The dinner table felt larger than usual.
Elena sat across from her sister, studying her carefully—every movement, every pause, every familiar gesture that felt both comforting and unsettling.
They looked the same.
Anyone walking in would think they were reflections.
But Elena knew better.
“You don’t remember everything,” Elise said calmly, lifting her glass. “But you remember enough.”
Elena didn’t flinch. “Enough to ask questions.”
Dominic watched silently from the side, his presence firm but unobtrusive. He didn’t interrupt. He didn’t control the conversation.
He let Elena lead.
Elise noticed.
“You’ve changed,” she said, eyes flicking briefly to Dominic before returning to Elena. “You used to hesitate.”
Elena smiled faintly. “I learned not to.”
A silence settled between them—heavy, but not hostile.
“Elena,” Elise continued, lowering her voice, “when you disappeared, it wasn’t an accident.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened slightly, but he stayed quiet.
Elena folded her hands on the table. “Then tell me what it was.”
Elise hesitated for the first time.
“Protection,” she finally said. “Or so we were told.”
“We?” Elena asked.
“Our family,” Elise replied. “There were things happening behind closed doors. Decisions made without us.”
Elena leaned back, absorbing the words.
“And you let me go,” she said evenly.
“I didn’t have a choice,” Elise said quietly. “Neither did you.”
The room felt warmer suddenly—thick with truths waiting to surface.
Later that night, Elena stood alone in the hallway outside Elise’s room. She hadn’t knocked yet when Dominic approached.
“You don’t trust her,” he said softly.
Elena shook her head. “I trust her intentions. I don’t trust the secrets.”
Dominic’s voice dropped. “Then don’t rush them.”
She turned to him. “I won’t. But whatever happened back then… it’s connected to why I’m here now.”
Dominic looked at her with quiet intensity.
“And whatever it is,” he said, “it won’t take you away from me.”
Elena met his gaze.
She believed him.
But as she turned away, Elise stood just inside the doorway, watching them both.
Her expression unreadable.
And for the first time that night…
Elena wondered who, exactly, had been protecting whom all those years ago.
