,” she admitted, her voice breaking. “I don’t know which one to pick. The white wolf wants me to surrender, to become nothing. The black wolf wants me to destroy everything. Neither is right. Neither is what I want.” “You don’t pick.” He took her hands, his calloused fingers warm against her burning skin. “You surrender. To one or the other. You let it take over, and you trust that whatever happens, it’s the right thing. The goddess made the choice for you, Luna. You just have to accept it.” “But what if it’s not?” Luna gripped his hands, desperate. “What if I choose wrong and everyone dies? What if I pick the white wolf and become a shell, and you all have to live with a monster that looks like me? What if I pick the black wolf and I kill you all?” “Then we die.” Rowan’s grip tightened, his eyes never leaving hers. “But we die with you. And that’s enough. We’ve lived our lives, Luna. We’ve had our time. You’re just starting. If our deaths save you, or save the pack, then it’s worth it.” Luna shook her head, tears leaking from her burning eyes. “It’s not enough. I don’t want you to die. Any of you. Knox, Asher, Talon—you’re all good men. You don’t deserve this.” “We know.” Rowan smiled, but it was sad, tinged with the weight of years of waiting. “But we’ve made our choice. We chose you, Luna. The moment we felt the bond, the moment we realized you were the Soul Pack female, we chose you. And we’re not going back on that now. We stand with you, no matter what.” She wanted to argue, to tell him he was being stupid, that they should run, that they should leave her to face this alone. But the words wouldn’t come. Because deep down, she knew they wouldn’t leave. The bond wouldn’t let them. It tied them to her, heart and soul, and there was no breaking it. “Bring them in,” she said finally, her voice small. “I want to see them. All of them. Before… before it happens.” --- A few minutes later, the small cabin was crowded, the air thick with the scent of wolf and sweat and fear. Knox stood by the door, his arms crossed over his chest, his golden eyes hard with determination. The weakness from the bond was still visible in the shadows under his eyes, in the slight tremble of his hands, but he held himself like he was ready to fight a army—or die trying. Asher was beside him, his usual bright smile dimmed but not extinguished. He leaned against the wall, his dark hair messy, his golden eyes soft as they met Luna’s. He offered her a small, shaky smile, and she felt the warmth of it through the bond, a small spark in the darkness. Talon lingered in the shadows near the balcony, as always, but his presence was heavier now—more real. His colorless eyes watched her with an intensity that made her skin prickle, his tall, lanky frame tense, like a bowstring pulled too tight. And Rowan stood at her side, his hand on her shoulder, steady and grounding, the only thing keeping her from floating away in the fever’s haze. “The moon will peak in an hour,” Knox said, his voice rough. “That’s when the wolves will be strongest. That’s when you’ll have to choose.” “I know.” Luna looked at each of them in turn—the battle-hardened Alpha who’d taught her to spar, the sunshine boy who’d made her laugh when she wanted to cry, the shadow man who’d waited a thousand years for her, the empath who felt every pain she did. They’d given her everything, sacrificed everything, and now they were standing here, ready to die with her. *They chose me. They all chose me.* And suddenly, she understood. The white wolf wanted her to surrender, to become a vessel, to erase herself for the sake of others. But that wasn’t love—that was martyrdom. That was giving up everything she was for people who deserved better than an empty shell. Knox deserved to remember their plans for the lake. Rowan deserved to remember the chamomile tea he’d brought her. Asher deserved to remember his terrible jokes. Talon deserved to remember what it was like to be human. The black wolf wanted her to fight, to hold on to herself, to choose her own survival even at the cost of everything else. But that wasn’t love either—that was selfishness, destruction, the kind of choice that left nothing but ashes. She couldn’t kill them. She couldn’t live with their blood on her hands. But there was a third option. Her mother hadn’t seen it. She’d chosen death because she thought it was the only way to break the cycle. But Luna saw something different. She saw the fifth bond, the outsider, the balance. She saw that she didn’t have to choose one wolf or the other. She could choose herself. *I don't have to choose one wolf or the other. I have to choose myself.* The wolves were part of her, but they weren’t all of her. She was Luna—the girl who’d grown up alone, the woman who’d been thrown into a world she didn’t understand, the Soul Pack female who had more power than she’d ever wanted. And she could choose to be *both*. “I need to complete the Soul Pack,” she said suddenly, her voice stronger than it had been in days. Knox frowned, stepping forward. “What? Luna, that’s dangerous. Adding another bond now, when the moon is so close—it could kill you. The energy surge would be too much.” “Talon said if all five bonds are in place, the burden is shared.” Luna met Talon’s eyes across the room. “The white wolf won’t consume me, because the other bonds will ground me. The black wolf won’t destroy everything, because the fifth bond will act as a tether. Right?” Talon stepped forward, emerging from the shadows. The air around him grew colder, making the hair on Luna’s arms stand up. “It’s a risk. A big one. But yes—five bonds distribute the power. It could work. It could save us all.” “That could kill you faster,” Asher warned, his voice tight. “The more bonds, the more the wolves feed on your energy. You’re already burning up with fever, Luna. Adding another bond now—it’s like throwing gasoline on a fire.” “Or it could save us.” Luna stood, her legs shaking, but her chin raised. “I’m not losing you. Any of you. I’m not choosing between being erased and destroying everything I love. There has to be another way. And this is it.” She looked at Talon. “Will you do it? Will you bond with me?” He stepped closer, his colorless eyes burning with a hope she’d never seen before. “You’re sure? Once the bond is in place, there’s no going back. You’ll be tied to me for life. Or until the curse ends.” “No.” Luna reached for him, her hands cold despite the fever. “I’m not sure. But I’m doing it anyway. I’m choosing us. All of us.” Talon reached for her, his cold fingers brushing her cheek. And then he kissed her—soft, gentle, nothing like the rough, cold shadow she’d expected. His lips were icy, but the kiss sent a jolt of power through her, a cold, sharp energy that cut through the fever’s haze. Through the kiss, she felt the bond snap into place. A fifth thread, silver and cold, weaving itself into her chest, joining the four warm threads of Knox, Rowan, Asher, and Talon. The pain was blinding. Luna gasped, her body arching as the bonds all flared at once—five connections, five Alphas, five pieces of her soul now bound to theirs. The wolves inside her screamed, both of them, fighting against the sudden surge of energy. The white wolf howled, a sound like breaking glass, as the new bond grounded it, pulled it back from the edge of consumption. The black wolf snarled, a sound like thunder, as the new bond tethered it, kept it from destroying everything. But Luna held on. She grabbed Talon’s shoulders, grounding herself in his cold solidity, and she *pushed*—not toward the white wolf or the black wolf, but toward the space between them. The part of her that was neither light nor darkness, but something in between. *Human. Woman. Luna.* The wolves hesitated, their growls fading. And in that hesitation, Luna found her chance. “I choose,” she whispered, her voice echoing with a power she didn’t know she had, “both.” The world exploded into light and shadow. Luna felt herself being torn apart—her skin burning, her bones melting, her soul unraveling. And then, slowly, painfully, she was put back together. Different than before. The white wolf’s light merged with the black wolf’s darkness, swirling together into a silver mist that filled her mind, her body, her soul. She was no longer just Luna. She was the Soul Pack. Light and dark, salvation and destruction, human and wolf, all merged into one. She opened her eyes. The fever was gone. The pain was gone. She felt… whole. The five bonds glowed in her chest, warm and steady, each one a tether to the men she loved. Knox stepped forward, his golden eyes wide. “Luna? Are you… are you okay?” She looked at him, and for the first time, she could see his wolf clearly through the bond—golden, bright, happy to see her. “I’m okay. I’m more than okay.” Asher grinned, his usual brightness returning. “You did it. You chose both.” Rowan smiled, tears in his eyes. “You found the third way.” Talon stood in the shadows, his colorless eyes soft. “You’re free, Luna. The curse doesn’t own you anymore.” Luna walked to the window, looking out at the full moon. The pack was gathered in the training yard below, hundreds of wolves looking up at her cabin, waiting. She raised her hand, and the silver mist swirled around her fingers, light and shadow dancing together. She was the Soul Pack. And she was going to survive. But as she looked down at her hands, she noticed something. The silver mist had a mind of its own. It was pulling her toward the woods, toward the ancient ruins where the curse had begun. It wanted something. It wanted power. Luna’s heart raced. She’d chosen both wolves, but she hadn’t tamed them. She’d only merged them. And now, this new power—this merged soul—had its own agenda. The mist pulled harder, and Luna felt herself being drawn toward the door, toward the woods, toward a destiny she hadn’t chosen. She was alive. But she wasn’t sure she was in control. And as the door creaked open, the five bonds humming in her chest, Luna realized: the choice wasn’t over. It had only just begun.
