The hallway outside Dominic Castellanos’ office felt colder than usual, as if the entire building had sensed the tension he carried inside him. Elena Hayes stood there with the contract file pressed tightly against her chest, her heartbeat thundering louder than her footsteps.
She didn’t want to be here. She didn’t want this marriage. But life didn’t always care about what she wanted.
When she finally stepped into the office, Dominic didn’t raise his head. He sat behind his desk—powerful, composed, unreadable. The late morning sun spilled across his sharp profile, making him look like a sculpted statue carved from danger itself.
“You’re ten minutes late,” he said, voice low and controlled.
Elena inhaled slowly. “I had to read the documents your assistant gave me.”
His eyes finally lifted. Dark. Piercing. Too sharp for comfort.
“And?” he asked.
“And I’m not signing anything until I understand why I’m in the middle of a family deal I never agreed to.”
Dominic leaned back in his chair, studying her like she was a puzzle only he had the right to solve.
“You’re here,” he said calmly, “because you’re the only person my grandmother trusts. You saved her life. You earned her affection. And she wants you protected.”
“I didn’t ask for protection,” Elena replied.
“That doesn’t matter.” His voice dipped even lower. “You’re part of this now, whether you want it or not.”
Elena’s fingers tightened on the contract. “This isn’t protection. This is control.”
Dominic stood from his chair. He didn’t rush. He walked toward her slowly, each step filling the space between them with tension so thick she could feel it in her lungs.
When he reached her, he stopped just inches away.
“I control my world, Elena,” he murmured. “But I don’t want to control you.”
She looked up—too fast, too emotional. “Then why force a marriage?”
His jaw tightened.
“Because in my world, loyalty is rare. Trust is dangerous. People betray you for money, power, or fear.” He paused. “But you… you’re different. You’re the first person who ever looked at me without flinching. The first person who ever stood up to me.”
“I’m not a solution to your loneliness,” she said softly.
A shadow flickered in his eyes.
“No,” he whispered. “But you might be the only person who won’t stab me in the back.”
Elena’s chest tightened at the unexpected vulnerability in his voice.
Dominic turned away first, as if revealing that much had already cost him something.
“Sit,” he said, regaining his usual authority. “We’ll go through the contract together. Line by line.”
Elena hesitated, then sat across from him.
They spent the next hour reviewing everything—the terms, the conditions, the responsibilities. But as they spoke, Elena noticed something beneath his strict tone. A gentleness he never showed in public. A quiet care he tried to hide.
When they reached the last page, Dominic closed the folder gently.
“Elena.” His voice was softer now. “I’m not asking you to love me. I’m asking you to stand beside me.”
She looked at him—really looked. For a moment, his coldness seemed like armor, not cruelty.
“What happens if I say no?” she whispered.
Dominic’s eyes held hers, steady and unflinching.
“Then I let you walk away,” he said. “But you’d be walking into a world that won’t protect you the way I can.”
Her breath caught.
“And if I say yes?” she asked.
He leaned forward.
“Then you become the one woman I will defend with everything I am.”
Silence fell, heavy and electric.
Elena closed the folder slowly.
“I need time,” she said.
Dominic nodded once. “You have twenty-four hours.”
“Twenty-four?”
“It’s generous,” he replied with a faint smirk. “I usually give people ten minutes.”
Despite everything, a small, unwilling smile tugged at her lips.
Dominic saw it.
And something inside him shifted.
As Elena stood to leave, he spoke again.
“Elena.”
She paused at the door.
“Eat lunch,” he said, his voice unexpectedly gentle. “You skipped breakfast.”
Her eyes widened. “How did you—”
“You looked pale this morning.”
A warmth spread across her chest she didn’t want to feel.
She walked out quickly, escaping before he could see the confusion on her face.
Dominic watched the door close behind her, his expression unreadable.
This marriage wasn’t supposed to matter.
But somehow… she did.
